Chapter Twenty Two - Strength

I tried to open my eyes, but blinked them closed at the bright daylight that flooded the room.

I was laying in a bed that was soft as a cloud.

I tried to sit up but only succeeded in groaning.

"Shh shhhh shhh." A gentle voice called out to me. "Moving will only make the pain worse."

I opened my eyes to slits and observed the regal woman sitting next to me.

Her blue eyes were soft and caring. Her hair was piled up onto her head in one of the strangest ways I'd ever seen.

My mouth was so dry, I licked my lips.

"Here." The woman spoke soothingly, she raised a glass to my lips and helped me drink.

The drink tasted like apples with a hint of honey. It warmed me and brought strength to my limbs.

"Now darling, can you remember what happened?" The lady asked in her familiar accent.

I sit up slowly and start to sob. She wraps her arms around me, holding me as I cry.

"Oh Gods." I sniffle. "Where's Loki?"

She pulls back and looks at me, her powder blue eyes searching my face.

"He is serving out his punishment." She replies gravely.

"What do you mean?" I gasp.

"Odin, my husband has sentenced him to a horrible fate."

"What do you mean?!" I exclaim.

Her face pales. "He is to be chained to a rock... with a snake dripping venomous poison on him."

"WHAT?! He saved me! He tried to save my village! Where is Odin?" I growl.

"No amount of persuasion will change his mind." She frowns.

"Oh yeah? Well he hasn't met me yet." I reply standing to my feet, as I do I notice my new gown.

It is made of a light material and covers much less than I am used to. I resist the urge to take the blanket with me.

"The throne room is down that hall." She smirked.

I nod and storm out of the room.

My bare feet are cold as they cross the vast marble flooring. The two massive doors are blocked by two equally massive guards. They cross their spears and deny my entrance.

"I wish to speak with Odin."

The man smirks. "Your name miss?"

I dislike the man's wandering eyes.

"Sigyn...Loki's wife." His eyes snap to mine.

"I'll let the all father know you're here." He replies.

Two minutes later and the doors were opened for me. I walked in with my head held high.

"Sigyn, is it?" The white haired bearded man asked nonchalantly.

"Where is Loki?" I snapped.

"That is no way to speak to a king mortal." He frowns.

"You are not my king."

He sighs disinterestedly. "Loki is being punished for going against my rule. He should not have even heard of our agreement with the frost giants."

"Agreement? what agreement?" I spat

"We were to let them have a few villages on midguard, or else they would mount an attack on Asgard."

"You're telling me you could have protected my village?!" I gasp.

"Sometimes few have to be sacrificed for the good of many."

"And who gives you the power to decide which lives are worth taking?"

"I do."

I clench my fists and take a step forward, then remember the guards outside the door. Odin raises an eyebrow at me as I spin on my heel and leave the throne room.

I meet the kind woman again in the hallway.

"I told you he would not change his mind." She sighed.

"What can we do?" I reply unwilling to give up.

"There is nothing we can do. It's not like we can fight our way out of the castle. We are only two women after all~"

I look at her skeptically.

"I can't help you. All the doors are guarded, even though the ones to the stables only have one guard..."

I nodded.

"But there is only one way to get rid of Loki's chains."

"Magic?"

"Precicely... that's why you need your mother."

"What?!" I laugh. "My mother died in childbirth with me."

She smiles sadly at me as we round the corner into my room.

Verdandi looks up at me.

"No... she didn't." The woman replies gently.

"All-mother." Verdandi bows.

"Just Frigga if you please." She smiles.

"I can free your son if you help us leave the castle." Verdandi replies.

"You're Loki's mother?!"

Frigga smiles at me.

"Yes she is. How are you?" Verdandi asked, laying a gentle hand on my stomach.

"We have to focus on Loki now." I replied brushing off her hand.

"The guards change in three minutes, if we want to make it before the security is doubled we need to leave now." Queen Frigga spoke determinedly.

"Yes, lets go."

"Where are your shoes?" Frigga asks.

"I rarely wear shoes." I reply.

We arrived at the door guarded by a single guard.

"I can get us past him." Frigga says softly as we three poke our head round the corner.

But I had already scanned the room. I grabbed an ornamental gold bowl.

"Miss what are you doing?" The guard asked.

I spun around and Smashed the golden bowl on his head. It made a large gong noise as the man slumped to the ground. Frigga snorted.

"I was going to enchant him." Verdandi gasped.

"No time." I replied heading through the door.

Frigga teleported in front of us to lead the way. Her dress swirling around her ankles.

She snapped her fingers and the stable hands froze.

"We'll take these horses, they're the fastest."

We didn't even bother to saddle them.

Frigga lead the way across the beautiful landscape, finally the trees become fewer and fewer and the grass turns brown. We approach a cave surrounded by craggy cliffs and scraggly bushes.

"It's just up ahead." She announced.

In my panic to leave I still had the golden bowl. I headed determinedly to the yawning mouth of the cave.

The air was cold and moist inside. I could hear dripping, then a sound that to this day I can never un-hear.

Loki, my love, my heart screaming in agony.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!"

"Loki?!" I called.

The cave was dark and I could not see. The queen summoned a flame and lit a torch on the wall.

Loki panted. I gasped as my eyes adjusted to the light, for above Loki was curled a massive green snake it's horrible fangs open in a permanent smile. Poison dripped off the fangs. I took the bowl in my hand and held it under the monster's giant mouth.

Loki blinked as the cave lit with Frigga's fire.

"Mother?" he asked, his voice raw.

"We'll get you out darling." She replied, working with Verdandi on the chains.

His eyes slowly turned up to rest on me.

"Sigyn?" Loki asked, looking at me like I'd disappear.

"It's me my love." I replied over the steady dripping of the poison.

My arms burn as the bowl fills.

"How are you standing? How, you were injured." Loki asks.

Frigga clears her throat.

He lets out a gasp of understanding. "Mother you didn't!"

"It was the only way..."

"What did you do?" Verdandi asks.

"I gave her the last of Idun's magical apples..."

"You what?" I ask the burning in my arms growing stronger.

The chains rattle as they break off of Loki, his mother and Verdandi help him up. I set the bowl of poison carefully down on the rocky floor of the cave.

"Asguardians are just like Midguardians, the only difference being the magical apples."

"And my mother gave you one of these apples..." Loki pants.

"What are you saying?" I ask.

"You're immortal now..." Frigga replies.
