Chapter 3
First thing I need to do is figure out how I am going to move her body. Even though she is shorter than me she still weighs quite a bit. I'm not strong enough to carry her into the forest alone. I look around, hoping to find something that could help me and my gaze falls onto the horse still harnessed in to the carriage. I can use it to carry Elyse far into the woods but getting her up on the animal will be the problem.
The horse is calm as I approach it, it's big brown eyes are watching me. I hold my hand in front of its nose to show that I'm not going to hurt it. A couple sniffs and it shifts it's head to the side.
"Good horse." I say patting a hand on its solid neck. I undo the straps that were holding the horse in and grab the reins so I can lead it over to Elyse.
Now that I have the horse over here I stand next to Elyse and think on how to get her on the animal. I could use the reins and wrap them under her arms and pull her up that way. I hope I have enough strength to do it. Only one way to know.
With great care, I move Elyse away from the carriage. Wrapping the reins around her chest under her arms, so the rope doesn't slide. Then I toss the rope over the horse's back to pull from the other side. I let out a sharp breath holding onto the leather reins and struggle to walk back. The rope strains under the weight but it holds. I hope this doesn't hurt the horse, it seems to be okay at the moment.
I groan trying to pull on the rope and it begins to shift with ease, cresting over the horse's back. Just a little more, my hands are white from gripping onto the rope too tight and my arms burn under the stress. I can't stop now. Just a little further. The horse makes a noise and starts moving.
"No, no. Stop moving." I plead with a grunt.
Thankfully the horse stops. Beads of sweat are forming on my forehead now, a couple more steps and she'll be on properly.
Her body is perfectly draped across the horse's back with her face looking down. I drop to the ground tired after pushing myself too far. But I did it. Once I catch my breath again I stand up and walk over to the horse.
"Thank you." I smile at it and pet it's cheek.
The horse blinks at me bobbing its head up and down. I step over to its side where Elyse's upper body is. I don't think she'll fall over when we walk. Then I run my hand up over the horse's hair along it's neck and grab on the longer pieces.
"Follow me into the forest and please be careful about my friend."
The horse whinnies digging its hoof in the dirt and steps ahead of me. I walk alongside it keeping my hand on its soft fur.
With the carriage behind me and now that I'm deeper in the forest a wave of calm washes over me. The wind drifts through the tree tops and a smell of fresh leaves and flowing water hits my nose. It's even better than I would have imagined it could be out here. For years how I wanted to walk through the trees and now here I am. Free.
I stop walking when I come up to a clearing of trees. A small circle absent of plants about the size of two carriages wide. The perfect place for a grave of a loved one, for my friend. The horse and I walk right to centre of the circle and I look to Elyse. Now how am I going to get her off?
"Forgive me." I pat the horse's nose. "I have to get my friend off of you somehow. I hope I didn't hurt you earlier." Again the horse watches me and shakes it's head. What happens next surprises me though.
The horse lowers it's head down like it's bowing. Then it's rear eases down to the ground so the horse is laying on its stomach with its legs tucked underneath.
I gasp in disbelief and tears start forming in my eyes. Can this animal understand me? Or is it that well trained? I drop down to my knees and wrap my arms around its neck.
"Thank you, truly."
A thick layer of moss covers the forest floor in this area making it a good final resting place. With the horse's help I was able to slide Elyse off with no trouble and move her to the bed of moss. After removing the rope, I push her greying hair out of her face and wipe the blood off as best I can. Then I straighten out her legs so they are sitting together and place her hands on her chest facing down. I find some wild flowers to put around her body and also tuck a few under her hands.
I don't know any prayers but Elyse told me about the afterlife called the Golden Fields. I don't know if I believe her but for her soul I hope it reaches there where she can spend her eternal life with her husband and daughter...
I place my hand on top of hers and take in every detail of her face. She had become an important person in my life and I couldn't save her. If I was just a little quicker...
I wipe the tears away before they fall. Doesn't matter now, she is gone and now I must move on before it gets dark. Before I leave her, I kiss her on the forehead again. "I won't forget what you have done for me. Thank you Elyse. Thank you for your sacrifice."
I wipe more tears away as I stand up. The horse gets to its feet and steps over to me and I pat it's head. "I guess it's time we move on, friend."
