eight!
Night had fallen over Small Heath and Finn had snuck Penny and Jake into the Lee camp and Tilly had noticed Jake's hair from a mile away. "Finn!" Tilly hissed grabbing his arm and pulling him towards her. "Why are they here?"
"Because they are?" he replied and pulling his arm from her grasp.
"Well I can see that but why?"
"They wanted to see you, Jake's got something to tell you I think that's what he said," he shrugged and disappeared, Penny taking his place.
"Before you walk away," she began. "Hear him out!"
"Why? So he can tell me about his girlfriend when you knew full well I liked him?" Tilly asked.
"Tilly!"
"It's Matilda!" she shouted before making her way over to her brother. She was pulled towards a table with some of the younger Lee's by Finn who passed her a glass of beer.
"You good?" one of the Lee boys asked watching her face scrunch up in disgust before grabbing another one.
"I'm fine," she nodded.
Finn could see Jake keeping a watchful eye on Tilly since neither of them liked how close the Lee boy was getting to her. As she went to get another glass Arthur's hand gripped the glass before she could get her lips on it. "Oi!" she exclaimed.
"No more, Tilda. You're swaying already," Arthur chuckled at his light weight of a sister.
"But-"
"No more," he cut her off.
"Arthur!"
"I said no more now go sit with Tommy and sober up a bit," Arthur told her and Finn grabbed her hand, pulling them in Tommy's direction.
Tommy watched his sister sit opposite him with an amused smile, "Still a light weight then, Til."
"It seems so," she replied, resting her head on her hand while looking around watching the people dance and clap along with the band's beat and avoid Jake's gaze. Tilly watched Ada being spun by a Lee boy. Pol weaved through the dancers, lightly pressing her hand against Tilly's cheek in greeting before moving to speak to Tommy.
"You should tell Ada to slow down," The woman spoke, glancing at the man.
"You think she'll listen to me?"Tommy scoffed.
"I tried to stop her but she's been drinking. She's been stuck in that little basement for weeks. What do we expect? She's going off like a firecracker." The woman tutted, watching as Ada spun dangerously fast. "Oh, Christ, Tommy, please..."
"She's making feel ill just watching her," Tilly slurred.
The man sighed and stubbed out his cigarette, standing to his feet, cautiously approaching the dancing woman. Tilly didn't bother standing up to move or look towards the boy that had sat next to her.
"You can't ignore me forever, T," Jake sighed.
"I can and I will," she muttered, her hand moving to the glass that was in front of her. Jake pushed the glass to her hand. "Thanks," she whispered.
Tilly watched as her sister's waters broke and everyone made their way out of the campsite leaving her and Finn with the Lee's.
"Oh brilliant. We've been left," Finn sat beside Jake and now Penny.
"Oh well," Tilly muttered and made her way back over to the table with the younger Lee's to get a drink.
"Haven't you had enough?" the same Lee boy asked.
"Aren't you a bit nosey?"
Penny made her way over to the drunk girl who looked extremely uncomfortable by the closeness of the Lee boy. "Just because your family's are united now doesn't give you the right to get that close. You're making her uncomfortable," Penny pushed the boy backwards a bit.
Tilly stumbled to the cut with Jake following. "Why do you like this place so much?" he asked her when he sat beside her.
"It's quiet or at least it is when you're not here," she mumbled. "What do you want Jake?"
"I'm leaving, Til."
Tilly froze, her heart sank. She was slightly more sober than before, "What? What do you mean you're leaving? Leaving to go where?"
"Dad's moving us to America," he told her avoiding her eyes which were glassy.
"No," she shook her. "I know we're not on the best of terms right now but you can't just leave. What about us?"
"There is no "us", T," he muttered sadly.
"So what our friendship means nothing to you then?" Tilly asked, growing frustrated.
"It's meant nothing to you for the past month," he replied just as frustrated.
"It's meant everything to me!"
"Well, you've got a funny fucking way of showing it!"
Tilly sighed and lowered her voice, "I don't want to ruin our friendship by telling you how I really feel."
"What?"
"I love you and not like a friend, Jake," she closed her eyes to keep the tears at bay.
"Why now? Why tell me now? Why tell me a day before I have to leave?"
"Because I can't let you go without being honest with you," she told him, watching him stand up and shake his head.
"You've had the past month to tell me you love me but you didn't. Matilda, I can't do this not now," he told her before leaving the girl by the cut by herself. Tilly watching him go knowing she'd lost him, she wasn't sure which hurt more. The fact he called her by her full name or that fact that he didn't say it back.
Finn had found his sister picking blade of grass and throwing them, "What happened?"
"Jake's leaving and I told him that I love him," Tilly told him.
"And he didn't say it back?"
"And he didn't say it back," she confirmed with a nod before changing the subject. "Has Ada had her baby?"
"Yeah and the police took Freddie away."
"Come on," Tilly sighed. "Let's go home."
Tilly met her nephew and cradled her sister as she sobbed on her lap and she felt her heart break once more. Once Ada had cried herself to sleep, the girl slipped of the sofa and placed Karl in his basket before creeping up the stairs into her bedroom where she laid on her and allowed a single tear to fall onto her cheek. After the events of today that was all she allowed herself to cry just one single tear.
After all she was a Shelby and Shelby's were emotionless.
Elle speaks (sometimes):
Look I did say they were going to hurt but Tilly is now in her heartless era so who knows could be a win for everyone!
Don't worry guys Jake will come back!
