18 The Silenced Memory
Hiccup frowned when Toothless suddenly stopped and flew on the same spot for some time. It kept looking around. Jack had brought his bewilderbeast, Snow, next to Hiccup's dragon. The size difference couldn't be unnoticed.
"Shouldn't we go to Corona?" Jack asked "That's where Elsa went."
Hiccup shook his head. "No, Toothless seems to think that we should go to Arendelle," Hiccup exclaimed as the dragon started to change direction.
"So Corona.... we were too late?" Jack gulped and a single breeze coming from Corona's direction was enough to tell him how things were.
The coldness radiating from Corona, it meant that it was cold and lost. Jack gritted his teeth together, feeling angry at himself for letting this happen.
"We were too late," Jack whispered.
Hiccup turned his dragon around, Toothless squeaked and made Snow, Jack's dragon, to follow after him. They were now heading back to Arendelle.
"Don't you dare lose hope! We just need to defeat the Ice Queen and I'm sure the ice will melt," Hiccup sounded so certain which made Jack slightly surprised.
"I guess you're right," Jack sighed though he still felt depressed.
"If you can't convince her to be 'nice' again – then we need to murder her. I hope you realize that," Hiccup yelled over the sound of wind.
"I do," Jack shouted back.
They could hear the roaring sound when the magical barrier was being taken down. It sounded like the struck of thunder or when you hit a thin metal plate with a hammer. It vibrated, the sound was almost painful to ears.
"So the thing is finally coming down but the people in there... they don't remember magic. Jack, there's going to be even less people believing in you," Hiccup worried while he looked over the ocean.
They saw the other side flickering in the horizon on their left. Jack knew that world, soon the locations from there would mix up with the magical side. The memories, they couldn't return though – not until Toothiana comes back to return them. She had been working with the stone trolls to create the barrier and the memory loss magic.
"Yeah, that's a problem. I probably can't match with Elsa's powers. I'm too weak plus my body is more humans than magical beings," Jack mumbled.
"Are you saying that you could die?" Hiccup exhaled.
"Yup. I fell from the castle and my body is still healing. Usually things like that wouldn't affect me," Jack replied blankly.
Then he looked down, he saw the ocean under them shifting to frozen ground. Soon they would fly over the mountains that lead to Arendelle.
"Odd... Merida is no longer down there," Hiccup yelled.
"She must have gone back to her kingdom but we need to hurry!" Jack yelled back. He could sense her in the castle now.
"Okay - show us what you got buddy!" Hiccup spoke to Toothless who huffed before flying a speed like flash.
Jack flew after them and they saw the castle getting closer and closer. He decided to make things right.
In the same time Elsa was circling around the intruders who had used a portal against her. She glared at Merida, Anna and Kristoff. Anna tried to beg her sister to come to her senses over and over again for nothing.
"There's no reason for me to think that you actually care, oh my dear sister. Our parents always liked you more, the cheery bubbly Anna and then me – the cold, dangerous and the witch Queen from the prophecy, oh they were afraid of me," Elsa laughed much to Anna's despair.
Anna sighed, "Can't you see! I came for you again. Remember? When you froze our neighborhood and I fought my way to you. We outdid Hans together!" Anna begged.
Anna approached Elsa but she was pulled back by Kristoff before Elsa's ice powers hit her. Anna watched in shock as the wall behind her got a thicker layer of ice.
"That's it! Can't we just kill her!" Merida yelled and took out her bow.
Anna ran between Merida and Elsa, she held her arms spread.
"No! We can figure things out! She is not a monster!" Anna spoke to Merida.
Kristoff sighed and glanced at Elsa. Her appearance was so different, her black spiky hair was looking deadly sharp and her grin was murderous. She was far from the woman who he and Anna had tried to save when she first time lost control.
"But she is a monster," one of the Witch Queens – Maleficent – came out from the shadows.
"Yes!" Elsa yelled and let out a blast of her powers at the trio who had come to help her.
Kristoff grabbed Anna to his embrace as the cold wave rushed towards them. He whispered her how he loved her and both of them closed their eyes.
A sudden wave of warmth came in. Toothless was floating outside the castle and landed on the balcony. It had stopped the cold wave from hitting them with its blast ball. Hiccup ran to Merida and hugged her, he was so sure that he would lose her like he lost Astrid. Merida pushed him away and gave him a glare but there was a trace of happy shimmer flickering in the corner of her eyes.
