.23 | The Choice

Merida sat in the rec room with her legs curled up close to her chest, her lithe little arms wrapped around her knees as she pressed the side of her face against the top of her knees. She hadn't even changed out of the dress she had been wearing from the banquet, but she had since taken off her heels and instead found solace with her bare feet against the cool leather of the couch she sat on.

Her eyes held fast to the piano, a fonder memory of her and Steve passing through her mind before the reality of what was happening set into her stomach like lead.

"Any updates, JARVIS?" Merida whispered aloud as she looked up at the ceiling of the rec room, awaiting a response from the English speaking AI.

"None at the moment, Ms. Reid,"

Merida sighed.

She felt trapped.

Her insides were quivering, the anxiety her body was experiencing was a direct result of the helplessness she felt in those moments when Avengers had left to save Fran and Ansem without her.

She understood why she couldn't go along, but the it didn't change the fact that she felt as if she were back in a cage, bouncing off the walls internally as her body shook from excess adrenaline.

She couldn't shake the idea of something happening to Fran or Ansem...or the team. All those dark horrid dreams she'd ever had of people dying because of her...running away from Killian only to be caught and punished by watching those she loved died. It was as if those nightmares were becoming a reality. She pushed away a stray tear that fell from her eyes, her fingers rubbing a stain of dark mascara across her eyes and towards her temples.

Merida trusted Steve. She trusted him more than she had anticipated. It was something unexpected; the warmth from his embrace, the blue eyes of justice that penetrated her tainted soul, the benevolence of his smile as he looked at her from across a room.

It scared her how much someone could break through the barriers of her scarred heart, to see past the monster, the mutation...and see her. Not just see her, but truly see her, and somehow weave his way into every fiber of her being.

It unnerved her.

It was almost too good to be true.

A ring from across the room caught her attention. She lifted her head and looked up in the direction of the noise.

It was coming from a sold black phone that hung on the opposite side of the rec room wall.

It continued ringing and she looked around slowly before intuitively unfoldering her legs off the leather couch and moving at a quick pace towards the phone. It was the call she'd been waiting for; it was Steve. She just knew it. She felt a flutter of nerves jump around inside her stomach.

Merida grabbed the phone and placed it next to her ear, anxiety stirred inside her body as she whispered on bated breath,

"Steve?"

There was a long pause on the other end. She found herself whispering his name again with a hint of desperation, "Steve? Is everyone safe?"

"That all depends on your next move,"

Killian.

Goosebumps broke out across her skin, the prickles of panic and paranoia that crept through her mind began to make her heart race from pure terror. She felt the menacing threat through the phone as if Killian were right there in front of her.

Merida froze.

Trauma filled emotions surged through her body and she leaned her body against the wall. Her knees buckled, threatening to take her down to the ground if it hadn't been for the wall supporting her.

"What have you done?" Merida fearfully bit out with a panicked lump forming in her throat.

A rumble of a cackle came through the other end of the line. She could hear a couple voices in the background, but they were muffled so she couldn't make them out.

"What have I done? Hmmm...." He mused on the other end of the line, purposefully keeping her on her toes and in fear of hanging up. Killian laughed again, something mirthless in the sound sent shivers down her arms.

"Well, you see, my little pet," He paused for dramatic effect. "I've currently rigged the warehouse where your little friends are at with a copious amount of explosives," He snickered as if the meaning of life and death didn't meant anything to him; he had no regard for human life at all.

"What?" She felt her stomach drop as she looked around the rec room. It was empty, completely void of the energy and calm that came with the Avengers tower actually being inhabited by people; without them here the rec room was eerily vacant.

"Your caped crusaders are currently at the warehouse attempting to free Fran and that ugly feline you call a friend," He sounded disgusted as he talked about Ansem. She felt the beast within her own veins rear its head in defense, something so fiercely protective that she had to breath carefully to temper the beast within her.

"My finger is on the trigger, Mer-i-da....but if I blow them up is entirely up to you," He dangled that option out there on the line with a knowing smile.

Merida believed him. She knew him to be unhinged, trigger happy and had seen many a time when his trigger finger pulled without hesitation in many a deals. He had a side to him that was unpredictable and this...this was one of those situations. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if he wasn't bluffing and actually blew up the building with everyone in it.

