Chapter 1: Missing Rose

Time: October 9th 2004…9:36 AM
Place: Evergreen apartments

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! I slammed my hand around the nightstand till I finally just sat up and hit my digital alarm clock. Another morning. I sat up in my bed, head throbbing with pain. Like I could feel my heartbeat in my head. Last weekend a buddy and I got back from Santa Fe. We had to deal with a gang situation down there. They wanted evidence that the gang was having a drug ordeal. Sure enough, we caught them in the act.

I pulled off my white T-shirt and threw it on my messy bed along with my black sweatpants. I grabbed a white button up shirt and black jeans and put them on. Then I realized I didn't button my shirt correctly. So I had to unbutton my shirt and carefully rebutton it. I already could tell that it was going to be one of those days. After fixing my shirt and getting dressed, I walked to my bedroom door.

As soon as I left my room I heard the tv in the living room playing. Did I leave it on again? No, I didnt turn it on the other day. I was too tired. I carefully made my way down the small hallway and turned into the open space that was the living room, it was also the kitchen, the only thing separating them was the island counter. “Hahaha!” A laugh came from the couch. I turned my head and there he was. Ben Wilbur. In a black T-shirt and blue jeans.

Ben is my colleague in the work I do, and he is my buddy, but I dont tell him that. He was lying across the brown couch in front of the television. Lying on his side, his head propped up on his hand. I decided to speak up. “Really? You slept here again, Benny?” I made my way to the kitchen and filled a kettle with water then placed it on the stove. He seemed startled to hear my voice and propped himself up on both his elbows before speaking. “Nah, I just wanted to say good morning.” He gave me an innocent look.

He was terrible at lying as ever. My guess was he probably ran into an issue and came to stay here again, honestly, it's like he lives here now. Which I wouldn't mind. I think he has a spare key to my place anyways. I didn't want to bother with interrogating him so instead I just leaned against the counter and grabbed a bottle of painkillers off the top of the microwave and shook the bottle till two of them fell into my hand. “Everything alright Robbie?” Ben asked from the couch. I nodded in return. “Just a headache.”

He went back to watching the tv. I looked at him. “Are you seriously watching Tom and Jerry right now?” I glanced at him, last I checked that it was some dumb kids cartoon. “Hey! Tom and Jerry is great! So what if it's a cartoon?” I shook my head as the kettle screamed.

I poured the hot water into two mugs, one with a tea bag in it and one with coffee grounds in it. “Yeah and last I checked Ben, you're a Twenty-Eight year old man.” I let the tea steep in the water before stirring it. “Yeah well maybe I like cartoons because I'm younger than you.” He said in a matter of factly tone. I'm two years older than him. How he became a detective is a wonder to me. I put some honey, milk, and sugar in the tea and some coffee creamer in the coffee, then brought it over to Ben.

I handed him the tea. We sat on the couch together and watched Tom and Jerry. I leaned back against the couch and sighed and downed the painkillers with some coffee. “How are you feeling, Ben?” I glanced at him. He grinned and spoke in a cheery tone. “Doing good, Robbie. How about you? Well, other than the headache.” I shrugged. “Living I suppose.” Benny rolled his eyes at that statement. “You're so dull sometimes.” He took a sip of his tea. I chuckled.

We continued to watch Tom and Jerry until my phone rang. I pulled my flip phone out of my pocket and answered the call. “Hello?” I said with a groggy voice. It was too early for this. I downed the last of my coffee since I forgot to do so earlier. “Hello detective Silver, it's me Chief Blitz, sorry to call you so soon after your last mission but we have another case for you.” Great, just what I need. I really don't get a break around here. “Alright what is it?” Whatever, I need the money if I want to get out of this lousy apartment. I stared at the dripping water from the window seal. Great, it rained. Seems like it's been raining a lot recently. Maybe I should move the plants over there.

