22: Good Cards
Rick's P.O.V
I still can't process what the doctor just told me.
I cant believe Michonne's pregnant..
I just feel...
Lost.
What the actual hell is going on?
I glanced back over at her, still pretty much knocked out.
Still so beautiful.
And that's all I did for a solid 30 minutes. I watched her sleep so gracefully.
Her eyes would flutter open once or twice, and her fingers would twitch as they laid my upon my hand, and sometimes her breathing would increase rapidly-- but that was all okay to me. As long as I was close to her.
Soon enough, her eyes fluttered open, to reveal me staring at her intensely.
She jerked back but instantly reconciled.
She took her hands off of mine and gently rubbed her temples, "Well, shit. What happened?"
"You fainted," I nodded, "that's all."
"Feels like I got hit in the head by a car going 92 miles an hour."
"You didn't." I chuckled, but on the inside I was screaming. Does she know?
My anxiety began to take over--- I started to bite at my lip and fidget with my belt and she began to notice.
"You okay sweetie?"
"Yeah," I sighed "I think."
"What do you mean 'you think'?" She asked, lying back down.
I couldn't hold it in anymore. I seriously was about to burst. But I didn't want to pressure her, or stress her out even more but I seriously couldn't keep quiet.
"Did you know?" I outbursted, then closed my eyes -- waiting for her reply.
"Know what? What's going on Rick?"
"I guess you don't know," I sighed of relief and ran my hand over my face.
"Is there something wrong?" She asked, a bit more paranoid now.
I got up on my feet and slowly paced the room. How do I tell a someone they're pregnant.. I'm not cut out for this.
"Well, you see.." I started "There's like a baby in your stomach."
She frantically jumped up and stared at me like a deer in headlights.
"What?" she bellowed. "H-how do you know?!"
"The doctor said that you were pregnant, and I didn't know that you didn't know... but now you know." I chuckled, but she didn't even smile. Her face was as blank as Donald Trump's brain.
So I walked back over to her and took a seat upon the hospital bed.
"You okay?" I mumbled.
She nodded her head no and still stared ahead like a ghost was talking to her.
"Why not?"
"I'm not prepared, mentally... Rick, do you want this child --"
"Of course." I blurted, not giving her a chance to finish.
"No, like, Rick we're not even married and --"
"That's okay Meesh."
She closed her eyes and clenched her fist, "Interrupt me one more time and you'll be in a hospital bed too."
Hmph. I chuckled faintly but scooted away, because low-key, Michonne could beat me up and that's no doubt.
"Rick," she sighed "I just started working at this wonderful law firm, and I can't take days off because of a baby.. and-and we aren't in any state to take care of a baby--"
"I am!" I exclaimed, jumping from the bed so I wouldn't get slapped for interrupting her. "You don't have to quit your job, okay? Just work from home. Stay home and let me Carl and Andre take care of you. We can do this, okay? And if things get a little tough, we've always got friends, we've always got a family."
She nodded and ran her hands over her face. "Alright."
"Yes!" I smiled "Man, I can't wait to tell Maggie about this."
"No!" She shouted, scaring the near hell out of me.
"I-I I dont want to tell anyone. Not just yet."
"Why not? Aren't you happy!?"
"I am. I get to raise a child with you, why wouldn't I be?" She smiled, but I could hear her voice crack.
Something's obviously wrong.
I walked over to her and sat down on the bed.
"What's wrong love?"
She didn't say anyrhing. We sat in silence for a couple of minutes before I grabbed her hand and squeezed it tight.
"You can tell me anything."
"I don't this to be like last time," she whispered.
"What do you mean? What happened last time?"
"I was pregnant after Andre. His father and I were beyond excited, we told the family, threw a party, brainstormed names," her voice cracked once more and this time she began to cry. I held on tight to her hands because I'm pretty sure I know what's coming next and I wanted her to know it's okay.
"I lost my baby Rick." She leaned into my shoulder, and sobbed. She cried like she had never cried before -- I mean, I haven't seen her look so pitiful.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
"Don't be. I just don't want it to happen again, that's it. I'm not worried about my job or anything like that, I just don't want to feel what I felt at that time." She sniffled.
"You don't have to do this," I sighed "I'm fine with whatever you want to do."
.
.
.
"I'm okay." She nodded, after I asked her for about the 827473th time.
"And we'll tell the others that you are pregnant when?"
"12 weeks," she smiled "Or when I'm showing."
"Why so long?" I asked.
She took a deep breath and repositioned herself on my chest. I don't know how we both managed to lay on a single wide hospital bed but we did.
"That's when I'm out of danger of another miscarriage. I mean, it could always happen still but it's less likely to."
Her voice was still trembling and her body was shaking. Either from the cold room or just because.
I gently leaned down and placed a big kiss on her forehead and smiled.
I really hope everything works out. These are the good cards in my life. God took the bad cards and dealt the good ones -- and I don't wanna give it up.
I won't.