She closed her and felt a few tear slip from her eyes, "What do you want me to do?"

"That's a good girl," He cooed on the other end of the line. "Listen carefully and listen well Merida. One mistake and I blow them all to pieces, got it?" He snarled the last part as if to get his point across.

She twitched from the memory of his visceral fury. Merida nodded, but realized he couldn't see so she murmured an obedient yes as she put her head down and listened carefully as he gave her instructions on what to do.

And when he mentioned the ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent he had on the outside that was tapped into the security system and watching her every move..she believed him.

Killian had an unending amount of contacts and underground operatives that he had been in bed with for many years. He did them favors and they scratched his back in return.

It wasn't surprising that he had someone that could watch her every move. She didn't know how technology worked, but she could only wonder how they were tapped into the system without alerting JARVIS or Tony.

When she hung up she leaned against the wall as she looked up and around the room.

She could have JARVIS contact Steve so easily, she could go downstairs to the first floor where Fury and the others were diligently working with S.H.I.E.L.D. to be assistance to the Avengers, she could have easily called her help, alerted someone...gone down to Bruce's lab where he was working on isolating her blood and understanding more about her mutation.

But she didn't.

The threat of Killian's hand on a deteoner and the fear of someone watching her every which move was real enough for her. She took a deep breath, stilled her nerves and wiped away the stray tears that fell from her eyes as she started towards her room.

Within minutes, she was changed out of the elegant dress that Tony had gifted her and into a dark blue sweatshirt with the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo in white on the front. It had matching white drawstrings and a hoodie attached. She quickly pulled on a pair of dark blue jeans and paired it off with the old sneakers Natasha had found in her size.

She pulled out her short brown hair from the collar of the sweatshirt before lacing her sneakers quietly. Her hands were shaking so bad she had to re-tie them more than once.

Merida made sure to lay out the dress on the bed neatly. She stared down at the dress for a moment before looking around her room, her eyes landing on the drawing that Steve had gifted her.

'For the girl inside of the tiger,'

She walked over to it, her fingers touching the paper briefly. She pulled away before she changed her mind.

It was the only way.

She couldn't risk anyone else.

She couldn't fathom being responsible for everyone in the warehouse getting killed. The thought of losing any of them sent the beast within into a frenzy. She couldn't risk it...couldn't take the risk that he was bluffing.

She knew Killian more than anyone..and this..this was her choice.

Quietly, she rode the elevator down to the bottom floor.

She made sure to seem unassuming, blending in with a group of agents who were carrying briefcases and folders on the bottom floor. They were caught up in their own chatter to notice her. She felt small in their company, but it was better that way. Her palms were slick with sweat.

She felt her heart pounding as if any moment she would get caught or made from someone.

But she never did.

As she walked across the lobby floor, she looked to the right and saw Fury standing with his back to her in a boardroom where other agents sat around monitors.

There was a fluster of movement in the boardroom, a frantic edge to the energy in the room as Fury bent over a table and looked as if he were speaking into a phone that sat in the middle of the table.

I could tell him...

She thought better of it as the frightening idea of someone watching her every move made her think better of going to tell Fury. One wrong move and he'd kill them all.

Merida hastened her steps towards the tower doors and when she opened them she felt the breeze of the evening air hit her face. She immediately drew up the hood from the sweatshirt around her face, shielding herself from the cool air.

She turned to look back up at at the tower one last time, frowning from the pressure in her heart and mind. She looked away quickly, fearing she wouldn't be able to go through with it if she stared long enough.

Her body immediately flushed with goosebumps as she scurried off the mainbase of the tower, down the street and in the direction that Killian had directed her to go.

She kept her head down as the darkness of the night swallowed her up.

---

As she walked, she noted there weren't many cars or taxis where she had been walking and the longer she walked the more desolate the area became. Though she was surrounding by buildings, condos and skyscrapers she started to question the directions that Killian had given her. The beast within stirred with a warning, she couldn't have been in a good part of New York right now.

Her body shivered. She was still frail to normal standards and being malnutritioned for so long wasn't helping matters any. She could feel her body convulsing, trying to keep warm and generate more body heat.