Anna saw how Jack ran inside, holding his staff. He had ordered his dragon to wait in the mountains as he wanted to fix things by himself. Jack glanced at Anna who was approaching him furiously.
"And now you come back! Corona is gone and Elsa, she doesn't listen to me," Anna cried and hit Jack to his chest.
Elsa laughed and looked at the two. She felt pure hate towards the Guardian of Fun who so well deceived her.
"Anna, take some distance. You should let Hiccup transport you away- her powers they-," Jack explained and saw a burst of ice coming towards them.
He waved his staff and stopped Elsa's power just in the nick of time. However he had just used the last bit of his magic. The frost vanished from his clothes and he felt alone when the wind wasn't talking to him anymore.
"Jack - Pabbi said that you and Elsa need to touch this. The stone trolls told that!" Anna whispered and opened up Jack's free hand where she placed a heart shaped tiny pebble.
Jack frowned but nodded to Anna. He gave her to Kristoff and he watched how they took some distance. Toothless was radiating warmth for Merida and Hiccup, there Anna and Kristoff went as well, holding each other.
Now Jack Frost took a raspy inhale, he should try to talk with Elsa. He should convince her to stop. After a quick glance to the pebble he realized something, the heart shape reminded him that inside that cold appearance which she had built was still the caring girl who had helped him when he had lost his own identity. He should help her now.
"Let me help you," Jack spoke and approached Elsa. He reached his hand towards her where he had the stone that Anna had given.
"Hah," Elsa hummed and waved her hand.
"I guess we can let her handle this," Maleficent grinned and scratched her crow from beneath its peak. She had seen how a huge snowman appeared, roaring angrily. She vanished to shadows with her crow and now it was just Elsa and the people who were trying to help her.
"Kill them!" Elsa cheered and pointed towards the people near Toothless.
"Elsa no!" Anna shrieked. She had seen that snowman, marshmallow, before. Kristoff hugged Anna tightly when the huge snowman approached them.
"STOP! Elsa this is insane!" Jack yelled and ran in front of marshmallow. He tried to use his snow magic but nothing happened.
"Toothless, a plasma ball," Hiccup hissed and Toothless prepared for attack.
Marshmallow growled at Jack and swiped him off from his way like he was a fly. The force made Jack hit a wall and his staff dropped in front of Marshmallow. Jack opened his eyes slowly, his whole body ached. Then he felt like someone had cracked his heart in half.
Jack glanced at Marshmallow, his eyes widened as he saw his staff in two pieces. The giant had snapped it in half, Jack was now panting – it really hurt since it felt like a part of him was destroyed. The snowman dropped the parts of the staff to ground and approached his targets again but then Toothless shot a hot plasma ball at it, making it melt away in an instant.
"Hmh...how unpleasant," Elsa hummed and crossed her arms in disappointment.
Elsa didn't notice the Guardian who had gotten up and was approaching her slowly. He felt shocked to see her like this, wishing to murder someone.
"Elsa...why are you like this?" Jack exhaled and stood next to her, clutching his chest as it kept hurting.
"You betrayed me, fooled me to come here. And you keep telling me how I am too young for you. Everywhere disappointments so... I thought that I could take things to my own hands! No more being afraid or unhappy!" Elsa laughed crazily.
Jack gulped, "W-we can try again?"
Elsa huffed, "You're just trying to hurt me again. I thought you were cute but now I can see that you're a jerk."
Jack blinked, he glanced at facepalming Hiccup. She had feelings for him, Jack, so maybe he could try that.
"I think that I fell for you too," Jack exclaimed and gave a smile.
"Y-you do?" Elsa gulped and her arms dropped down as until now she had them crossed over her chest.
"I was afraid since I am much older than you – haha... Guardian of Fun afraid, how stupid is that?" Jack asked sadly and stood straight in front of her. "And I am immortal, doesn't that freak you out?" He asked gently.
For some reason he started to feel warm in the inside but nervous. His arm went behind her back and the heart shaped pebble almost touched her skin as he held it in his hand.
"No, I never thought of such things," Elsa whispered shyly.
Jack smiled and tilted his head, closing his eyes. His heartbeat fastened as he closed up the tiny space between them. He was aiming for a kiss, perhaps he should just give in and let the fate decide what will happen between them?
He felt her warm breathe dancing on his lips and he felt curious. Would her lips be soft and warm? Tight and cold? Wet and overwhelming?
