37: The beauty of us
"Grimes." The nurse called out, searching around the doctor's office.
"That's us!" I raised my hand and me and Rick quickly got up. Everyone stared at us, awkwardly.
When we reached the back, the nurse greeted us with a great big affectionate smile, and a pat on the back for me.
She shut the door and turned to us.
"Wow. I must say, in all my 22 years of nursing, I've never seen a couple so beautiful. I bet this baby is going to be gorgeous."
"Thank you." We both smiled.
"So, Me Shon is it?"
"It's michonne. You can call me Meesh. It's much easier to remember." I chuckled.
"Okay. Meesh and Richard Grimes--"
"Rick." He interrupted and I gently smacked his arm.
"Yes, take a seat on the bed over there. I'm going to ask you a few questions and the doctor will be in here soon so y'all can hear your baby's heart beat."
"Oh man!" Rick took off his hat and clutched it tight, the nurse could do nothing but smile at him.
"First child?"
"Together, it is. We each have a child of our own." I nodded, taking a seat on the bed.
"It's my first experience " Rick's cheeky smile always made me feel at home.
"I'm so happy for you, Mr.Grimes.. and you, Meesh. What have you been eating lately?"
"Uhh..Mainly fried vegetables, lots of Pedialyte and water.. sweets every now and then." I explained.
"Great, wonderful. Try to stay away from fried things for a little white. Steamed vegetables are alternatives.. don't forget your meat, the baby needs protein.. now, I see you're a very.. fit woman, have you been exercising?"
"I try to atleast everyday."
"Mm," she nodded her head no "not what I wanted to hear. Take it easy, for the baby, can you do that?"
I glanced at Rick and back at the nurse. Could I?
"She will. I'll make sure of it." Rick cleared his throat and placed his hands on his hips like he was in charge. I love when he does that, like yes, dominant me but also love me and make me feel safe.
"That's what I like to hear. Have you been experiencing any pain.. migraines?"
"No. There's been alot of mood swings.. but definitely no pain." I chuckled.
"Okay great," she smiled "everything seems to be fine with you. I'll make sure to check your blood pressure and your sodium levels before you leave today. The doctor will be in soon. Have a great day you two, okay?"
"You too." Rick and I both smiled.
She walked out and Rick flopped into the chair, exhausted like -- stressed.
"The first part is over with.. now just the second and we're Okay... you're okay, yeah?" He mumbled
"Rick. You don't have to worry."
He didn't answer me.
"Richard."
Sometimes I wish he would've never went through all the sad things he did with Lori, and sometimes I wish I had never told him I lost my child but, here we are.
We sat in silence for a while, until the doctor walked in with a big warm smile.
His name tag read Rovia.
He was short, with long hair that he tied in a bun, a fairly nice beard, and a scar on his left cheek. It was undeniably noticable.
"Hellloo!" He came over and shook my hand, and glanced at a very nervous Rick.
"I'm Dr. Tom Rovia, Your OBGYN."
"It's so nice to meet you... I'm Michonne."
"It's a pleasure. And you must be Rick?"
Rick nodded and wiped his face haphazardly.
"So, I'm going to go ahead and jump into the ultra sound. I'm going to need you to lay back and relax while I get everything ready."
"Do you mind if I video chat my sons and they watch long? They are away right now but they wouldn't want to miss it." I queried.
Dr. Rovia smiled and nodded. He was so handsome, and adorable I couldn't even look him in the eyes.
I quickly pulled out my phone and requested face timed Carl. He answered in no time, just smiling like a fool.
"Hey Michonne," his voice lagged a bit but I still understood between the jitty static.
"Hey! How's Atlanta?"
"Great," he smiled and peered over his shoulder "Andre's asleep right now but he won best defense liner today."
"That's my boy." I smiled. "Anyway, I'm here. We're about to get the news--"
"Whether the baby is okay or not?"
"Yep," Dr. Rovia shot back around with gloves and a bottle of gel like paste.
"Hello." Carl smiled, meeting eyes with my OBGYN.
"Dr. Rovia," he smiled, placing the gloves in his hand and flopping into his chair.
He hooked up his machines as Carl and I carried on conversation, mainly about how nervous his father was.
Finally, it was time for the ultrasound.
Rick held my hand, and in his other free one, he held the phone. Carl muted himself so we couldn't hear the static and unnecessary noise, but he watched close like a hawk -- biting his nails with every step we did.
And I just laid there, my eyes closed, praying to God.
"Alright michonne, I'm going to warn you -- this is a little cold."
"Oh I can handle I--- ooo." I winced as he spread the gel like paste across my stomach.
It was freezing.
He took his camera monitor and ran it across my stomach.
There was a long appointed silence. Rick breathed so heavily and I still prayed.
"There it is!" Dr. Rovia exclaimed, "the baby's heart beat."
I shot my eyes open and Rick could do nothing but place his hands on his hips like he always does. He had forgotten Carl was still watching.
"So, the baby's okay?"
Rick murmured.
"Yes." Rovia shut off the machines, took off his gloves and fixed his bun, "your next appointment will be in a month or two so, and this will be your gender reveal. Congratulations, Michonne -- Rick."
I smiled faintly and Rick gripped my hand.
"Thank you." He chuckled.
Rovia nodded and placed his hands in his pockets.
"It's my job. Now, michonne, get plenty rest and take it easy every now and then. I will see you both at your next appointment. Also, you two are a very, very beautiful couple." He said, and then he disappeared into the hallway.
