Part 15

It's the moment you have all been waiting for. My long awaited return has finally come at last!

"They want him to spy on the Chancellor!" Ahsoka shouted through the com.

"Yes, his term has long since expired and the Council is beginning to wonder what his true motive is," Obi-Wan replied.

"The Chancellor has been a great friend and mentor to Anakin. I can't imagine he's happy."

Obi-Wan sighed. "No, he's not, but he's the one that's closest with the man, the only one Palpatine would let get near him."

"I warn you this won't end well Obi-Wan. Stop this before while you still have time, before it goes bad."

"Ahsoka I can't do that. The Council needs to know what the Chancellor is up to. The war is over and he still hasn't stepped down from his position," Obi-Wan countered.

"Fine, but when this goes south don't say I didn't tell you so."

Obi-Wan chuckled. "You two are so alike. I'll keep you updated on the happenings and Anakin and I will return to Onderon when it is time for Padme to give birth. Tell little Ben I say hi."

"I will Master. May the Force Be With You."

"And with you, young Ahsoka."

Ahsoka ended the communication. She groaned and plopped down backwards onto her bed, startling the twins. Ben and Ani began to cry as they could feel their mother's inner turmoil. Ahsoka frantically scooped them up in her arms and tried to calm them. "Shhhhh... shhhhhh... it's okay taziunt. It's okay," Ahsoka cooed. After a few moments of this, the twins started to stop crying and calmed down.

Ahsoka set them back on the bed with her, and they both almost immediately fell asleep. Ahsoka just smiled at them, she couldn't believe they were hers. As a Jedi, she had never even thought about having kids, but now that she had them, she couldn't imagine life without them.

Suddenly there was a noise at the door, and Ahsoka turned to see Padme standing there. "Hey, I heard crying. Is every okay?"

"Yeah they're alright now. They just felt my inner frustration through the force and it upset them."

"What're you frustrated about if I may ask?"

"It's Anakin's new assignment. The Council wants him to spy on the Chancellor and report on his 'dealings' as they call them."

"What! How could they ask him to do that? The Chancellor has been a friend to Anakin since he was a little boy."

"I know that's what I told Obi-Wan, but he said the Chancellor has been in power longer than he should have been, and even with the war ended he hasn't stepped down from power. They're worried he has other plans and ulterior motives."

"Hmmm," Padme mused. Now that she thought about it, the Chancellor had been in power far longer than he should have been. The fact that he still would not step down concerned her even more. "Well it is true he should not still be in power, this isn't a Council matter. This is a matter for the Senate to handle democratically."

"That's what I thought too. I told Obi-Wan that they need to call off this mission before it's too late, before something bad happens."

"I agree Ahsoka. I agree."

Anakin was furiously pacing around his room. The council wanted him to spy on a good friend, a father like figure to him, and for what reason? Because they thought he had ulterior motives? The chancellor had done nothing but help continue the Republic through these difficult times. He had seen them through the entire clone wars to this point.

Anakin thought some more though. The clone wars were over now, and he showed now signs of wanting to step down from his role as chancellor. Still though, that didn't mean he was plotting something. He decided that he would at least go and talk to the chancellor about all of it, see what he was planning to do with stepping down and everything.

Anakin made his way down the halls of the Jedi Temple and into the Senate building. He walked with purpose, stopping for nothing until he reached the Chancellor's office.

Upon entering the older man spun around in his chair grinning. "Anakin to what do I owe the pleasure?"

"I have just come to talk about some events that have transpired with the Jedi Council," Anakin replied.

"And what seems to be troubling you with the Council Anakin?"

"I have to admit, my trust in them has been shaken."

"Why?" Palpatine paused for a moment waiting for an answer from Anakin, but when none was given he continued. "They asked you to do something that made you feel dishonest, didn't they?" Another pause, Anakin looked down and away from the Chancellor. "They asked you to spy on me, didn't they?"

"I don't, uh- I don't know what to say," Anakin sputtered in response.

"It's upsetting to me to see that the council doesn't seem to fully appreciate your talents. Putting you on assignment to spy on the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic instead of doing actual Jedi work, say in Utapau with your former Master?"

"I should be there with him," Anakin replied angrily.

"You should, yes." Palpatine rose from him desk to face Anakin. "Don't you wonder why they wont make you a Jedi Master?"

"I wish I knew," Anakin said dismissively. "More and more I get the feeling I'm being excluded from the council." There was a pause between the two before Anakin continued. "I know there are things about the Force that they're not telling me."

"They don't trust you Anakin. They see your future. They know your power will be too strong to control." The Chancellor began to lead Anakin on a walk out of his office. "You must break through the fog of lies the Jedi have created around you. let me help you to know the subtleties for the Force."