Then he coughed, a sudden pain seemed to pierce his body as blood drops flew out from his mouth. His eyes flashed open and he stared at Elsa who slipped away from his grip. He was stuck and felt being in pain, he glanced down. His blood was running down on ice spikes, three of them had risen from ground and pierced his chest and abdomen area.
Elsa looked at Jack, smirking to his suffering. She saw tears running down on his cheeks while he watched her. A devious laughter came from deep inside of her.
Anna screamed when she saw what Elsa had done. Everyone stared at the scene, Jack's feet weren't touching the ground since the spikes had lifted him up from the ground as they thrust through him.
Jack was panting and losing his strength. His hands touched the spikes which were still inside him, merely avoiding his heart.
Then he smiled sadly, "I am not mad. Y-You are not evil... don't...don't blame yourself f-for this."
Jack's body began to fade away and Elsa stared at him in shock. He should be shouting in rage but still he is trying to comfort her. Why. Why is he like this?
"My time as Jack Frost has come to an end," Jack gulped and was breathing heavily.
Elsa frowned, "Idiot. The world always needs winter."
Elsa thought that he was laying again and she knew it. Sassily she crossed her arms and glared at him and suddenly he chuckled, which caused him to cough out more blood which he wiped away from his mouth. His body was turning transparent and Elsa felt a sting in her heart.
"The physical body is vanishing, the guy who drowned is getting his peace. Only Nightlights spirit remains to travel and bring winter," Jack explained quietly.
Elsa felt shocked and she stared at him. The ice spikes disappeared and Jack fell on the floor.
"HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO HIM!" Merida rage cried, " HE JUST WANTED TO HELP YOU! LIKE WE ALL DID!"
Slowly Elsa went to Jack, still looking at him horrified. She knelt down next to him and his bloody hand touched her knee.
"R-remember... you can't blame yourself-," Jack exhaled and looked at Elsa directy, "-this was my fault."
The platinum blonde hair color was slowly coming back to Elsas hair. The spiky hairstyle disappeared and her hair drop down to her shoulders freely, forming curls. She felt sorry for Jack, sad of what had happened.
"Y-you are joking right? " Elsa whispered but Jack shook his head.
"I wish... but – this is not your fault," Jack mumbled.
Jack looked at Elsa while smiling faintly. Seeing her ice blue eyes kind again, tearing up as she was looking at his fading body made him feel better. She was here, she wasn't lost. Then he realized something.
"You will decide how things go," Jack whispered quietly.
"W-what...what are you saying?" Elsa's voice shattered.
"The prophecy... you can fix things END everything. Save the world," Jack coughed and closed his eyes. His hand kept squeezing the little heart shaped memory stone.
"Jack! Don't leave me!" Elsa shrieked desperately as she grabbed the hand of the man who she loved. The man who was fading away in front of her eyes.
They both tensed up when their hands touched, the stone being between them. The memories of past returned.
Jack had been flying around on his usual route to keep the winter around the world. He tried to pass the kingdom of Arendelle as fast as he could. However it had been hard to do so ever since Winter Solstice. He knew about the prophecy of him ruining things for a child who was still growing. In his heart he felt when she was born, the future woman who could control ice and might destroy the kingdom if her soul gives in to darkness. And him meeting her would be the start for it.
Then he decided something which proved out to be as selfish as when he went after the sound of his little sister to get the memory tube that he still carried with himself. He decided to take a tiny peek, a really small one. He just thought that he had been enduring the lure for three months so maybe now a tiny peek wouldn't ruin his promise to keep away from the girl? She had the same powers after all.
He flew to the castle of Arendelle, right behind a certain window. There he heard the king and queen chatting, worrying about the prophecy which the stone trolls shared to them. Jack listened and waited, nervously he kept fiddling his staff in his hands and hoped that Sandy wouldn't come too soon.
When the couple had left from the nursery he slowly pushed the window open with his wind powers. He flew inside in the dark bedroom. Slowly he sneaked next to a cradle, he heard the calm sounds of a sleeping baby.
Jack's heart was racing when he looked inside the cradle. His hands were squeezing his staff and he gulped. Usually he hang out with much older kids, playing snow fights but now for some reason he was keen on meeting her when he shouldn't.
He frowned while he watched the tiny baby with platinum blonde curls. She had much more hair than any other baby he had ever seen. He leaned closer as nothing seemed to prove that she had powers like him. Then the baby moved and he gasped and backed up, he stumbled on his own feet and fell to floor.
