Chapt. 44 ~ Bonus Chapter
Days had passed and all was silent. Ciel and Sebastian returned to the mansion. Ciel had recovered well from the events, but still wondered about Mute. "And you are sure she is alright?" Ciel questioned for the 4th time while he was in his study.
"Yes, Young Master." Sebastian said as he stood in front of Ciel's desk.
"Tell me again what happened during the events that night..." Ciel frowned.
"Very well, Young Master." Sebastian sighed before continuing. "Mute had slaughtered both Claude Faustus and Hannah Annafellows while finally taking Jim Macken's soul, which had been her entire objective. Afterwards, she was gone. The gore she had left behind should give you an image of what she did to them. I don't think a demon can come back from a slaughtering like that. Not even I could be able to regenerate myself from the likes of what Mute did." Sebastian's face straightened while remembering the state Claude and Hannah's bodies were. As for the Trancy Estate, it was gone without of trace. "I did warn her that she will have the High Council of Hell will be after her."
"I didn't think Demons would take this sort of thing seriously. Was really what she did that much of a threat to the Demon Law?" Ciel looked up from his papers.
"Every demon must follow certain rules when they wish to take a human soul. Did you think we could roam freely while devouring every human soul that we see? There are terms and conditions before and after forming contracts. It is similar, yet different with Reapers if you consider their line of work."
"So what will happen to Mute?"
"I'm not sure. But she will realize this in due time."
~Miko's POV~
It's been over a week since we left the Trancy Estate. Mute has been sleeping like a baby ever since we returned home. For those who don't know who I am, I am Yae Miko, Chief Editor, and Lau is what I like to call either an acquaintance or somebody who wants my money.
I'm also a Japanese Fox, a Kitsune, and Mute's friend and guardian. Mute and I have been friends for years ever since our battle. I'm responsible to make sure she eats, is well rested, and looked after. Somebody has to or who knows what could happen to the poor girl. Like, having two demons come after her at once and try to force themselves onto her for an example.
All I know about her is that she is a creature out of this world, manifested from her humane desires. She is a lot stronger than she thinks she is, although she has trouble maintaining her power. That's why she sings. To match with her mindset so she won't spiral. Mute is a creature who can manipulate shadows and manifest songs into reality, and the other form she takes is a form not to be messed with.
When she takes her other demonic form, she becomes unstable with her power, attacking viciously against anyone or anything she sees as a threat. Her other form is different from the form she takes now. Hair the same length, her eyes become a different color, and tendrils spiral from her back instead of black wings. To make it blunt, Mute was a human who manifested themselves into a creature out of this world. She still has a human soul. Somewhere deep down and lost in the form she is in now.
"Somebody is finally awake." I don't need to turn around to know Mute is standing at the doorway. I hear her groan and yawn before I turn around to face her, seeing her rubbing one of her eyes. "You've been out for quite some time now. Have you fully recovered your power?"
"Mhm." She nods her head.
"Good. Then it would be best for you to eat something." I step to the side to reveal breakfast on the table for her. Mute walks over to the table and takes a seat before stuffing her mouth with French toast. "You should take the rest of the day off. I have no place to be today." I tell her, only for her to respond with another nod. "Do you remember anything that happened?"
Mute finishes eating and looks up at me with her cold, dead eyes. "Every bit of it." She says. "If I haven't said it before, thank you for being on the lookout during all of that."
"What are friends for?" I smile. "Tell me, how does it feel to consume a human soul for the first time? Slaughtering humans and taking their souls are two different things."
Mute closes her eyes again before answering, "Nothing like I had hoped for... I can still hear him in my sleep. He talks a lot, asking himself questions, and I reply with short answers so that he would stop overthinking... But he does miss his brother a lot. Luka."
"And you got all that from being asleep? I didn't think it would take time for you to adjust to a human soul living inside you." I raise a brow. I'm not sure how this is supposed to work.