A low rumble behind her caught her attention along with a pair of headlights that shined so bright she had to stop and cover her eyes. It was coming quickly up behind her, the lights growing brighter as it ascended upon her.

It was a dark vehicle, the windows were black as night.

She felt this foreboding feeling in her stomach as the vehicle screeched to a halt next to her.

Merida didn't have much time to react as a single person in a black coat and dark blue jeans hopped out of the passenger back door. She barely could back up, didn't even have time to run as the large grubby handed person grabbed her quickly, yanking her harshly before throwing her into the middle seat of the vehicle.

She heard a yelp in the process and realized it was her muffled scream, a yelp of surprise as she had been so quickly snatched from the sidewalk. Her mind felt like whiplash as it tried to gather its bearings.

The person who grabbed her was already back inside, slamming the door closed as the vehicle skidded out quickly from the spot and starting taking turns down back alleyways much quicker than she would have liked. Her eyes were adjusting to the dimness of the vehicle as the bright lights on the dashboard were her only source light.

Merida was in the middle of the seat. She started to angle her body so she could push up from the seat and actually sit up. She felt a presence to the left of her from the farther side of the large vehicle. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end. She could see through the blackness of the car that there was a silhouette of a person.

The vehicle jolted as it careened down another street, catching her attention towards the front dash for a moment.

She turned back to the left and gasped in fright as Killian leaned forward from the shadows like a demonic entity, his face a hauntingly pale shade of white as he smiled with a maniacs glee.

"Welcome back,"

She cringed, pulling away, but he was quick with his right hand to grab her left wrist. His swiftness was like a viper, precise and threatening. His hand was cold and it made her jolt in surprise. Killian applied pressure as he jerked her back towards him and frowned.

"I was really hoping to blow something up today, but I suppose since you were a good girl and I'm a man of my word..." He paused as if debating if he should go back on his word or not. He looked down at her as she shrunk beneath his harshness, her eyes widened like a doe caught in a hunter's crosshairs.

He was lost in another world for a moment, somewhere else in the dark corners of his mind before returning his insidious attention to Merida as if he remembered she were there. His grip had increased in pressure and she whimpered as it felt as if he might break her wrist.

She could feel the discomfort growing as she tried to wriggle free.

"How did you know I wouldn't be with them?" Merida whispered suddenly as her eyebrows cinched together in confusion.

He barked out a laugh and it made her nearly leap out of her skin.

Just being in his grasp again, such a close proximity of him sent her into a trauma memory; the beast within was stirring, angry but also frozen from the torture-filled memories that had become of them before...should she do anything wrong she knew she'd get a lashing.

It wasn't any surprise she cowered like a terrified animal.

"You? With the heroes of New York?" He smirked as he leaned in, his breath hot next to her ear, "I knew they would never let someone like you fight alongside them. You see now? They don't trust you, Merida, they don't understand you like I do," He cooed out the last part and it sent shivers down her spine.

"You will never be one of them," He ground out with a hint of contempt.

"They do trust me," Merida whispered as she remembered Steve's conflicted eyes the last time she saw him. He had wanted to bring her along, trusted her and her abilities enough to see the good in her...didn't he?

"Really? Then why are you not there with them? Hm? Why have they not trusted you to go save little Franny and Ansem? Hm?" He demanded softly at first but his voice rose, grating with the harshness of his dark obsidian eyes.

"You belong with me, by my side," He raised his free hand and she flinched. He showed no emotion to her fearful reaction and continued with his hand to her hair, petting her as if she truly were a pet.

The mention of Fran and Ansem sent a pain of horrible guilt to the depths of her stomach.

"What do you want? You have me now, Killian..there's no need for anymore violence, please don't hurt them," She felt her bottom lip tremble as he pet her hair, that possessive glint to his eyes was maddening.

"I just wanted a little bit of time.....because the show isn't over yet," He grinned with a diabolical glint to his dark eyes. His eyes rested upon the bracelet that was upon her left wrist.

What did he mean by that?

What else did he have planned?

He rubbed his thumb over the bracelet and narrowed his eyes at it before flicking his glance back to her, even in the darkness of the cabin of the vehicle she could see that predatory shadow that made her hair stand on end.

She never knew what to expect from him so she braced for impact.

Yet nothing ever came.

"Was this a gift?" He asked with a low rumble in his throat.

