83 | my favorite journal spreads from 2023

Lol so I meant to publish this a WHILE ago but never got around to actually writing the content of the chapter. As I previously mentioned, I have a "chaos journal" where I include a bunch of random stuff — doodles, aesthetics, monthly favorites, show/movie reviews, album spreads, brain dumps, concerts, and more. Anything I want, really!

I experimented more with the scrapbook journaling concept last year and I loved how some of these spreads turned out. I wanted to share some of my favorites!

SINGLE PAGES:

1. I'm not the best at drawing, but sometimes I like to copy some doodles I see online. This is the first doodle page in that journal. I like having specific pages to doodle on because I can experiment and fill up the page with cute stuff :)

2. For a good part of the year, I made these habit trackers because I wanted to hold myself accountable for certain tasks. I suck at taking my vitamins, and as you can see, still failed to take them daily even with the tracker. But I did read a LOT! I generally like how this page turned out with the cute title and colors.

3. A colored pencil sketch thing I did

4. My October favorites page — featuring cute ghosts and autumn-themed stickers! I do these at the end of every month, and it's fun to look back on the things I enjoyed during that time. For this year, though, I'm changing these to a "monthly recap" spread instead so I can keep track of the things I did most, all the books I read/things I watched/events etc.

TWO-PAGE SPREADS:

1. I decided to start making spreads for my favorite albums as well as ones that are released by artists I enjoy. This is a spread for Harry Styles's 2019 album, Fine Line, which is my favorite from his three. I love how this turned out— I think it captures the overall feel of the album well!

2. My review for Daisy Jones and The Six. I had SO much fun making this and picking out the colors for the accent papers and markers. I painstakingly re-created the band's logo, which thankfully ended up looking good. I was SWEATING.

3. Malcolm in the Middle has been one of my favorite sitcoms since I was little (understandable, since it was super popular back then as it was still airing), and I recently decided to rewatch it all the way through. It truly changed the game for modern sitcoms and is FANTASTIC, not to mention hilarious. I had a lot of fun with the early 2000s vibes for this spread. I'm still making my way through season 2 (I have a serious problem with remembering to watch stuff) so I'll make another one for that, I think. But there are also 7 seasons, so idk if I should do a spread for each one or not.... that's a decision I'll make later.

P.S.: This show influenced the episode of Wandavision that was based in the 2000s! If you watch the theme song for MITM and then the opening credits for that episode, the inspiration is obvious <3 This show was so good but is often forgotten in the realm of sitcoms.

4. A spread for All Time Low's 2011 album, Dirty Work. I wish the words weren't so crammed, but alas, that's what happens when you don't sketch out the plan with pencil first. But I still like it so here it is.

1. My spread for The Eras Tour concert! I actually made this in September despite the concert being in June because I needed that long to process it. I've blocked out identifying info but feel free to read the stuff I wrote if you want. I found the little polaroid pictures on Pinterest and KNEW I had to include them.

2. Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS album spread. I love purple so this one was so much fun to make! Although I did learn that I shouldn't use Sharpie on the journal paper itself because it bled straight through and ruined a spread for Niall Horan's The Show on the other side.... oops :(

3. BARBIE MOVIE SPREAD!!! BARBIE MOVIE SPREAD!!! Featuring another instance of me painstakingly copying a logo. This time I did it on a separate page and then cut it out + pasted it on there. I loved making this one because the pink theme was so FUN!

4. HOZIER SPREAD!!! I am highkey obsessed with how this looks. I ripped off pieces of old paper bags (#recycling) and used a lot of my earthy stickers. Plus I rubbed ink on there to make it look like dirt. The album is inspired by Dante's Inferno, so I included elements of that in there (quotes, some of the deadly sins). Fantastic album. Hozier never misses.

1. If you know me, you know that Speak Now is MY Taylor album. I cried when Taylor's version dropped. I also ordered a shirt, so I glued in some of the cute confetti that came with it (that's what all the purple hearts are!). I started sweating when I was writing out the tracklist because I was running out of space, but thank GOD, they all fit.

2. MORE CONFETTI. I ordered a vinyl this time and received more cute confetti, so here it is, in the 1989 (TV) spread. It looks a bit cluttered, but still cool.

3. TBOSAS SPREAD!! I had to include a pic of my girl Rachel because DUH. Notice the crown I doodled by her head because Lucy Gray is a QUEEN. Also I lowkey messed up the lyrics but pretend I didn't, thanks. Apparently there's no "who" in there and I've been singing it wrong since I first read Mockingjay in 2011. It's fine.

4. Combination of my November favorites spread and a fall rewind, which kinda go together?? I made them both at the same time so I used a lot of the same materials. They look so cozy and I love it! Autumn is my favorite time of year and I love creating aesthetics that reflect it.

Thank you guys for reading this nonsense about my journal LMAO. If you are interested, I'll probably make another chapter for my favorite spreads from 2024. And even if you're not, I'll make it anyway, because this book is about self-indulgence first.

ADIOS.