The horse and I walk together through the forest towards the bridge. Once there, I can cross the river and finally head for the city. If I could I think I would live in the forest. The solitude is wonderful and so peaceful. Being surrounded by the tall trees and having the sun shining through, it's beautiful.
I run my fingers through the tall grass, the blades feel like silk against my skin as I walk through it. Birds are singing a happy tune in the trees above me. The afternoon sun shines between the leaves casting beams of light and shadows. It's beautiful here.
The sound of running water to my right catches my attention, I must be nearing the bridge or the river.
Letting the noise lead me, I come up to an edge where the ground ends and drops off down to the water. It's too steep for me or the horse to climb down maybe if I walk further I'll find a safer spot. I'm guessing to my left is where the bridge will be. As I look that way I see it before the river curves off to the side disappearing into trees.
Hearthgrim's people might be looking for us if we haven't shown up yet. Should I cross on the bridge or find a spot where the water doesn't run too deep and I can cross with the horse? Using the bridge I might risk getting caught by someone or more bandits but it might take me a while to find another spot to cross...
I climb up on the horse and lead it towards the bridge. We walk slowly along the river as I keep an eye on the edge. I don't know how far away Hearthgrim's people are from the bridge. They could be waiting on the other side or further up the road. I shouldn't be this close to the road though, if there are bandits and other people looking out for me now. Drakon and Hearthgrim are going to be furious when they find out that I am missing. I wish I could see the looks on their faces when they realize what happened...
The horse stops walking as I smile to myself and notice that the edge is closer to the water. I look upstream to the bridge, we are still quite a ways but I know I don't want to get any closer than this. It looks like we will be crossing here then.
I pat the horse on its neck and hop down to check how steep it is to get to the riverside.
"Not bad." I say and look to the horse.
It blinks at me then I take its reins and pull it with me down the ledge. My feet slide through the dirt and I step down to the bottom to big smooth rocks. The horse had some trouble walking through the rocks but managed fine. Now we cross the water, I hope it isn't too deep here...I get up on the horse's back again.
"Okay, here we go. Nice and easy." I tell to the horse. I hope the animal does understand and listens to me.
It takes a step forward dropping down in the water. Not too deep here... The next is the same but we sink down deeper to the point of where my feet are just above the water.
Another step in and we sink further, my skirt and feet are wet and this water is cold. The horse keeps going, moving us too slow across. Water runs and flows around us raising up to my thighs.
We are halfway through now and we start to float with the water. Oh no. It must be too deep for the horse now. I kick my heels into the sides of the horse. The water is up to my chest as we float and the creature starts swimming across. My hands grip tighter around the leather reins so I don't get swept away with the water.
We near the other side when I glance to the bridge and see people riding horses coming from the other side. They stop at the centre of the wooden bridge looking my way.
"Please hurry." I say to the animal.
One of the people call out to me and turn their horses back around coming toward us. Oh no! We are almost there. "Keep pushing!"
We touch the bottom and the horse moves quicker through the water. Oh please, oh please. I glance at the men coming for me, they're coming closer. They order me to stop. Move horse, move! My teeth clench as I watch the creature push us through to the ground. We make it to the other side and I yell. "Run! Go now!"
The horse moves climbing up the side and into the trees pushing faster leaving the men behind us.
Branches whip into my face and I duck low so I don't get hit, my hair flowing back. I kick at the horse for it to go faster because I can hear the people yelling. I twist my body to see how far they are. I see their shadowy figures only a few steps behind.
"Keep going. Please run as fast you can." I mumble to the horse. I don't know which way we are going, I don't try to steer the horse because I might run us into a tree or something. The creature huffs with each step pushing us farther apart from the people and deeper into the forest.
How long can we keep going like this. Soon one of us will tire and I feel my horse will be the first to. We are going to have to get them to stop or lose them somehow. I glance around trying to take anything in as we rush past the trees. The light seems to be dimmer in this part of the forest, the sun is setting.
Off to my right there's large boulders sitting in a line and between those rocks is a split with a fallen tree across it. I hope this horse can jump...I tug my right hand on the reins urging it to go towards the rocks.
With its head now pointed to the opening, I glance back to see where the men are. They've gotten closer but nothing to worry about yet. Maybe they haven't noticed where I'm leading them. Please let this work...
My heels dig in the horse making it push harder to run and I tighten my hands, ready for the jump. The fallen tree comes up fast and before we reach it I say a silent prayer that we make it.