She swallowed and didn't answer out of fear of him yanking off her.

He jerked her hard and she nodded once, "Ye-yes, from Ton-, I mean, Mr. Stark,"

Killian took a steady breath which was unnerving considering how chaotic his movements were. He released his grip upon her and barely glanced at the bracelet again before tsking to himself, shaking his head as his lips formed a frown.

With the whiteness of his skin he looked like a scary clown.

"I think it's time you remembered who you are and where you belong,"

The vehicle came to a screeching halt.

She was jarred to the side, but only recovered quickly because Killian had gripped the top of her forearm roughly, throwing open the door and hopping out. He pulled her out with him as much care as someone would take with a bag of trash.

She opened her eyes wide as she saw a very old train that was stopped on rickety old tracks. It was abandoned, as were the warehouses that were behind it. They were lined with old dirty windows that looked to be caked with grime and things from the elements of the weather.

She blinked to get her bearings a few times before instantly smelling a four odor of trash, debris and....water.

Beyond the train was a harbor, a bay maybe?

She didn't know where she was, but the water she could smell and it terrified her to no end.

It was a not so big secret that among her captivity she didn't learn to swim and the idea of water of any kind had always made her nervous. Being on the road all the time didn't provide the normal life she would have had if she hadn't been a circus pet..so swimming was not something she had been awarded the luxury of learning.

For some of the shows the trapeze artists would swing in the air and land in a large above ground pool size tub of water. She had always feared for their safety more in the pool of water than she did when they flew around in the air.

Killian had, on numerous occasions, threatened her life by telling her he would sink her to the bottom of the ocean where no one would ever find her. Those were nights that drowning and terror filled her dreams and woke up her panting like she were gasping for air.

He jerked her along with no gentle care. His touch was searing and not in a good way.

It was nothing like Steve's gentle caress.

Killian's grip was so tight she knew she'd have a bruise.

The driver and the man from the back seat stepped out. They were decked in all black and they both had guns dangling from their hip. She instinctively sucked in a breath from anxiety. The man from the backseat rounded the vehicle now carrying a large black duffle bag with him.

Merida didn't recognize either of them, but the driver looked more distinguished in a black suit where as the man in the backseat was dressed more casual.

"I thought you said someone was watching me at the tower.." Merida trembled.

Killian cackled mirthlessly, "And you fell for it," He smiled as if he were extremely proud of himself.

She felt her stomach knot from regret.

How could she be so gullible?

She could shift now and run, but where?

What if he wasn't lying about the detonator with him though? What if he pressed it?

Merida started to feel the telltale sign of panic clawing at her throat.

"Where are the others?" Merida asked as she looked around, curious as to why Blaze, Blair and the other circus members were MIA.

"That," He paused and drew out the word painfully long with glee, "Is none of your concern," He pulled her closer to him and squeezed as if warning her not to speak out of turn again. He dragged her along the way, careless in his steps as he walked over wooden planks, debris and boards and the rickety old railroad tracks.

She could hear the water lapping in the distance.

"Why are we here?" She trembled as they neared the old abandoned warehouse close to the water's edge.

Killian kicked open the warehouse door as the driver in the dark suit flipped on a switch, revealing a very old abandoned structure. There were crates stacked everywhere and it smelled like wheat and rye. She could see old machines in the corner, most of them smelled rusted and wet with decay, but she could still scent that old bread smell.

It was a baking factory, long abandoned as the cobwebs and dust indicated.

Killian's eyes narrowed as he pulled her close, "So many questions, so little time before.." He stopped abruptly and his face grew impassive as if he were about to reveal something he didn't want her to know.

She was confused, none of this made any sense, her mind was spinning.

He smiled dangerously wide, "I have found a way to get to the Ringmaster's Treasure," He was cryptic, but that grating voice did nothing to shake her fears away from being in his clutches.

She blinked, still confused, but trying to grasp why he wanted this so bad...why a boy could go mad over power and darkness and still want some mythical treasure that wasn't even guaranteed to exist.

This close to him she could see the stained blood splatters that lingered on his blue security guard uniform.

The same one he had worn in the video.

She blanched fearfully.

