Chapter Fifteen - The Calm Before the Storm.
The sun shone brightly off the green pine trees, casting friendly shadows on the forest floor. Birds chirped and fluttered about trying to find some food for their babies and flowers stretched their petals into the sunlight.
A soft breeze wafted the smells of the flowers, and the salty water around us, as Loki led me into the forest.
"Where are we going?!" I asked, grabbing onto his arm.
"We're almost there, keep your eyes closed."
I walked on uncertainly, questioning why I had decided to trust Loki.
The sun illuminated my face, making my eye-lidded view very orange....
"How much farther are we to your surprise?" I asked.
"Almost there now..." Loki's voice spoke on my left.
I sighed and plodded onward. When suddenly my foot caught on a tree root. I opened my eyes and watched in horror as the rocky ground rose up to meet my face.
I stopped just inches from the ground. Gasping as Loki's strong arms wrapped around me.
"Are you alright?!" he asked, his face inches from mine.
"Ye-yeah, I'm ...I'll be. I'm okay." I stammered, gazing into Loki's bright green eyes.
His eyes drifted down to my lips and I quickly extricated myself from his arms.
"Wow this place is amazing!" I chirped nervously.
"Thank you, I found it on my way to the village, before I met you." Loki replied smoothly.
"We must have taken the road out of the village, and by the berry bushes then?" I asked.
"Yes."
"Wonderful!"
The grass was soft and green and Blåveis flowers had popped up around the small clearing. Their bright blue mimicking the sky above us.
The sun shone down on the green grassy patch and I could spot lavenders growing around the edges too.
Loki's voice interrupted my reverie, "When I saw this place I knew I had to come back... and when I met you, I knew I wanted to bring you with me..."
I looked at Loki wide eyed.
He stared back at me, suddenly he broke eye contact and shook his head.
"Right well anyways, Let me just..." He waved his hands and suddenly a cream colored blanket appeared and unfurled covering a section of the soft grass. "Here. We are having lunch here today." He remarked concentrating and waving his hands, bringing a basket out of the nothingness and setting it down with his green magic.
"Lunch?" I asked.
"Look, I know you only usually have two meals... but today I wanted to spoil you."
"I don't know if I'll be able to eat..." I replied.
"None of this is filling. It's mostly pastries and such!"
"What is a Pasty?"
Loki chuckled. "Why don't you try it and see for yourself?"
He gestured dramatically to the blanket and watched as I cautiously sat down on it.
A huge grin formed on his face as I side eyed the basket.
"Go on then!" he encouraged.
"What?" I replied cluelessly.
"Open it..."
I squinted at him and moved the lid back slowly.
The basket was dark and I couldn't see in it.
"Go on~" he smirked.
Despite my better judgement I reached my hand into the cavernous basket... and let out a wild scream as something slithered up my arm.
I pulled my arm out of the basket and came eye to eye with a red eyed, green scaled snake.
My eyes must have been saucers.
I seized it by it's neck and flung it into the woods. It slithered away into the shadows.
I shivered and turned back to Loki...
Whose smile had somehow grown more mischievous.
"Surprise!" Loki jeered.
"You utter nidingr!" I shrieked, closing the distance between us and slapping at his arms.
"What?!" Loki laughed, as he raised his arms defensively.
"Villain!" I shouted, pouncing on him like a lynx.
"Hey now let's not say anything we'll regret..." Loki smiled as he took me by my wrists and rolled on top of me.
My throat went dry. I stilled.
Loki's face went serious as we gazed into each other's eyes.
He opened his mouth and muttered. "... I love you."
My eyes widened as I attempted to shove him off of me.
"-And please know that when I say this I mean it. My love for you will not change. No matter what you decide." He added hastily, as I finally shoved him off.
"Loki-"
"Please. Say you love me too..."
I could feel the tears filling my eyes.
"I love you." I croaked.
And then his lips crashed down on mine, and I was flying. My heart was soaring and I never wanted to come down.
I choked back a sob, pulling away as reality came crashing down on me.
"What's wrong my love?!" Loki panted.
"I-I can't do this!" I pulled away from his arms again.
"Sigyn-"
"NO! People will die Loki! My family and friends will die!" I shouted, standing to put more distance between us.
Birds vacated the trees around us, startled by my noise.
Loki stood up pacing around me, his eyes flaming,"So what?! What have these people done that's so great?" He snarled.
I recoiled as if he had slapped me.
"How DARE you!" I shrieked.
"How dare I ? HOW DARE I?!?! You should know better than to refuse a God!" He hissed.
"You are no god! Gods are supposed to be wise and kind and you are neither!" I spat.
Loki's pupils became pinpricks.
"So what now? Are you really going to marry that oaf?!" He asked cocking his head to the side.
"Yes." I replied, my voice shaking. "I am."
Loki's face darkened.
"You don't even know what I'm offering you!"
He waved his hands conjuring an image of Asgard's golden halls.
"You could be a queen, MY queen and instead you shove me aside?! Turn me away?!"
"At least Theoric realizes that I care about my family." I hissed.
I could tell I had struck a nerve by how ramrod straight he stood.
"So that's it then? Shall I leave?" He clipped.
"Perhaps you should." I replied.
He sighed, collecting himself.
"Sigyn," He was pleading now, "Sigyn think of yourself. How miserable you'd be if you marry him. Come with me and I'll give you all the love my heart can offer. Save me from my lonesomeness. I beg you."
I could no longer speak. I shook my head brokenly, as I felt heart my heart tear in two.
"Fine." Loki's voice was devoid of emotion. "I wish you the best."
He walked over to me and gently caressed my face, before teleporting away in a cloud of green smoke.
I do not know how long I lay there crying on that cream colored blanket.
But when Verdandi finally found me I couldn't leave it there. I brought it home with me and folded it. Putting it on top of my mother's blanket as the rain pattered on our rooftop. She sat there with me till I fell asleep.
