Test subject
(If you don't like cringing and possibly crying, don't read this. Seriously, don't say I didn't warn you.)
This won't hurt a bit." Doctor Jackston grinned, pressing a button.
I had wires hooked up to me, and they transmitted electrical currents.
As soon as his finger hit the button, I felt electricity course through me, feeling like I was being struck by lightning.
I screamed at the top of my lungs- pleading for them to stop.
But they never stopped.
They continued to do experiments on me, treating me like a science project that they had yet to perfect.
Those were the worst years of my life, trapped in a lab, being tested on...
"Please... Just... I've had enough... I.. It hurts..."
"Do you hear it? It thinks that we're going to stop!"
I woke up to the sound of screaming.
It hurt my head, and filled my senses, until all I could do was curl up in a ball on the metal examination table, covering up my ears to try and block it out.
Suddenly the screaming stopped, and it was eerily quiet.
"What's wrong? Why isn't the experiment working?!" I heard Doctor Jackston's voice, sounding like it was right outside the door.
"We're trying, sir..." Said woman, whose voice I didn't recognize. "But his systems aren't exactly cooperating with our tests... If we continue these rigorous experiments, it wouldn't be good for him."
Him?
Are they talking about Lukas?
Are they experimenting on Lukas?
"What about the girl?" Asked Doctor Jackston.
"Our ability to control her with voice authentication has failed, sir. We're working on it, but all we did was make her hearing 5% better than normal."
"Or for the love of... You're fired."
"Fired? But sir... Don't you think that firing me would be an unfortunate-"
"GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!"
I heard rapid footsteps, like somebody running away.
Then, I heard calmer footsteps, walking away from my door.
I sat up, looking at the room.
It was small and boxy, completely empty.
There was nothing in it, probably because they thought that I might kill myself.
It might be better than this.
The metal examination table glittered in the dark room, and the white walls sparkled.
The room smelled of antiseptic, it's scent burning my nose.
I looked down at my body.
I didn't have on my clothes- they had been replaced with a baby-blue hospital gown that opened up too much in the back.
I reach for my hair, and find that the had cut off more that 5 inches of my long black hair.
Now, it only came to just below my shoulders.
How long was I out?
I couldn't think anymore, because my thoughts were interrupted by screams.
This time, I tried hard to think about who it was.
I refused to believe that it was Lukas.
It was definitely a guy screaming, his voice sounding strained.
It continued on and on, for what seemed like forever-
Until it stopped again.
"PLEASE!" I heard somebody scream, their voice full of pain. "JUST... GIVE ME A... BREAK..."
Silence.
Then the screams started again.
They continued like this for the rest of the day, until the screams stopped, being replaced by the sounds of machines.
I know that feeling.
You wanted to scream, but your throat is strained from yelling at the top of your lungs- and making your throat feel like it was being torn apart.
I had my hands over my ears, tears streaming down my face.
The screams had buried their sounds in my head...
They wouldn't go away....
Just then, I heard a door open.
I didn't see a door before, so it must be hidden.
"Hello, Jesse." Purred Doctor Jackston, walking to my examination table.
"What have you done with Lukas?" I croaked, barely managing to sit up.
"Haven't you heard the screams? You must have... Your friend isn't having the best day..." Doctor Jackston smirked, his brown eyes ice cold.
They had been testing on Lukas...
Those were his screams...
He was being tortured...
"Shocking, isn't it?" Asked Doctor Jackston. "We needed more test subjects- and what better than a matching pair?"
"What have you been doing to him?!" I cried.
"Nothing, really..." Growled Doctor Jackston. "Only the tests we did to you in a matter of years- we're giving to him in a matter of days."
I thought about Lukas, how he must feel like he's dying-
How this is all my fault.
"YOU MONSTER!" I snarled, lunging for Doctor Jackston. "YOU'RE HURTING LUKAS! LEAVE HIM ALONE!"
"No, Jesse." Sighed Doctor Jackston, walking to the wall where the hidden door was. "We need him as a test subject."
The door opened, and I ran for it, reaching it just as it closed-
The wall blocking my way out.
I clawed at the door, punching it and throwing myself against it.
"LET HIM GO!" I spat. "HE DOESN'T DESERVE THIS!"
I continued this for what seemed like hours, when I slumped down against the door.
I started crying, huge sobs wracking my body.
Things were going okay...
And now this has happened.
I remembered how much pain I was in for the experiments, and I tried to imagine people in white lab coats, executing multiple tests on him at once...
I pushed that thought out of my head.
Lukas...
It was eerily quiet, until I heard a voice.
"Jesse." It was a man's voice that I didn't recognize, sounding like it was coming from a speaker. "I'm not supposed to do this, but I'm going to pull out a flatscreen. You'll be able to see Lukas... Just... Hurry up... Say what you want to say to him... If somebody finds out..."
A screen appeared out of a wall, with Lukas slumped down in the corner of a boxy white room.
He was crying, and he was wearing the same kind of gown I was, wires connected to him.
I stood up, staring at the screen.
"Lukas?" I asked.
Lukas paused, slowly lifting his head.
His eyes met the screen, scanning it.
"Jesse?" He croaked.
"Lukas... Are you okay?" I asked.
He stared at the screen, right at me.
"I'm okay.... I know why you always had nightmares...."
"Lukas, stay strong..." I cried. "You're strong- you can live through this..."
"Are you okay?" Asked Lukas.
"I'm fine... I have just been hearing you scream... And I... I've been so worried..."
Silence.
I stared at the screen across the room, memorizing this image.
A reminder that, no matter what they do to us-
No matter how it affects us-
They won't kill us.
Not when they went out of their way to get us.
"Somebody's coming." Said the man's voice. "I'll do this again, later... Good luck to both of you. You'll need it."
The screen disappeared into the wall again, and I was left alone.
Again.
Worried and scared.