"But first it's time we had a chat, Mer-i-duh," He was no longer smiling and she shrunk in his grasp, "I want you to remember who you belong to, He growled the next part and she froze like a statue from fear as he descended down upon her like a predator to its prey.

---

Steve put a hand to his ear, "Killian isn't here, Fury, I repeat Killian isn't here."

He was panting, his forehead laced with sweat as the last of the men who had been shooting at them moments ago were subdued.

They had easily breached the walls, but inside there was a fire fight that had lasted a little longer than he was hoping for. Natasha and Clint had teamed up together to take out the first wave while Steve and Sam had followed suit to bring up the rear.

Tony had been tasked with disarming the bomb that was around Fran and had thankfully been successful.

"Is the place secure?" Fury responded quickly.

Steve nodded as if Fury were right next to him, "The place is secure. The bomb is disarmed and we have Fran and Ansem with us," He paused and added, "We're going to have to make sure Ansem is handled with care Fury, we can't risk this animal deciding that it doesn't like us,"

He was also special to Merida and if the lion meant something to her then it meant something to Steve.

He would honor and respect that.

There was a pause on the other end of the lion as Fury sighed, "I'm gettin' real tired of all these cats,"

Fran didn't say much, but had given a grateful look Tony's way before tending to Ansem who was pacing and nervous.

She looked worse for wear, but was seemingly unharmed. Her long locks of hair were pushed away from her face as she crouched down next to the lion, Ansem. Her arms were around the large creature as she whispered to it lowly to try and soothe the rattled creature.

"Does that thing have a leash?" Sam asked nervously, which earned a pointed look from Fran.

Tony smirked between Sam and Fran as he opened his helmet to reveal his face.

"Why don't you go over there and ask him?" Tony smirked.

Sam made a face and backed up a few steps, putting more space between him and the lion.

Clint and Natasha subdued and secured the last few men that were stirring and waking up before walking over to the others. Clint frowned and looked around, "I thought the circus weirdo would be here. Where is he?"

"Killian hasn't been here in a long time. What you saw was pre-filmed, it wasn't live." The exhaustion on her face was evident. Steve could also see signs of dehydration as well.

Fran's eyes widened as she looked around to the Avengers, before glancing specifically at Steve.

"Oh god, where is Merida?" She whispered with a dawning realization.

In the same breath, Steve flinched and felt a searing pain in his body that he couldn't explain.

It took the breath right out from him and as he looked up Fran was already in front of him, reaching out and looking him over as something like understanding flickered in her eyes.

She caught a glimpse of Steve's aura and almost instantly she could see the imprint bond.

"What's going on?" Natasha took a worried step forward as she locked eyes with Steve.

"Were you hit?" Clint asked as he stepped up with Natasha.

Fran covered her mouth from shock as she took a step back to give Steve some room.

She had heard of this in books, in passing...but never ever seen it for herself. She didn't know how deep Merida's powers ran, but it was clear that she had bonded with Steve, and had more than likely unintentionally imprinted a piece of herself on none other than Captain America.

And right now..he could feel her pain because of the imprint.

"She's imprinted on you. You-you can feel her, can't you?" Fran asked quickly.

"Imprint?" Sam and Tony asked aloud at the same time.

Natasha just stared at Steve in silent surprise.

Steve looked up, clearly confused with what she was talking about, but the truth was he could feel her and he could feel clearly her own pain and fear as if it were his own.

It was heightened and he flinched again before gritting his teeth and shaking his head,

"She's in trouble,"

"JARVIS, I need to access the bracelet on Merida and get her location," Tony said aloud as he put his helmet back on and pulled up the information from her bracelet, mainly the coordinates of its location.

Steve jerked his head over to Tony with a mild look of shock, "The bracelet is a tracker?"

Tony waved his hand, "Busy over here trying to find your girlfriend, Cap. You'll be thanking me for adding that extra layer of protection in her bracelet,"

"You put a tracker in the bracelet. That's not protection, that's overstepping boundaries," Steve  ground out again through gritted teeth as another wave of pain that wasn't his coursed through his body.

His voice held a cloud of anger to it, the intensity of his gaze holding fast to Tony as he pulled up something in his helmet that no one else could see. There was a look of white hot fury that Steve gave to Tony as an enormous amount of tension pulsated through Steve and into the room.