“Missing person by the name of Rose Woods. Her mother is down at the station in hysterics so if you could please get down here.” At this point Ben is looking at me as he drinks his tea. I hang up the phone and put down my empty mug. “Turn off the cartoons, Benny, we got another case.” I made my way to the door and grabbed my brown jacket off the rack. “Alright!” He jumped off the couch and grabbed his dark purple jacket off the rack. “Let's do this! Silver and Wilbur at it again! Best detectives in all of London!” He was always hyped to get another case. I simply shook my head as I chuckled at his eagerness.

Time: October 9th 2004… 10:53 AM
Place: London police department

I snuff out my cigarette and tossed it into a trash can as we entered the building. Police bustling around like bees trying to collect pollen during the spring. We made our way to my office and the first thing we were greeted with was a woman sitting in a chair in front of my desk. She seemed to be somewhere in her thirties or maybe early forties and had obviously been crying, her cheeks a rosey pink color and streaked with tears.

“Hello ma’am I'm detective Silver and this is my partner detective Wilbur. We heard about your daughter going missing and we are gonna help.” I took a seat at my desk while Ben sat on the burgundy colored couch to the left of my desk with a notepad and pen out. “So, what can you tell us about your daughter Mrs. Woods?” It was always the first question we would ask. “Well, her name is Rose, long brown hair, she's about five feet and five inches? O-or maybe five feet and nine inches? I-I don't know….” I could hear her voice cracking as she sounded like she was about to cry again. “She has brown eyes, a-and… and...” She began to break down and cry.

I slid the tissue box over to her and she wiped her face. “Ma’am can you tell us where she was last and what she was last wearing?” Ben asked as he wrote. Once she was finally calm again she answered. “She said she was going out with her friends, I can't remember what she was wearing. Oh! But she was wearing her bracelet she always wore. A string bracelet with a gold bird charm.” I nodded, maybe that could help. I spoke again, “Anything else you can tell us that will help us find your daughter any faster?” I leaned forward slightly.

She thought about it for a moment then said “People usually talked about how she was in with a bad crowd. I never understood though. Perhaps you could talk to her friends?” I figured we had enough information for now, we needed to leave her to think about all of this. I handed her a paper with my phone number. “If you think of anything that could help us find Rose please call me.” She nodded then got up and left. I looked at Ben and sighed. “So, where should we start?” He reread the information he wrote down “ Well she's popular at school and has friends so I suggest asking the kids at her highschool campus, Redbridge high.

Ask her friends while we are there.” I looked at him as if he were an alien with three heads and seven eyeballs as I grabbed my cigarette box and a lighter. Noticing my stare he jumps in with a reply “My ex teaches there!” Right, I forgot he had an ex-wife for a moment. He got divorced from his wife Suzan three years ago. We made our way outside and walked to where I had parked my car in the street.

“She's still mad at you?” I lit a cigarette. “Of course she is, can't say I blame her either. I mean, I wasted ten years of her life!” I cut him off. “Because you thought you liked girls and you thought she was the one.” He slid his hand through his night black hair as I spoke. “How about Lucas? How's he doing?” Lucas was Ben's son he had when he was eighteen, irresponsible but hey, I'm not gonna go down that path. “He turned ten last weekend.” We got into my 2004 Ford Focus and I put the car into drive.

“When we were at Santa Fe?” He nodded his head and coughed. I rolled down a window to let out the smoke. “I'm guessing Suzan wasn't too happy?” He sighed “God, she went on some rant about how she was blowing up my phone and such. I told Lucas I'd make it up to him after this job.” He leaned back in the seat. I nodded and started to dive off down the road of london.

“How did he react?” I kept my eyes on the road. Benny sighed and leaned his head against the window. “I think our father-son relationship is getting worse by the day.” He whined. He always did care for Lucas despite the fact that he was unplanned. “Unplanned or not, he is still my kid.” Is what he always says. He’s better than most dad’s I know who would have just dropped the kid fully.
