Chapter Three
In the morning, Dan woke up feeling much better and his headache was only slightly simmering in the back of his brain. At ten o'clock, he and Phil both walked down to see what breakfast was available. Phil, referring back to his 'make the most of America' ideology from the night before, suggested going to iHop and everybody else seemed to agree. Dan, Phil, Louise, Hazel, Cat, Tyler, Zoe, Alfie, Joe, Caspar and Marcus all crossed over the road to the conveniently placed iHop opposite the hotel. Dan had secretly started to wonder if Phil had been the one to pick the hotel and if he had picked it due to the extraordinary amount of american chain restaurants in the immediate vicinity.
They both had pancakes and Dan had some of Phil's when he couldn't finish them.
'Careful Daniel or by the end of this trip you'll have become a pancake!' Phil laughed as he watched Dan have some of Louise's pancakes too.
'You were the one who wanted the iHop experience Phil. You can't just leave the experience once you've ordered it. You have to finish it so you can say that you've done it. I'm pretty sure it's in the Bible somewhere,' Dan explained, leaning back in his chair. Although he had eaten a lot, he certainly hadn't outdone Joe or Caspar who were on their second portion each.
As they walked back to the hotel to relax for the morning, Dan regretted not bringing his sunglasses as the bright sun shone, baking the ground and reiterating his headache. He rubbed his forehead vigorously in an effort to ease the pain but it didn't make a difference. He and Phil went out to lay by the pool for the morning as in the afternoon, it was time to prep for all the meet ups and stages that were happening the next day. But a combination of the sun, the children screaming by the pool and what he suspected was a slight cold coming on kept him from enjoying himself. Seriously, a cold, in April?
Eventually, Dan's stomach started to hurt and he was feeling really unwell. He pushed himself up, holding onto the umbrella and shakily walked over to Phil, who was asleep on a sun lounger. On realising this, Dan decided against waking him, figuring he'd be less likely to ask awkward questions as to why Dan was going back up to the room. So he pulled on a t-shirt, grabbed his things and traipsed up to the hotel room miserably.
He was so set on getting back to the room that he wasn't really looking where he was going and bumped into Louise in the lobby.
'Oh, Dan!' she said, irritated as he had knocked her bag out of her hands and the contents was partially spilled out onto the floor. However, she took one look at the boy and her face softened. Effectively, she switched to wise mummy-mode.
'Hey, are you okay Dan?' she said gently. She knew how he felt about being ill.
'Yup, I'm good thanks,' Dan said, straightening up, trying not the wobble coltishly where he was standing. 'I was just going back up to the room to... get my sunglasses,' he said, cringing as he realised that his sunglasses were now on his head and he hoped Louise wouldn't notice.
'Okay, but are they not on your head?' Louise said, waving at the offending glasses.
Dammit.
'Umm no,' Dan said, desperately trying the think up an excuse quickly so he could leave. 'They are actually Phil's glasses. He let me borrow them whilst I went to get mine.' And with that, he gave a slight nod to Louise which sent stabs of pain through his body, and walking swiftly over to the lift.
Whilst in the lift, he sent a quick text to Phil encase he woke up and wondered where he had gone.
To: Phil:)
'gone back 2 room, was getting sunburnt.'
He swiped the key card and entered the room which had the air con on already, thank god. He then collapsed on his bed, holding his stomach and mentally kicking himself for getting ill.