Tony's helmet popped back up and he looked at everyone with no apology in his eyes.

"She's next to the Hudson River. I have her location and I'm sending it to you all now," Tony sent the location to everyone before pinging Fury, "Fury, we got a problem. Merida isn't in the tower. She left and she'd near the Hudson. We think Killian is with her,"

Fury's voice rose on the other end of the line, "There's no way she left the tower unnoticed,"

Sam made a face, "Looks like the tower needs an upgrade in security,"

Natasha made a face.

"How the heck did she get over to the Hudson? She was supposed to be at the tower," Clint looked at everyone, his bow and quiver in his hands as they were all ready to roll out.

Steve shook his head, "I don't know, but we have to find her. Now,"

"I'll probably get there first so if you want a ride speak now or forever hold your peace," Tony remarked as his helmet covered his face again.

"We'll meet you there," Natasha added reassuringly.

Steve's jaw grew taut, but he swallowed his pride and quickly put his shield back into place upon his back, "Let's go,"

He was rattled more than he would like to admit, feeling her pain in his own body, her fear...Steve had never experienced anything like it. And he certainly had no idea what an imprint was that Fran had mentioned.

All he knew was that she was in trouble...and there was a fierceness to his nerves that kept him on edge, wanting so desperately to get to her. But he kept it all hidden, the most rattled anyone could tell he was was from his taut jaw and his thin lips that didn't have a trace of that good 'ole boy smile most were used to.

Tony was lightning quick as he grabbed Steve from underneath both of his arms and flew off to the location.

"Sam, you stay with Fran and the lion. S.H.I.E.L.D. is sending a caravan to come get you all," Clint ordered as he started to head out with Natasha right by his side towards the quinjet that was parked outside.

"What? Why do I gotta' stay with the lion?" Sam called out in exasperation.

Fran looked at Sam and she raised a brow, "His name is Ansem,"

The lion grunted and plopped down next to Fran.

Fran looked over at Sam and frowned. Despite her strong bones and magical sight, she was still human, and the thought of Merida in the clutches of Killian again made her stomach flip.

"They have to get her,"

Sam looked back at Fran with reassurance, "I can tell you right now that Cap' will do anything to get her back safe,"

There was something in Sam's gaze that settled her nerves ever so slightly, but the fear of not knowing still held her captive. She sighed shakily and sat down next to Ansem, hoping and praying that the man who wore the colors of freedom would come to Merida's aid.

Author's Note:

I'm soooo sorry this has not been updated in a couple months. LIfe happened.

But we are back!!!!

We have so much more to go with this story and trust me when I say...it's not over. We still have a whole third act and finale to go with it. Which, I mean, it's a good thing because that means more Steve and Merida!!!

WHOO!!

Okay, so I won't lie...I struggled a bit with the part of how to get Merida out of the building and to be honest I kind of thought she's not a captive soooo she could have free roam of the building anyways and not to mention with the threat of Killian blowing up Fran and Ansem and the others...she was put in such a position that she felt she HAD to comply with Killian.

He's unpredictable...so it's safe to say that she believed him and feared for her friends and the Avengers. She couldn't take that chance so she left.

And the fact that Tony put a tracker in her bracelet...*le sigh* I see this as both Tony being Tony and also Tony being OVERLY protective. I know what he was doing was done with good intentions, but Steve has a point that he overstepped boundaries.

HOWEVER, it will lead them to Merida sooooo I mean thank goodness for the tracker?!? LOL :p

AND we get that imprint thing mentioned!!! Fran knew exactly what was going on and given her sight and vision and abilities..she saw the imprint bond and the fact that Steve could feel her pain. T.T We don't know what she's going through so I'm just all kinds of in my feels right now.

Also, the interaction between Sam and Tony about Ansem had me cackling. Sam can be such a scaredy cat sometimes..LOL I had to add in some humor in there because the chapter was a WEE bit heavy and dark and tension-filled. :)

I hope everyone enjoyed this chapter!! Let me know in the comments and as always if you're enjoying thumbs up the chapter. I will be following up with another chapter before the new year and will be back to writing this story more consistently as we head into 2022.

I want to thank everyone for being here with me and this story for all this time.

We aren't finished yet...there is more to come as the story evolves! :)
