Chapter 29 - Realization
Warnings: Betrayal, manipulation, kidnapping
Third Person POV
Bullet/Caleb Higgins.
He loved his twin, but when his twin went missing, he got really nervous.
Caleb had been walking down the hallway, mainly to the basement, where his brother was, when he heard voices.
Spade and Rock's voices to be exact.
Because it's always a wonderful idea to eavesdrop on people, Caleb decided to listen in on what they were talking about.
It started off normal, they were just talking about the plan that they had discussed with the twins the day before.
And then it got more concerning and confusing.
"Do you have any clue where Blade went?" Spade questions, sounding a bit exasperated.
Caleb heard Rock's voice next. "No. Where do you think he disappeared off to?"
"He wouldn't ever leave his brothers" Spade states.
Yeah, he wouldn't leave us, Caleb reminds himself.
"What if that was Haste's plan?" Rock responds. "Haste purposely got caught, and went to the Brooklyn and Manhattan Newsies for help. Blade somehow went there and they told him what our plan was."
"Would Haste really do that though?" Spade questions. "He knows that that's putting Bullet and Blade in a lot of danger, more than I think he would want to risk."
Why? What danger? Caleb wonders.
"I think he would. He knows our plan, Spade" Rock answers.
Do they have a plan that is different from the one they told me? Caleb's eyebrows furrow.
"If he betrayed us, he's dead right after the Higgins" Spade states, using a tone of voice that left no room for arguments.
Caleb's eyes widen in shock as he steps back, away from the door.
"What's that?" Rock questions.
Caleb's breathing speeds up. I have to get Anthony and get out of here.
"Someone's been listening, come on" Spade's voice answers.
Caleb turns and runs down the hallway, as the door opens.
He heard feet running after him, why is this hallway so long? It's never felt this long.
Apparently he didn't watch where he was going, since he tripped, falling flat on his face.
Like brother, like brother.
None of the Higgins siblings are very dexterous.
Caleb gritted his teeth, trying to crawl forward, but someone's foot on his back stopped him.
"Nothing good ever comes eavesdropping, you of all people should know that, Bullet" Spade snarls, bending down next to Caleb.
Caleb scowls. He tried to get up, but Rock's foot (which was on his back) keep him down.
"You lied to us" Caleb snarls, feeling betrayed and shocked.
Spade just laughs. It was a sinister laugh, and Caleb hated it. "You two were so stupid to fall for it. It's call manipulation, my friend."
Caleb continues to try to get up. "You aren't gonna get away with this."
Spade just laughs again. "Oh, my dear Caleb, we already have."
Caleb scowls again.
Rock grabs the back of his shirt, pulling him up.
Caleb sends a punch his way, but his fist was caught mid-air by Rock.
Spade clicks his tongue, shaking his head. "Uh, uh, uh. Don't even try, it's not going to work."
Rock and Spade walk Caleb down the hall to the room they had just been in when Caleb had eavesdropped on their conversation.
Rock throws Caleb into the room, and he lands on the ground with a cry of pain.
Spade closes the door while Rock stands Caleb up and holds his arms behind him.
Caleb struggled against his grip, but he knew it was useless. "I trusted you. We were friends."
"No." Spade responds, not turning to Caleb as he looked for something. "You thought we were friends."
"I can't believe I trusted you" Caleb scowls, trying to wiggle his way out of Rock's grip.
Spade grabs a bottle and a cloth, turning back to Caleb. "Struggle all you want, Caleb, but you're not getting out of this whether you try to or not."
Caleb scowls at him, but notices what was in his hands.
His eyes widen. "Spade-"
"Nothing you say will stop this, Caleb. We need you out of our way so we can go through with this, just like your brother" Spade responds, opening the bottle.
Caleb starts struggling more. I need to get out of here. I need to get Anthony out of here.
Caleb freezes in realization. We've been horrible to him. Were his friends right?
They said that was okay since we were family... they were lying...
Oh God. I've been horrible to him. He's never going to forgive me.
Caleb was so lost in thought that he didn't realize Spade was coming towards him until Spade had put the cloth over his mouth.
No! No! No, no, no.
Caleb tries to get the cloth off of his face, but with Rock holding his arms behind his back and Spade covering his mouth, he couldn't.
His world got really dizzy quicker than he thought it would.
I'm sorry, Anthony. I'm so sorry...
And with that thought, Caleb gave up fighting, falling limp into Rock's arms.
Later
Caleb woke up a few hours later.
It was dark outside, which was good since it meant he wouldn't have to deal with the light making his headache worse than it already was.
Caleb just laid on the cold, hard ground for a few minutes, before forcing himself to at least sit up.
It took him a few minutes, but he did get up.
He looked around.
He was in the room they kept Anthony in, and Anthony was next to him, asleep.
Caleb looked over him, immediately regretting everything. I'm sorry, Anth.
Caleb forces himself to stand, clinging to the wall for support.
If he let go, he would fall, and he knew that.
He worked his way over to the window, looking for a way out.
Caleb played with the bars, figuring out which ones would be the easiest to remove.
He only had to remove two bars. It shouldn't be that hard.
Caleb gripped onto one of the bars that he thought would be the easiest to remove.
He turned it a little bit, cursing at how loud it was.
He continued to try to remove it, when a weak voice called out to him. "What's h-happening?"
Caleb chokes back a sob. "I'm sorry, Anth. I'm- I'm getting us both out of here."
"Caleb?" Race whispers. Caleb nods.
Caleb had almost got the bar off of the window, when the door swung open.
Caleb freezes in his place, before turning around.
"I knew you were too stubborn to quit." Spade snarls out, standing in the doorway. "When do you figure out enough is enough? When do you realize that you can't win?"
Caleb scowls at him. "I don't give up. I'm a Higgins, you should know this."
Caleb tries to get the bar out so he can have some sort of defense, but Spade grabs him and throws him across the room.
Caleb cries out in pain as he lands next to Race.
Spade sticks digs the bar back in its place, before closing the door, taking out his blade. "Isn't it ironic? Your brother was named after being good with these."
Spade spins the blade in his fingers, as Race and Caleb cling to each other, crawling back with every step Spade takes towards them.
"Spade- there's another way" Caleb tries to talk some sense into Spade, keeping his eyes fixed on the blade in his hands.
Spade just laughs. "There's no other way, Caleb. Whether you like it or not, you aren't getting out of this alive."

Yes. I am on break.
But I've had these next two (maybe even three) chapters done for over and week and I want to post them.
Thank you.