Just a few steps away, the horse leans back slightly lifting its front legs up and with its back legs it lunges us up over the log. The jump is successful and I look down and see the ground sloping away from us.
"Ah!" I yelp as my heart plummets along with my body through the air.
Oh gods! As we drop I wrap my arms around the horse's neck bracing myself for the impact, we won't survive the landing. This is the end. It was a good effort for my brief taste of freedom. My eyes scrunch shut as I hold the horse and my hands start to tingle as we fall to our deaths but the air seems to move slower past us. One eye opens and I see that we have moved slower. Everything around us isn't rushing past in a blur. The ground comes up and the horse's feet touch on the grass with a soft thump.
I pull away looking around me, my chest is heaving. And up at the top where we jumped the men watch me with open mouths. What was that? Did I do that? Whatever happened, I don't question it because I am alive and those gaping men up there were going to hurt me. Unless they want to attempt that jump too, I am safe.
"We did it!" I yelp jumping off the horse and hug its neck again. When I let go I do a victory dance throwing my hands up in the air and I hear the men yell down at me.
I give the men a vulgar gesture that I saw Elyse do when Drakon's back was turned with my hand. Then I lead the horse away as they grunt in frustration. Victory. With my smile wide, I continue further on towards my freedom.
Dusk has fallen in the forest and I wonder where I should sleep for the night, if I should sleep at all... It has gotten quiet as we walk through, only our footsteps making a sound. Even the birds have stopped chirping. I keep glancing around me in the darker spots that are lower to the ground and swear that I see glowing eyes.
The horse seems uneasy as well, I can feel it tense every time a twig snaps. It's ears perk up listening to things that I can't here. I don't like this.. I start to run not liking being in the dark dense forest, I want to find a clearing to rest in.
The horse trots alongside me as I keep moving. It's harder to see now, there's only shadows and outlines of the trees that I can make out in this darkness. I wish I had a torch to light the way, maybe that would scare off whatever is in the bushes as well. My stomach grumbles so I stop to look through my bag. I grab the apple for myself and a couple carrots for the horse.
"I'm sorry, I wish I had more food for you." I say to the horse as it uses it's lips to grab the carrots. Their little hairs tickle my palm as it eats and I laugh then take a bite from my apple. I pat it's neck smiling.
A low growl sounds off to the side, too close for my comfort and the horse stands still. I turn my head to where the noise came from and see yellow eyes staring back. A second growl comes from my other side. Oh no..
What beasts lurk in these forests? I don't wait to see and turn on my heel in the opposite direction running through the dark with the horse. I'm still holding onto its hair but my foot catches on something and I trip falling to the ground into some mud.
"Wait! No!" I call out to the rear end of the horse as it disappears in the shadows. I gasp for air lifting my head out of the mud then wipe my face off. Great...
Panic builds when I hear the creatures' footsteps coming near. I can't possibly outrun them now without the horse...
I try to move into a sitting position but my arms and legs have sunken into the mud. The more I struggle the more I sink in as well. With a grunt I pull my right arm out then use it to dig the other out. As I twist and dig, it finally comes out with a loud squishing noise. Next are my legs...
Low growls rumble through the trees and when I look up I see more eyes this time. I shift my weight so I am laying on my side to have a better chance at fighting at least one of these creatures with my dagger.
I try using my free hand to reach for grass or a tree root to pull myself out but it's all flat around me. Curse that horse for running away on me, curse this world, curse this mud. Why did I do this. Maybe living with Hearthgrim wouldn't have been that bad, compared to what I am going through right now...
No, how could I think that. I'd rather be out here than have to live another day with that fowl man. Another growl makes me lift my head up. The creature is standing only a few steps from me. A large silver haired wolf.
I swallow hard looking into its eyes as it stares back at me with its teeth bared. What's it going to do? Maybe if I don't move it won't attack... I hold its stare and hear the others come out of the bushes. Is the silver haired one the leader? It turns its head to its sides and growls. They stop walking and lower their heads then the silver haired one looks back at me. It continues to walk up to me with its head lowered as well. I close my eyes waiting for what is going to come next. Its giant paw lands next to my foot and I hear a rip from the skirt and a drop of wetness lands at the top of my head. The wolf is sniffing me, its black nose touches my hair. Do I smell good enough to eat?
