I Nearly Get Executed For Refusing Illegitimate Orders

Stored Martin's destroyed robe?

Check.

Sorted the Loot?

In Progress.

'What's that?'

'An ancient ayleid Mace of immense power, no touchies.'

'And this?'

'The Countess of Bruma's dragon bone and jade katana sheathe complete with katana that she keeps in a high security vault.'

'Why would she give it to you?' Martin asked.

'She didn't. I slipped past the guard, pickpocketed his key to the first vault chamber and lockpicked the master lock to the second chamber where I forced the magic doors open with my daggers and slithered my way through razor sharp spikes to steal the sword from the vault.'

'Ooooh and what's that?' He asked eagerly, pointing at a gilded silken black bag.

'A magical bag that expands as you put things in it from Kvatch.'

'Kvatch? But it burned to the ground!'

'It's amazing what a thief can find in the ruins of a city. I think you'll find that the Mages guild branch there was slightly more fire resistant.' I replied monotonously. 'It would be more interesting to clean your Quarters out and see what we can find.'

'Alright.'

I set down the golden sword I was testing and picked up the gilded black bag as Martin led the way to his quarters, a slight limp in his step and a gingerness in his left hand. I'd forgotten about his wounds from Kvatch, not that he had many. I figured there was a good chance that Uriel would skin me if I didn't sort things out soon. Seeing Martin's limp reminded me that I'd forgotten to use my healing cream on my recently acquired wounds today, and I really wasn't in the mood for dying of infection.

'Is something the matter?'

'Oh there are many things that are the matter, my lord. Though I sense there are things bothering you, care to tell me what it is when we arrive in your quarters?'

Martin fell for my trick immediately, and led the way to his quarters so we could clean them out of all of his Father's old trinkets. The priest immediately went to the small dressing table that was cluttered with fragrances that weren't his, picking up one of the bottles and turning it in his hand. It was quite suddenly that he spoke to me.

'You've been holding back lots of things, Hazelark. Not even Jauffre knows your past, and my father wouldn't tell me. I've seen... pieces of it in my sleep. You've been hinting that your past wasn't that great, but I've only seen good things. Please, explain.'

'If his Eminence wouldn't tell you, he clearly didn't want you to know.'

'But I have all the right to know! I'm the Emperor, aren't I? Don't I hold rank over you? Tell me!' Martin argued.

'As of yet, you are no such position to attempt exploiting the power you believe you hold over me. I may call you king, but you aren't my ruler.'

'I'll have you killed for disobeying orders.'

'Tsk, I'll need to teach you how to threaten people. You're far to softly spoken to be doing that. Besides, you shouldn't be biting the hand that feeds you.' I reasoned as I attacked the Lovely wardrobe that seemed to be locked with a bronze lock.

Martin hovered over my shoulder as I ran my thumb over the shining bronze in confusion. This looked far too familiar to have just coincidentally be there. Nevertheless, I pulled out my malachite lockpicks and struggled to ease the tumblers open. The wooden doors creaked open to reveal the exact reason the wardrobe was locked. Inside the wardrobe were expensive robes, dresses, cloaks, boots and gloves, several sets of armour and a few swords. The contents had belonged to Uriel, the dresses intended for Martin's mother who never got to visit Cloudruler to receive her gift.

'Why would my father keep dresses here?' Asked Martin.

'Your mother. His Eminence wanted to gift them to her.' I replied softly. 'You might ask Jauffre about her, maybe ask about your father too.'

Martin nodded thoughtfully.

'Hazelark.' He said quite suddenly. 'I'll do you a deal. You tell me about yourself and I'll tell you about me.'
