Newt

A tall man, in a grey suit suddenly steps through the door, his footsteps seem silent. He locks eyes with Doctor Paige, as he kneels beside her; cupping his hand to the side of his mouth, I can hear echoes of his harsh whispers to Doctor Paige.
Doctor Paige's blank face washes over to an alarmed reaction, her eyes widen. Collecting herself together, remaining calm, still doesn't cover the fact that she's just received shocking news.
"Newt." She gulps, standing up and smoothing down the pleats in her skirt.
"Please come with me." Doctor Paige doesn't look at me, instead shamefully looks at the floor; before the man in the suit comes over to me and begins to unclasp my hands from the cuffs.
"What's going on?" I demand, jerking away from the man as he pushes my wrist out of the cuff.
"Your friend, Thomas." The man mutters, quiet enough so Doctor Paige can't hear his hint.
"He's okay? Isn't he? Where is he?" I stutter, feeling fainter with each breath.
"Newt. Please." Doctor Paige snaps, pressing her palm to her forehead, looking more and more distressed.
A couple of minutes of silence dragged by, I could almost her Doctor Paige's brain whirring, scrapping up a plan of action.
"Right," she smiles desperately, looking me in the eyes. "Newt, would you please come with me. I need your help." Doctor Paige states, despite the other guy's disapproving stutters behind me.
Doctor Paige strides out the door calmly, the man prompts me to swiftly follow her lead out the room.
My hopes of snatching some clues to where these isolation cells are located are dismissed as outside the previous room is just a long white corridor.
I follow Doctor Paige, with the man in the suit in tow and two guards uncomfortably shoulder to shoulder with me. It's not like I'm going to bloody run away again.
Doctor Paige sharply turns to face a grey steel door, after typing in the pin code, she leads me inside what looks like a dark rectangular room.
Inside there's a team of several Doctors, bustling around screens and beeping machines at the back of the room.
However on the opposite wall is a small square window, it looks too familiar, the shape, the size.
I trace my hand carefully over the edges of the window, feeling like the whole world is chaotically spinning around me. I'm losing grip of everything I used to control.
I can't lose him.
"Newt? Newt?" Doctor Paige calls from the group of Doctors by the machines.
Yet her voice is drowned out by a sudden scream.
A kind of scream that runs an icy discomfort through your spine.
I jerk my head towards the direction of the sound, completely focused on nothing else.
Crouching closer to window, I squint to gather the scene before me.
"Newt! No! Come over here!" Doctor Paige yells.
"Get him away from that window! He can't see it yet!".
It's too late.
My eyes have already assessed the scene through the window.
A boy is shaking in the far corner of the white cell on the other side of the window. His cheeks are pale and his under-eyes purple, his eyes glare bright in distress under the harsh lighting.
Wrapping his arms around his tucked-in knees, he screams again, furiously burrowing his head into his knees.
Thomas.
He's barely recognisable.
But that's my Tommy.
"Tommy!" I scream back, pounding my fist on the window.
Tears sting my eyes to see him in this kind of state, "Thomas! Please!" I yell, my voice raw with tears.
Doctors begin to drag me away, yet I fight back as a hard as I can, still calling his name.
"No! Thomas! It's okay! It's me!" I scream, kicking my legs furiously in protest.
My heart beat begins to slow for a moment, as Thomas stops screaming.
However like a slash to the heart, the screams start again, much clearer this time.
The doctors are now less focused on me and more observing Thomas to make sure he's okay.
"No! Please Teresa!" He screams from the other cell.
"Please don't hurt him!"
"He's all I have!"
"Stop it! Stop it!"
"Kill me instead!"
He's having a severe hallucinogenic episode, my poor Tommy.
"Let me in there, please!" I beg Doctor Paige, wiping the tears my cheeks.
"I can help him!" I protest.
Before she can reply, Thomas shrieks again, the tears falling from his cheeks heavier than ever.
His raw voice screams, "Teresa, no! Don't hurt him! Please!".
"Don't kill him!"
Doctor Paige presses her lips together in thought, she knew she couldn't not do anything.
"Go. Someone take Newt to Thomas, be careful." She states quietly, resting her chin on her palm.
I jump to attention, finally prying myself from the window. I follow a doctor to the next door on the white corridor, which opens to a tiny room, then with a door to the actual cell.
He opens it slowly, the locks unheard under the sound of screams.
"Be careful, kid. I'll stay here.". He wishes a few words of warning before letting me through.
When I step through, Thomas is still hunched in the corner, a trembling mess.
"Teresa! Stop! No!" He screams louder than ever.
I cautiously take steps closer to him, staying silent.
"No! Why! Please!" He hiccups through the stream of tears.
With a final raw scream, "You killed him. You killed my only hope." Thomas states, eerily calmer.
He pounds his fists on the ground, still in hysterics.
I can't take it.
I can't watch this.
Suddenly in a single moment I throw myself at Thomas, wrapping my arms and legs around him, holding him close to me.
Never letting him go.
"Tommy, Tommy." I whisper, stroking his hair.
"It's me, Newt. I'm okay. Look, please." I say soothingly, desperate to bring him back.
He gulps, trying to control his tears. I can feel his heartbeat slowing, with relief.
" I'm okay, I'm alive, Tommy." I repeat, clutching him against me.
He finally looks up at me, his eyes puffy and red.
"Please don't leave me Newt. Please don't go."