Next thing it does is lick my cheek up to my ear leaving a lot of water behind. This catches me by surprise and I open my eyes and watch it step around to behind me. What is it doing now? I look to the others and their heads are still down. The big one comes back in front of me and barks. Another bark then the rest of them bark with the silver wolf. Their barking rings in my ears so I cover them.
They continue to do this and I don't know why. I'm tired, its been a long day and I just want out of this pit!
"What do you want?!" I yell as loud as I can over their howls.
The silver haired one stops along with the others and they all lay down at the same time. What is going on here? As they lay there I try to pull myself out but the wolf crawls to me growling softly and stops when its head is between my arms. It's so close to me. I stop and look at it.
"Well what? I can't get out on my own." I say to it trying to get out but failing once again. I grunt slapping my hand down getting angry. "I am stuck here."
"If you aren't going to eat me then maybe you can help me." Why are they sitting here anyway, maybe they are waiting for me to die...
The wolf lifts its head up and reaches a paw out and drops it on top of my hand. Its huge paw covers my entire hand and I know one swipe to the head with that thing will be the end of me.
Our eyes meet and it lowers its head again and using the other paw it scratches at its head. Is that supposed to mean something? Does this animal understand me like the horse did? It seems far fetched but I think it does want to help... It would have attacked me by now if it wasn't.
I bite my lip as I look at the silver haired wolf then lift my hands up slowly at its neck. It watches me, not moving it's head as I grab on to the thick hair. The fur is wiry and coated in dirt but I don't care, as long as this works.
Once I have a good enough grip, the wolf lifts itshead then the rest of its body. My arms strain under the pull, my body is still stuck in the mud but that doesn't stop the wolf. It continues stepping backwards and gradually my legs slide out with each of it's steps. I can't believe this, it's actually working. Can't imagine the strength this creature has.
My stomach and legs scrape on the ground as the wolf fully pulls me out. I let go and sit up to see all eyes staring back, watching me. The lead wolf sits in front of me licking its large mouth. What do I do now? Will it let me go? I still need to find a place to sleep overnight...
"Um..." I scratch my forearm. "Thank you for helping me?" Then bow my head to it. Are all animals like this? Do they help people in need?
When I peak up at the creature its mouth is open and its tongue is hanging out but it stands up. Its height almost reaching mine and walks over to me. Its wet nose nudges me under the chin and licks my face again. Oh.. disgusting... I wipe the wetness as well as the mud from my skirt and watch as it walks away then it turns to me. Does it want me to follow it?
The silver haired wolf shakes its head and continues to walk past the other wolves. Then they follow it through the bushes. With the sun gone the cold and darkness creeps in, I shiver wrapping my arms around myself. The forest is eerie this time of night... If I am going to survive this, I have only one option.
I follow the last wolf through the bushes.
Only the silver haired wolf is visible with the moonlight bouncing off its hair in this darkness as I walk behind it to where ever it lives... Their path might lead me astray from Adelaide... I will worry about that in the morning, all I want right now is to sleep. I yawn and I wrap my arms around myself to keep warm, my body aches especially my arms... I hope tomorrow won't be so troublesome.
After what felt like a while the wolves stop at a clearing with a small river running through it. Silver light glitters on top of the water and on the other side of that, a large rock faced hill sits. At the bottom there is a hole cutting into the rock. A cave. This must be where they live.
All the wolves that were with me walk away in different directions. Some towards the water to drink and some towards the cave except Silv, that's what I named it. I watch the ones walking to the cave and see more wolves, not as large as the ones walking towards them. But they step out along with even smaller wolves. Pups and their mothers I realize upon looking closer.
A smile spreads across my face as the pups play with one another. Silv turns its head to me then walks away getting a drink of water. I stand alone for a moment longer to just watch the wolves interact with each other. They remind of how humans act towards each other... Another yawn, it must be late and I should head for the cave and get some rest before the sun rises.
As I walk toward to the mouth of the cave I get the feeling that some wolves are watching me so I turn around. Silv has come up behind me and is growling at the others. To my surprise, the ones that were looking at me lower their heads. They return to where they were sitting and he continues walking past me. I guess Silv is protecting his guest from the others. Should I rest here near the mouth or to where the others are going? This group is pretty large and they cover most of the ground as they lay down. Along the wall though where Silv lays, there is a spot by him.
