Scene From a Picture - Part One

Gavin had been too late. It had been just a few seconds - so close that he could have made a difference. But it wasn't meant to be.

And now he was standing at the edge of this huge rock formation, overlooking the land that the sun was shining on in a bright warm orange, giving it an atmosphere of peace and tranquility that was just inappropriate for the moment. Everything he could see from this point - the land, the sea, the fields in which the farmers grew their crops, and the city of Dunenhall in the distance - everything bathed in the orange glow of the afternoon sun, unaware of the tragedy that had just happened.

He cautiously looked straight down. One inch before his feet the rock ended and the drop began. It went down hundreds of feet, a drop that no living being of any species he knew was able to survive. He looked down and knew perfectly well that she hadn't been able to. She was lying across the rough and rocky ground far below him. Her body was scattered, blood was flowing all around it. The end of the fall had crushed her like she had been made of glass. Whatever spark of life had been in her, it had left.

Why had she jumped? When he saw her standing at this edge, she seemed so young, so full of life.  She even looked pretty from afar, pretty enough for him to think about asking her to join him at a tavern for a mug of wine. It was so heartbreakingly senseless, such a loss of life. And he wondered: Had he only been a few seconds faster, had he spoken up to her before she had jumped - could he have saved her?

He shook his head. One thing was certain: For whatever reason she had taken her own life, it couldn't have been worth it...