"Time doesn't matter with my mind." She shook her head slowly. "In my case, it's about understanding the soul all together."
"You are extraordinary." I comment. "As I said, you can stay indoors for as much as you like. I have nowhere to attend for the next day or so."
"I think I am going to head back to bed. Thanks for the food, Miko."
"Of course." I smile again before Mute leaves the kitchen to return to her bedroom. And once again, she sleeps the whole day away. I haven't seen Mute this tired before during our days living together. But I had to be on guard. Every now and then we have uninvited guests...
Late at night there were small creaks coming from the roof. My tail and ears become visible while my eyes were glowing in the dark. Mute stirs in her sleep due to the noise. I quietly leave her bedroom and exit out of the house. Stepping out onto the patio I could detect 3 presences nearby. One on the roof. The other hiding somewhere in the yard, and the last one close by. Very close.
"Show them." 5 electrical foxes sprawl out from behind me and begin their search for the intruders. I keep my arms folded over my chest while my little helpers do their search. It doesn't take long for my right ear to twitch as I hear a faint grunt within the distance. I sprint around the house and pin the trespasser against a nearby tree. "I don't recall inviting visitors to our home." I snarl. "But you're not bad to look at, for a demon." I tighten my hand around their throat, earning another grunt from them.
"What the hell is a fox mingling with humans? Don't you belong at a shrine somewhere else far from here?" They joked. This one is spunkier than the others that have come here, and I can only guess they're here for one particular individual.
"What is a demon doing at a fox's residence? Answer quickly or I'll have to remove you from your existence, and I don't mind the 2nd option." I use my other hand to impale his chest and grab his heart, but not crushing it to dust yet. "What are you here for? Do not have me ask again."
The demon grunts again when I begin to squeeze his heart. Although these creatures don't require such organs, but let's see what I can do with a demon's heart once I mutilate his body piece by piece. "Why...are you protecting it?" They manage to say.
"Because I can." I know they were referring to Mute.
"That THING has tampered with the law. The High Council has sent us to kill her. Consequences for the actions she's caused."
"For slaughtering two culprits who were tampering with the laws themselves. She did the High Council a favor if they weren't going to do anything about it. Were they going to sit there while lives were being taken? Or were they going to sit and enjoy the show until they felt like intervening?" I squeeze the heart a little tighter, earning another grunt from the male demon.
"Rules are rules! Now she pays the price!"
"Then allow me to object." In one quick motion, I slash the demon's throat with my clawed nails. He gurgles and chokes on his own blood before dropping to his knees while keeping his hand on his throat to stop the bleeding. 'Who knew the demon sword's poison would come in handy?' I smirk while staring at the blood on my nails.
After leaving the Trancy Estate I decided to take the demon sword with me. I examined the thing before breaking it down to tiny pieces and mixing it into a few of my nail polishers. Surprisingly the effects of the sword are still in contact. This leaves me at an advantage!
"1 down, 2 to go."
Another demon was lurking in the yard somewhere. Not as hard to find when hiding in a tree. Appearing behind him, I grab ahold of his head and snap his neck, all while digging my claws into his throat. 1 more to go. Now where is the last one? My eyes glow in alert, sensing his presence from inside the house.
'Mute!' I thought in a panic. Appearing inside her room I saw the demon standing over her bed. His eyes glowing red in the dark and his clawed hands raised in the air, ready to strike her while she peacefully snoozed. "NO!" I scream. My felt my own eyes glowing brighter before a bolt of lightning struck the demon down. I tackle him against the wall with my hand thrusted into his chest. The demon coughs up his own blood before his body went limp.
Mute turns over to her side and I sigh in relief, thankful she didn't wake up. And that makes 3. And I know from here on out there will be more of them to come. But I'm not going to let that happen. I'm not going to let any vermin trifle with Mute again. Not while I'm here. Because,
"I'm always watching." I turn around and glare up at the ceiling, as if I was expecting something or someone to be there, with my eyes still glowing.