The baby started crying when she heard the crash. Jack panicked and worried that the couple would come back to soothe her soon and he was still here. Quickly he did some of his magic and icy animals started to dance above her cradle.
Jack got up while the baby calmed down, he sighed from relief. Just when he peeked into the cradle again she started to laugh and look at him. Looking at her made him feel strange, it was like his whole world turned upside down and there was nothing else than her.
Slowly he picked her up from the cradle, she snuggled against his chest and giggled. Their eyes met and he blushed. An image of a young woman with long platinum blonde hair and icy blue eyes came inside his head. His thumb brushed her chubby cheek and the tiny fingers of hers reached to grab his hand.
The strange feeling got worse as his heart was beating oddly. The woman was haunting his mind and when the baby laughed again he saw a flash of the woman laughing and saying his name. His heart throbbed and he gulped as he lifted the baby up. The baby had the same blue eyes like the woman did.
Jack narrowed his eyes and looked at the baby curiously. "What's your name little one," Jack wondered and brought her closer.
The baby grabbed a hold from his hair and laughed with her bright voice. Jack froze, he heard the woman talking again. "Elsa, my name is Elsa Jack," the woman laughed.
It felt like an arrow was shot through his chest. He hugged the tiny baby and was breathing fast. The baby grabbed to him dearly and giggled. He tried to place the baby back to her cradle but each time when he let go she just cried so much. She kept crying and crying as Jack tried to fix his mistake – way too late.
He had zinged with her. Zinged with the baby which he, the Nightlight, should never have met. Jack cursed his own existence as he picked her up. He flew out from the window with her, towards the stone troll home. The trolls looked at him furiously as he landed with the tiny baby.
"Please! Help me. Help us," Jack asked begging. He was crying as he spoke.
"What have you done Nightlight? You are the one who is said to push her to the powers of darkness," Pabbi sighed sadly and looked at the tiny baby who was squeezing Jack's hoodie and looking at him keenly, smiling and giggling.
"Make her forget. Make us forget!" Jack insisted in panic.
"Forget?" Pabbi blinked.
"Take the memory away, where we zing," Jack gulped and started to shake.
"The damage is done. You're drawn to each other from now on – even though you forget zinging with each other," Pabbi said sadly and took the baby from Jack.
Jack's heart ached as she cried after him.
"Fine, I'll do it," Pabbi said and touched her head.
He moved her memory of the zing to a tiny heart shaped pebble and then he gave her back to Jack. She didn't giggle anymore, she just looked at him curiously. Jack handed her back to Pabbi but she wasn't crying anymore but more of confused looking.
"Thank you," Jack sighed though he felt hurt. He really liked that laughter she had.
"Now your turn Nightlight. However this can be undone if you both touch this pebble at the same time," Pabbi said and showed the tiny heart shaped pebble to him just before wiping away Jack's memories of the zing. Then they made Jack take Elsa back to her cradle and swear that he would stay away from her.
The heart shaped pebble had done its duty and was now just a regular pebble without memories stored inside of it.
"We zinged Elsa... I asked them to take the memory away from us... your laugh, gosh I love it so much," Jack cried with his last strength and the back of his hand brushed over her cheek.
"Y-you...love it?" Elsa gulped and stared at Jack in shock. He was almost transparent and the floor was stained with his blood.
Yet he managed to squeeze her hand once to signal a 'yes' to her. It was just like when she had been communicating with him as he asked questions and she squeezed her hand once for a 'yes' and twice for a 'no'. Now he could see and hear her but he wanted to do that. A faint smile came to his face as her eyes tear up again.
Elsa shed tears that fell on his face as she let out a small laugh. She pulled him into a hug and was just about to say how much she loved him when a gust of wind blew over them. She flashed her eyes open when she felt his weight disappearing, how her arms wrapped tightly around the lump of clothes which was left. She let out a painful cry and screamed her agony. Desperately she clings onto his clothes where his body had just vanished with the wind. She still smelled his minty scent from them, her hand still squeezed the tiny heart shaped pebble and her fingernails dug to her palms.
Anna went to hug Elsa, she had witnessed how Jack's body turned into shimmering wind and disappeared. She couldn't stand seeing Elsa crying hysterically as she embraced the last things which were left of him. Hiccup had picked up the two pieces of Jack's staff and brought them to Elsa.
Snow, Jack's dragon, was whining and crying in the mountains. She had felt the presence of Jack leaving and being gone with the chilly wind that came somewhere from up where Manny himself was watching over the world.
