Chapter Thirteen
Honeymoon Disaster
Edward
"Where are we going?" Alice asked, smiling to herself as I grabbed the last of our luggage off of the airport pick up belt.
"I know you've already seen it." I chuckled, shooting her a look from over my shoulder.
"Yes, and I absolutely love it!" She giggled and I smiled widely at her enthusiasm.
"Then let's hurry up and get there." I smiled and ushered her out to the cab.
As a wedding present Carlisle and Esme are letting Alice and I borrow their island off the coast of Brazil, Isle Esme. It's large jungle, sprawling beach, and wildlife is the perfect place for Alice and I to escape for awhile.
And give me some time to think of a plan.
"Oh look! There it is!" Alice cheered as we approached the dock of Isle Esme. "It's so beautiful here." She declared as I tied the boat to the dock and got our luggage out quickly.
"Almost as beautiful as you." I commented absentmindedly and she attacked me with kisses.
"Okay, okay, let me at least get the luggage to the house before I have to take you to bed." I chuckled.
"Your feelings are just as intense as mine." She retorted, giggling as we quickly went inside and threw our luggage down before resuming where we had paused.
The next few days consisted of Alice and I doing some of our favorite things. We went on a walk under the water to watch the exotic sea creatures, made love, played chess, made love, made competitions out of hunting, made love, and even went into the city at night to some of the local parties.
It was at one of these parties that the incident happened.
Alice and I had been dancing and having fun amongst the native Brazilians when suddenly we were separated. I looked for her everywhere, frantically searching, and finally found her sobbing in a nearby dark alleyway.
"Alice?" I called out to her, her back turned to me. "Are you alright?" I asked worriedly.
She jumped up onto her feet and took off running through the streets of Brazil. I was left shocked and tried to run after her but in the confusion and the crowded streets, I completely lost her scent.
Not knowing what to do, I raced back to the island and called Carlisle quickly.
"I can't find her anywhere! She just panicked and ran! I don't know if she's okay, what if something happened to her?!" I stressed over the phone to my father.
"Calm down Edward, tell me exactly what's happened." He responded and I gave him the entire story.
"That's very troubling, Alice is never like that." He sighed. "I would advise you to just stay on the island, she'll come back soon I'm sure. She may have just been overwhelmed by something." He spoke calmly and I relaxed considerably.
"Alright, thank you, I'll call you when she she returns." I promised him and we said our goodbyes.
I spent the next three days pacing the island and worrying about Alice. Several times I almost left to go search for her on the mainland but I remembered my fathers advice and stopped myself from going. Alice loves me, she'll return eventually.
On the fourth morning of Alice's disappearance, I had been sitting in the kitchen thinking about calling Carlisle to ask him to come and help me look for her when suddenly there was a knock on the front door.
I quickly rushed to open it and cried out in relief as I brought Alice into my arms tightly.
"I've been so worried." I told her, still hugging her to me.
"I know. I'm sorry." She spoke in monotone and I instantly started worrying even more.
I pulled back to look down at her. She had a silk scarf wrapped around her head and neck, a long coat covering her entire outfit, and she had large sunglasses on that completely hid her eyes from me.
"Alice, are you alright? What happened?" I asked and she sobbed as she folded herself into my embrace.
"I've done something awful." She cried.
"Shh, it's okay. Whatever you've done we can handle it." I promised her.
"You don't understand!" She sobbed. "I don't know what I did!"
"Then how do you know you did something wrong?" I asked.
"Look at me Edward!" She cried and took off her sunglasses.
Her eyes were a chilling crimson red.
"I've killed someone Edward and I don't even remember who they were! One minuet I was dancing with you and the next I was laying on the ground and was covered in still warm blood!" She exclaimed and undid her coat, revealing her blood stained dress. "I was so ashamed to face you that it took me four days to work up enough courage to come and beg you for forgiveness but I don't think I deserve anymore forgiveness than I've already been given." She fell to the floor, tearlessly crying.
"It's going to be okay Alice." I promised her, feeling completely useless in comforting my wife.
I didn't know what to say to her, how to help her cope with whatever had happened, and I was terrified that this newest amnesia episode was just the first of many.
I had managed to get Alice bathed, into some fresh clothes, and put into bed with only minor breakdowns. When she curled up in bed and hugged her legs to her chest, I knew to leave her alone and let her process everything.
I checked on her sporadically throughout the night and every time I did she was in the same position and looked just as depressed as the last time. My seventh check in however, she was still lying with her legs to her chest but she had a new expression on her face, one of complete and total emptiness.
I chose then to call Carlisle. I told him that she had had a amnesia episode, but I left out the part where she had been covered in foreign blood and sporting red eyes. He told me that it sounded like she was in shock and that I should keep an eye on her. If she doesn't return to normal in the next few days, I should bring her back home so Carlisle can look after her.
In the morning, we decided to go on a hike around the island to get some exercise and sight see. Or really, I decided to go and dragged Alice, still in complete shock, along with me to try to help clear her mind.
As we were walking, she got caught in a strange plant that was covered in thorns and she surprisingly cried out in pain. I rushed to her side and helped her out of the thorns and noticed that one of them had stabbed itself deep into her skin and created a long gash that was oozing venom.
"That's not supposed to happen." I told Alice, who seemed completely uncaring that her impenetrable skin was broken.
"Oh well." She shrugged. "I'll wrap it in something when we get back I guess." She spoke and trudged forward, leaving me stunned.
Later, when we had made it back to the house and Alice had managed to wrap her wound in gauze, she joined me in the bed room where I was laying down and reading a book.
She paused in the doorway instead of weaseling her way under my book and into my arms like she normally does.
Her sad crimson red eyes dug into me as I read. I found them frightening and eerie. I've only ever known Alice with either innocent emerald green or alluring golden eyes, never this chilling but somehow seductive red.
"Do you still love me?" She asked suddenly, her voice sounding normal but void of emotion.
"Of course I do Alice!" I responded, throwing my book on to the nightstand.
"Then why won't you touch me anymore?" She asked, leaving me confused. "Ever since the wedding you haven't been able to keep your hands off of me. And now that I've come back, you haven't touched me once since my apology." She noted. "You're afraid of me." She spoke soundly.
"I'm not afraid of you."
"Yes, you are." She nodded. "You're just as afraid of me as I am afraid of myself."
"Alice, you're wrong." I retorted.
"No, I'm not!" She snapped. "I'm not wrong. I see the look in your eyes, you're afraid. You're afraid I'm going to go crazy, that I'll turn into a savage. You're afraid I'm not ever going to be the same. And you're just as afraid of my visions as I am." She explained quietly.
"Your visions are amazing, why would they scare me?" I questioned her.
"Because you're afraid that they will drive me crazy again, just like they did when I was human." She nodded as she came over to the side of the bed.
"How did you-"
"I've been thinking about my human self a lot lately. Ever since I read that letter and overheard your conversation with Carlisle about my mothers death, all I've been able to do is think. And do you know what I remember?" She asked, leaning in close to my face. "The visions that never came true."
"What?" I asked, dazed by her sudden closeness. I knew that I should be frightened by her sudden change, but in all honestly it only excited me and made me want her more.
"The visions, the ones that never came true, those are the clearest memories. The voices of things that would never be said, flashes of light, glimpses of people's faces," She laughed humorlessly, "and they all drove me crazy."