I step over to him making sure I don't tread on others' tails. Never in my imagination would I have thought that I would be sleeping in a wolf's den.
Silv stares at me as I come up to him then lay down in front not bothering to sweep the dirt. I am still covered in mud after all...
The wolf huffs out loudly as he rests his head down and the others quiet down as well. A long day for all of us I guess. I curl up on my side holding the satchel close to me, listening to their faint breathing. A water drop drips from somewhere in the cave.
If I told Elyse what had happened she would not have believed me. If someone told me this story I wouldn't believe it either. What a strange world...
Although he is an animal I should say something to show it my gratitude. I lift my head up and see only a faint outline of Silv's body and darkness that I feel like it could swallow me up any moment.
"Um.. Thank you for sparing my life and letting me sleep here for the night." I say as low as I can, not wanting to disturb the others. Silv is silent and I leave it at that, he is an animal he can't respond...
When the morning sun rose I woke with the wolves. I think the same ones that were in the forest last night left again only in smaller groups. They must be the males that hunt for food for the rest of the pack. My stomach grumbles so I grab for another apple before leaving the now damp cave to wash myself off.
The little pups are playing as I walk up to the water and I kneel down to pet one, but a mother wolf growls at me. I look at her, pulling my hand away and tell her that I won't hurt them. Her white fangs show, warning that she will hurt me if something happened to her baby. A protective mother.
Her gaze holds mine and she backs off as soon as Silv sits down next to me. The pups resume playing and I pet the black one. It nips my hand, it's sharp little teeth digging in but there's no blood. My smile grows wider as they start to play with me and roll on top of my legs.
Silv lays down next to me with a grumble and I peek at him... He's right, I can't stay. I need to continue on.
"I can't stay here." I mutter as I watch the pups playing amongst themselves. "I have to get to Adelaide, it's what Elyse wants but I'm not sure how to get there now." Running away from those bandits has led me astray. Maybe I should start heading south now.
Silv turns its head to me with its golden eyes and stands up. Its cold wet nose pokes my cheek then it walks away from me.
I follow close behind as he leads me away from the pack, following along the stream. None of the other wolves notice us leave. Hopefully Silv leads me in the right direction.
Some time passes and my stomach begins to rumble again. I clutch at the fabric above it, trying to steady myself. I haven't had a meal since the day before yesterday. The food I packed into the satchel is gone and what Silv offered me didn't smell that great.
It grumbles again and I notice one of the wolf's ears twist back to the noise. He stops and turns its large head to me.
"I need to eat something..." I tell the wolf holding my stomach. What I need is food, a bath and new clothes too... I hope to the gods that the city isn't too far from us and I will be able to find shelter there.
It licks its lips and looks around us with its nose in the air. It's sniffing for nearby food.
As Silv walks away, I sit down because I feel lightheaded. Whatever that animal brings back I will have to eat it if I want to keep my strength.
A few moments later and Silv comes back with nothing. My shoulders slump forward. This isn't good. I stand up with a sigh and dust myself off even if I am covered in dirt.
"That's okay if you can't find anything. Maybe I'll find something to eat once I'm in the city."
Silv walks up to me and bites at the skirting on my dress and tugs on it gently. I step forward and he keeps pulling on my clothes while stepping backwards. He wants me to follow him, maybe he did find something, he just couldn't carry it.
Eventually, he lets go of me and leads me through the dense trees until they start to thin out. Now there are smaller, round plants that grow closer to the ground that are about my height. Are they different types of trees? Silv stops at a few of these plants that stand close to each other.
Am I to eat the leaves? I turn to him and frown but Silv shoves his nose at the plant then pokes me in the side. I lean forward and reach for the bright green leaf. When I lift it up, it reveals a group of blood red berries. Oh, these must be what I eat... Well here goes.
I pick the three small berries hanging under the leaf. Sweet watery juice explodes in my mouth when I bite down on them. They are delicious. I hum to myself in satisfaction and I begin to look for more of the tasty berries.
Silv nudges me again after I have eaten enough to fight the hunger and picked some extra berries for later. Now we walk alongside each other and I wonder if Silv is going to take me all the way to the city.
For how much we walked we must be far from his pack. The sky is already growing darker too. Hopefully the city is close, I don't want Silv to be too far from his family.