Anakin stopped and gave a confused look. "How do you know the ways of the Force?" He questioned.

"My mentor taught me everything about the Force. Even the nature of the dark side," Palpatine replied sinisterly.

Anakin walked in front of him, stopping his walk forward. "You know the dark side?"

"Anakin, if one is to understand the great mystery, one must study all its aspects, not just the dogmatic narrow view of the Jedi. If you wise to become a complete and wise leader, you must embrace a larger view of the Force." The two began to pace around in a circle, neither breaking eye contact. "Be careful of the Jedi, Anakin. Only though me can you achieve a power greater than any Jedi. Learn to know the dark side of the Force, and it will be able to save your wife from certain death." Palpatine stopped walking and smiled deviously at Anakin.

"What did you say?" Anakin asked.

"Use my knowledge. I beg you," Palpatine pleaded.

Anakin ignited his lightsaber and pointed it to the Chancellor's neck. "You're the Sith Lord."

"I know what's been troubling you. Listen to me. Don't continue to be a pawn of the Jedi Council. Ever since I've known you, you've been searching for a life greater than that of an ordinary Jedi. A life of significance, of conscience." He turned around and began to walk away, stopping only a few feet later with Anakin's lightsaber still pointed at him. "Are you going to kill me?" He asked.

"I would certainly like to," Anakin replied.

"I know you would. I can feel your anger. It gives you focus, makes you stronger."

Anakin retracted his saber. "I'm going to turn you over to the Jedi Council."

"Of course. You should. But you're not sure of their intentions, are you?"

"I will quickly discover the truth of all this."

"You have great wisdom, Anakin. Know the power of the dark side. Power to save Padme."

With that Anakin stormed off to find the members of the council remaining on Coruscant. Making his way to the main council chambers he found no one. He continued his search, looking down every hallway, in every meeting room, war room, and cafeteria. Finally his search brought him to the main hangar bay where he say Master Windu speaking with other Jedi.

"Master Windu, I must talk to you," Anakin stated.

"Skywalks," Mace replied. "we just received word that Obi-Wan has destroyed General Grievous. We're on our way to make sure the Chancellor returns emergency power back to the senate."

"He won't give up his power. I've just learned a terrible truth. I think Chancellor Palpatine is a Sith Lord."

"A Sith Lord?" Mace questioned.

"Yes. The one we've been looking for."

"How do you know this?"

"He knows the ways of the Force. He's been trained to use the dark side."

"Are you sure?" Mace asked tentatively, searching Anakin's feelings for any signs of lying.

"Absolutely," Anakin responded.

"Then our worst fears have been realized. We must move quickly if the Jedi Order is to survive." Mace began to walk quickly further into the hangar, with Anakin in tow.

"Master, the Chancellor is very powerful. You'll need my help if you're going to arrest him."

"For your own good, stay out of this affair," Mace instructed. "I sense a great deal of confusion in you, young Skywalker. There is much fear that clouds your judgement."

"I must go Master," Anakin begged.

"No," Mace said assertively as he stopped walking to face Anakin. "If what you've told me is true, you will have gained my trust. But for now, remain here. Wait in the council chambers until we return." Mace turned and stepped onto a gun ship containing a few other Jedi Council members.

"Yes, Master," Anakin said dejectedly as he turned to walk back up to the council chambers. The whole way back up to the chambers Anakin was torn. They NEEDED him to defeat the Chancellor. He know he was their only chance to defeating him, but they wouldn't let him go. Should he disobey their orders and follow them to help, or should he wait there in the chamber and hope that they were able to defeat him without his help. And what about Padme. Voices were telling him that if they were able to defeat the Chancellor, whether he was killed on the spot, or killed after trial, he would lose all hope of saving Padme.

Anakin felt so many conflicting emotions and heard so many different voices. He closed his eyes and tried to clear his head, and when he did, everything disappeared. He felt calm and at peace for once. No voices, no thoughts, nothing.

Suddenly an image began to form in his mind. He saw the outlines of a blaster begin to form and heard a shot fire as he saw the blue bolt race out of the gun like a sprinter, arm recoiling with the gun. The image disappeared and turned back to black. What he heard next was the screams of a woman and the cries of babies.

Ahsoka! Anakin thought with a gasp. He shot out of his chair, leaving all thoughts of the impending battler in the Chancellors office behind as he raced down the halls to his ship in the hangar bay. I hope I'm not too late, please Ahsoka. Please be okay, he thought as he took off for Onderon.

I hope you guys all enjoyed. It's been a while so if there's any continuity errors please let me know so I can fix them!
