Two
Humming softly to yourself, you swayed to the rhythm of the melody that had been in your head since childhood. It had been your mother's favorite song. She had died so many years ago, so early, that you couldn't even remember her face.
Your father had always said that your infinite patience came from her, just like the kindness and gentleness towards everything and everyone who needed help.
With skilled fingers you filled a syringe with purple liquid, not enough to satisfy an addict, but enough to relieve pain and delusion.
The light of the sun made its way through the many holes in the walls and kissed your (S/C) skin with warmth. It was rare for the sun to shine in Zaun and even rarer for its rays to reach the Undercity.
Above you, someone giggled.
Smiling softly, you squinted upwards, caught a glimpse of the children spying on you between the beams of the roof and pretended not to notice them. As if by chance, you left a handful of candy on the table and turned away to lock the shimmer safely away again.
Again the children giggled, whispered and retreated into the shadows. A dull thud sounded, someone landed on the table.
"Aha!", in a flash you turned around and looked at the little boy who was stuffing his pockets with sweets. "I knew you little monkeys would steal my stuff!"
With a big grin you jumped towards him.
He wanted to run away, but his short legs didn't carry him fast enough.
Laughing, you grabbed him by the collar and tossed him into the air.
A scream left his mouth. Surprised, he let go of the candy.
The colorful marbles of sugar filled the air like confetti and fell to the ground with a soft clatter.
Immediately the other children came running and picked up everything they could get their hands on, while you were busy with the boy. Playfully you placed him on the table and began to tickle him from top to bottom.
Laughing hysterically, he turned and twisted like a fish out of water.
"Stop it! No, please don't!", he begged between laughs. "I beg you, Samaritan! Stop it!"
Giggling, you let him go.
Quick as a rabbit, he jumped off the table, hid in the group of other children and stuck his tongue out at you.
You did the same with a childish expression on your face and a grin on your lips.
"Didn't I teach you to be nice, Tov?", you asked, leaning against the table.
Grumpy like the little kid he was, he shook his head.
"I am nice to good people!", he assured and stole some candy from a girl's hand.
You raised an eyebrow.
"Oh? Then I am a bad person."
Immediately, the other kids shook their little heads.
"Samaritan is good to us!", another girl protested and punched Tov in the shoulder. "We have to be nice."
Chuckling softly, you lowered your eyes and had to shake your head at how cute the kids could be.
All of them were orphans or the children of shimmer addicts who had come to your hospital seeking help for their addiction. Most of the time you took care of the patients, with the help of other volunteers. But in addition to your work as a doctor, it was equally important to you to care for those who were left helpless and mostly unaware.
The children of Zaun were as innocent as any other child. The only sin they had committed was that they were born in a bad place to bad parents.
A heavy sigh left his lips at the thought that none of them would ever leave this place.
"Samaritan..?", a girl came up to you with a worried expression in her big googly eyes.
She was a little taller than the other children, probably also one or two years older, with blue hair and blue eyes. Her face was as round as an apple and she didn't look quite as beat up as the other kids.
Surprised, you examined her and knelt down to her.
"Oh? You're new here.", you gently patted her head. "I don't know your face yet. What is your name?"
Uncertainly the girl rocked on her heels.
"Pow- no, my name is Jinx now.", she mumbled and bit her lips. "Can I stay here and play with the others?"
You smiled, even though it puzzled you why she had to correct her own name.
"Of course you may, Jinx. Will you stay with us long?"
She shook her head, revealing a messily braided pigtail.
"I'm just visiting. That's all right."
"So, do you have a mommy to do your hair?", you pointed to her braid.
Again his shook his head.
"My dad is still learning to do it. Why do you ask?"
Smiling at her, you shook your head and stood up straight again.
"I'm just curious. You see, little Jinx, I take care of all those bratty kids here.", you flashed the group of mini terrorists a broad grin. "It's not that I wouldn't want to take you in, but my sanctuary is at its limit. So it's good that you have a dad. Is he taking good care of you?"
She nodded, now properly smiling for the very first time. She was missing a tooth, a big, fat gap was showing right in the front.
Amused by the sight you had to snort.
"My, did you loose your first tooth?", you asked and searched in your pocket to place an extra big candy in her little hand.
It was the fancy kind that you only handed out to kids on special occasions.
Gasping in surprise, Jinx shoved it into her mouth without thinking twice about it. As she swallowed, a spark lit up inside her pale eyes. Suddenly, she seemed as lively as possible for a kid.
"Someone hit me in the face.", she said, as if it was the most common thing to say for a child her age. "But don't worry. I took five of his teeth in return. And a finger. Wanna see?"
With a shiver crawling down your spine, you immediately raised your hands in defence.
"N-no thank you...", you smiled politely, yet horrified. "You seem to be a tough little one..."
