Chapter Fourteen
After taking the UA entrance exam, Petra cancels her entry into the other entrance exams now that she is sure of her place at UA. There is no point in her taking the other exams at this point. UA was her first choice, her real choice, and whilst the other colleges are all great, they are not UA.
In her bedroom, Petra's desk is now covered in fabric and metals and all sorts of supplies. She's kept this from her father, a personal project. She's not ready to tell him. Not until it is ready. Not until she is sure it is going to work. Petra sits at the desk with a pair of goggles over her eyes as she works on a circuit board clamped into place as she uses a small welding tool on it. This idea has been in her head since the entrance exam. She saw her downfalls, and she wanted to fix them with support items that will work with both her quirk and her suit which she has been working on as well. Most of her classmates will have filled in the suit allowance form and have a partner company actually create their suits. Petra wants to do it herself. To know that it works and looks right, to her specific specifications.
Shota sets a mug of coffee onto the desk next to Petra as his eyes drift over all the new equipment she has scattered around on the desk, and even still in some boxes. A small table next to the desk has been set up with a sewing machine and rolls of black, red, white, and blue fabric stacked up next to it, as well as strips of cut fabric littering the floor. She's been busy. He's only been out of the house since sunrise, and it is only just starting to set outside. He's only left her alone for less than a day and she's amassed so much new stuff. He steps away from the desk to look over the items. His hand settles on fabric that isn't just fabric. This has been worked on.
"What is this?" He asks as he picks up the fabric, letting it unfold to reveal that it is some kind of suit, in black and red with web details on the elbow. It's not a finished suit, he can tell that much. It is a crude start, but a start nonetheless. "A suit.......you really made this?" She gives him a look.
"You are the one that recommended that I apply for a support class" She reminds him. "And yet you are surprised that I can actually make support items" She motions to the suit in his hand.
"No, I'm not surprised" He assures her as he folds up the suit to place it back into the case. "I just assumed you would fill in the form...." He glances at the crumpled up allowance form that is on the floor next to her trash can. He can make out some notes, so she did start to fill it in. "Didn't know we had these sorts of supplies in the apartment" He adds and gives her a look, silently asking her where she got it from.
"I ordered them online" She mumbles and he gives her a scolding look. "Don't worry, I tapped into the trust fund that Pops set up for me" Aizawa gives her a second scolding look.
"That trust fund was set up for your future...for after college" Petra motions around her at her new equipment.
"This is my future" She counters. "I haven't gone crazy with the money" She assures him. "Just a few things that I needed to get started"
"Why didn't you ask me?" He asks her, placing his hand onto the suit's case.
"I didn't..." She lets out a breath. "I didn't want to put it on you. '' She knows that he makes decent money, but this equipment can be costly and they still have to eat and they still need to make rent. She didn't want him to worry about it when she knew that Peter had set up a trust fund for her when she was a kid, 'for the future', to help her if she ever needed it. Preparing for her career is her future. This was the logical option for her.
"I would have helped" He points out.
"I know you would have" She smiles at her. "You already do more than enough for me" She assures him. "Let Pops take this one" She touches his hand on the case and pats it softly. He lets out a breath. Sometimes he does forget that it isn't really just him. That Cindy's entire family is around to help. Just miles away most of the time. He turns his gaze to her equipment and what she is currently working on.
"What are these?" He asks as he motions to the desk and her work.
"Oh, urm, legs or pincers, I haven't decided on a name yet" She answers and he gives her a look. "Spiders do have eight legs," She reminds him. "And I thought that I could make use of four more....they'll come out the back of the suit when I need them" He raises an eyebrow. "For extra support" She adds and shrugs. He hums a little and then glances at the pile of papers close by.
"And these designs?" He asks as he touches the pages and pages and pages of sketches and notes that Petra has already come up with since the entrance exam.
"Other ideas" She answers and glances at them. "Not all of them are great" She mumbles and he shifts through them. There are suit designs, support item designs. There are two sketches with the most detail, ones she has worked on the most. The legs one, and one that appears to be web-wings.
"What about this one?" He asks, holding up the design.
"I like that one," She admits. "I know we live in the city and that will be where I assume I will be working, but not everywhere will have buildings that are tall enough for me to swing off, so..." She shrugs and motions to the sketch of the wed wings. "They'll allow me some travel, especially if I am working with someone with an air quirk or a heat one...." She explains and he hums in agreement. That would be a smart piece of support equipment. And shows she is already thinking about the pitfalls of her quirk and ways to counter it. Petra picks up the coffee to blow on the steam before taking a drink. Shota finds a different piece of sketch paper at the bottom. He slides the page out and looks over the designs. These, unlike the others, are not spider-like in design. In fact, there are notes about hydration and they are a lot older than the others, the paper is more worn and edited, over and over. He hums in question and holds up the sketch towards Petra. "Oh, that is just something I came up with for you" She brushes off as she turns back to her work, setting her mug down again. "I don't think any of it is actually viable though" She counters and drops a set of protective goggles over her eyes to go back to what she was doing. Shota hums a little and glances over the sketches. There are a number of different designs. From hydrating contacts to hydrating capsules within his goggles. Ways to keep his eyes from drying out when he uses his quirk. He touches her head as he passes behind her, a soft smile on his face. She's changed slightly in the last few days, since she took the exam. An excitement and softness to her. The stress of the whole college thing out of the way, all her exams are finished. She is finally finding something to enjoy.
