The Bet
My mother had gone off to visit with some friends, but not before putting Loki and I to work.
Erland and his wife and children had gone out to visit the others in the village and make sure they were alright. So it was just me, Loki, and a huge list of chores.
I was outside washing some clothes in the brook by our house when somebody stepped into my light. I looked up at him in annoyance.
"You know I could do that in half the time." Loki boasted, his hands glowing green. I sighed and wrung the water out of the dress. "And if you did then what would we do for the rest of the day?"
"I'm sure I could keep you occupied." Loki muttered.
"Besides I bet you couldn't do half the things the women do around here, without using your magic." I replied a smile curling at the corners of my mouth as I stood and hung the dress on the line.
"What makes you say that?!" Loki replied defensively.
I spun around and took his hands in mine. "Your hands are too soft. No callouses at all. You probably haven't had to work a day in your life." I smirked dropping his hands.
"That's not true. I could easily do what you mortals do!" He retorted.
I bit back a smile, looking into his frustrated green eyes.
"Fine then. IF you can do a whole day's work with no magic... and without complaining, we will use magic tomorrow and have the day off. But if you can't..." I trailed off.
"What?" He barked.
"You'll owe me...So do we have a bet?" I asked extending my hand.
"You're on!" he smirked, shaking my hand.
My heart skipped.
"So what are we doing first?" he ventured.
"Mucking out the horse stalls." I grinned as his face fell.