Early evening nears as I glance up to the sky. We will have to stop somewhere to rest, my feet ache from all this walking. A few more steps and I notice Silv has fallen behind. I turn my head and he is walking away off to my right to a large fallen tree.
Underneath the tree there is a small ditch just big enough for us. I guess this will have to do. Silv waits for me to crawl in first. After I am settled, he curls up beside me so he is facing the opening.
I eat a handful of berries before I fall asleep to keep my hunger at bay. They don't do much but at least my stomach isn't hurting like it did. Now I am craving those cold stews and stale bread. How I miss spending my meals with Elyse. Even if we did sit quietly while we ate it was still nice to have her company.
If I was still at the estate we would be together right now eating a cold meal after she had washed me. Hearthgrim would have visited me again tonight or maybe tomorrow. I don't know what day it is... two or three days have passed now.
After we ate, Elyse would walk back with me to my room and tell me stories then leave after an hour or so. Once she left I would sleep since I couldn't do much else. Sometimes she would help me into bed, tucking the covers tightly around me...
She can't do that anymore and I will never see her again. Never hear her stories or feel the warmth of her fingers in my hair. Never have that same kindness given to me.
Memories of her rush forward and tears begin to silently fall down my cheeks. Why did she have to die? Why do I have to venture this alone?
Something wakes me in the dead of night and I realize it's Silv howling. I get up and follow the noise past some trees. He is sitting at the top of a hill with a full moon set high above in the dark sky. The little white spots in the sky seem to be brighter than most nights. Come to think of it, I've never really took the time to gaze up at the night sky. It shines a pale light on the wolf making him glow. Is that possible?
I take care in stepping around fallen sticks so I don't disturb the animal keeping my eyes on him. This feels like a dream.
His ear twitches toward my direction when I am a few steps away and he lowers his head, turning to me. I stop in the tall grass, "Sorry. Didn't mean to interrupt." I say, wrapping my arms around me, the cold night air nips at my skin.
Silv blinks at me then bows his head. I walk up next to him as he turns back to the valley below. The land stretches far, a river cuts through the ground with the top of the water sparkling in the moonlight. Tall mountains stand in a row on the left and on the right I see distant lights flickering. So small that they might as well be the ones hanging in the sky. Is that my destination?
"Adelaide..." I whisper to myself and I hear Silv shifting beside me. Even when he is sitting and I am standing the wolf is still as tall as I am. His yellow eyes and white hair shine against the darkness that it hurts my eyes but I can't take them off him. For some reason it is like he is trying to tell me something.
The wolf's eyes sweep up to my forehead and he leans forward and presses his cold wet nose to my skin. My eyes close at the touch.
When I open my eyes again it is morning and I am back under the log. What a strange dream... I rub my head trying to remember but it's lost now. All that comes back is the moon and howling.
I crawl out from underneath the fallen tree and find Silv nowhere in sight. He could be hunting for his breakfast or maybe he left. No he wouldn't do that, would he? I look around me some more but there is no sign of the wolf except for some berries piled in a leaf thats sitting atop a rock. Without another thought I reach for the mix of berries and eat and decide to wait for the wolf.
Many hours pass by now that the sky grows dark and still no Silv. He has abandoned me, without even showing me where Adelaide is. I am lost in the forest. Curse that wolf for leaving me behind.
Now frustrated, I stand up and start walking through the trees with no direction until I come up to a top of a hill. In the distance I can see a city, the faint lights flickering against the dark hills. I was a lot closer than I thought. Hope blooms in my chest that I might be able to survive this, that I'll have a chance to start a new life. Thank you Silv, thank you for guiding me here. I can't believe I am finally here.
My next obstacle though, is the tall wall surrounding the large city. This better be the last thing I have to do before salvation. Glancing to the left and right, I see no gate or doors that would lead me to the other side. This is the north facing wall, so where do I enter? I can't risk finding a gate now, I have to get in. It would take too long to walk around and night is approaching. I don't know how much longer I can last like this. Starved and tired and dirty. The only thing I can do is climb.
As fast as my legs can carry me, I carefully walk down the steep hill. So close yet so far. I just have to keep moving even if my heart is pounding in my chest, even if my body aches and my head throbs. I have been through too much for things to end now, I have to make it into the city.
Whatever it takes.
