A Fortunate Destiny

Kihyun felt his shoes sink deeper into the grass of the school courtyard, the folded piece of paper clenched in his hand, bending to its form. He stood there feeling frozen, all except his knees that wobbled like they were gonna give out from under him at any second. He bit his lip slightly, staring ahead.

What was the cause of all his anxiety? Well that would be what he was actually looking at, or rather who. It was Son Hyunwoo, the handsome and stoic upperclassmen that had caught the young Kihyun's eye the very first day of his freshman year. Maybe it was crazy to fall in love with someone you've basically never met, and sure he'd never had a real full conversation with him, other than when they were in a peer mentoring group talking about school safety, but he couldn't help but feel a connection. Besides, their mutual friend Jooheon talked about him a lot, so he knew plenty about him, and the more he knew the more he fell.

Still he couldn't bring himself to talk to the male. So he decided, to write a letter, a cheesy love confession letter straight out of a teenage girl's middle school journal, but he figured maybe it was his last chance. Still he stood there frozen, begging his feet to move. How hard could it be, he finally caught him alone reading in the court yard. He'd just have to walk up and hand him a damn slip of paper. A slip of paper with his heart and soul written on it... easy right? Wrong.

He suddenly widened his eyes his heart sinking, as someone did approach the older male, and it wasn't him. It was a girl. Handing the senior a box of chocolates before bowing to hide her blushing cheeks. She is pretty, probably totally his type. Kihyun thought. She'd confessed, and Shownu hadn't replied for a while but then he nodded.

Kihyun quickly turned away, not bearing to watch any longer. He'd waited too long... He squeezed his eyes shut asking himself how he could be so stupid before his feet finally left the ground. He was running, wind whirling past him and tears prickling at the corners of his eyes.

He'd waited too long...

Kihyun suddenly jolted awake as the bus he was in hit a bump. He looked out the window, relieved he hadn't slept through his stop, and then adjusted the few shopping bags in his lap, and folding the collar of his coat back into place.

He couldn't help but give a small laugh at himself, dreaming of that memory, from so long ago. How could he have been so dramatic, acting like it was the end of the world... even crying over it? Pathetic.

Sure, he still thought about his senior a lot, and yes, he's never felt the same way about anyone else... but hey, if growing up taught him anything it was that you can't always get what you want, and you can't waste your time dreaming about things that won't come true...

He sighed at how bitter he sounded. He missed dreaming, he missed hopping, and at times... he missed Hyunwoo. But he had a life now, and Hyunwoo probably did too. Married maybe, with kids, who knows?

Kihyun suddenly jolted up realizing he needed to get up. He signaled the driver. "Um excuse me I need to get off here!" The bus stopped and he quickly stumbled down the stairs, onto the pavement. He checked his phone, and then made his way toward the venue. Jooheon's gonna kill me if I'm late. He thought, quickly redirecting, looking at his phone again. He then froze for a moment, looking toward a Chinese restaurant that was slowly filling with patrons. Was that...? He thought before shaking his head. No Kihyun, stupid! You dream of him once and now you're seeing him everywhere? People are going to think you've gone mad. He turned forward again, heading toward his destination.

"Text me when you get home, yeah!" Jooheon called after him as he left the venue for the promotion of the younger's mixtape.

"Yeah yeah, don't worry, I'm a grown man I'll be fine!" Kihyun called back.

"Hm, alright, I'll see you later then!" Jooheon waved goodbye.

"See you!" Kihyun replied before fully stepping outside and pulling his coat closer around him as he felt the immediate drop in temperature. He blew warm air into his hands before slowly making his way toward the bus station. It was a quiet and peaceful night, only a few people passing by, or leaving restaurants. He went to pull his phone out of his pocket and his keys ended up coming with it falling to the pavement. He leaned down to pick them up, but before he could someone, who must have been walking from the other direction, picked them up for him, gently placing them in his hand.

"Oh, thank you-" he looked up at the person and froze. No way... I really must be seeing things. He shot up in panic, looking at the male with wide eyes.

The other simply responded with a strange look, slowly rising as well to face him.

"H-Hyunwoo? S-son Hynnwoo?" He almost felt like he was sent flying back to his high school days, hardly able to speak a word.

The older male looked at him a moment before looking shocked, like he'd realized something. "Kihyun. Yoo Kihyun, right?"

"Y-you remember me?" Kihyun asked almost in disbelief.

"Of course I remember you, we went to high school together right?" Hyunwoo asked.

"Well...Yeah, but..." He trialed off looking at the male's face. He was just as handsome, if not more so. "Well anyway, how have you been?"

"Fine, and you?" Shownu asked seeming genuinely curious, and smiling a bit.

"Good." Kihyun answered. "Are you still um... seeing that girl?"

"Girl?" Shownu asked.

"The one you went with. Senior year." Kihyun elaborated.

The taller seem to think a moment. "Solar? No, that ended forever ago. She was confused, but found out she liked girls, her and her girlfriend are happy together now."

"Oh that's great." Kihyun nodded semi-awkwardly. He looked at the older male, noticing him smiling at him. His hear started beating, and his mind was suddenly racing. Why is he looking at me like that?

"Sorry." The other suddenly apologized, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "It's just, I got Chinese food earlier and my fortune... well here just read it." He handed him a small slip of paper.

Kihyun took it watching him slowly before unfolding it and reading the small printed text.

[someone from your past will come to steal your heart]

Kihyun read it again to be sure he wasn't hallucinating before looking back up to his senior. Who was now slightly shuffling awkwardly on the pavement. "I don't usually believe stuff like that honestly... but uh... Then I ran into you, so it couldn't be a coincidence, right?" He then remained silent for a moment before clearing his throat. "So, do you maybe want to get coffee with me tomorrow morning?"

"Uh... Yeah! Yes, definitely- I mean... I would love too." Kihyun stumbled over his words again.

The response made the older smile again and he gently place a hand on top of the younger's head, letting the soft strands of hair push up through his fingers. "Cool, don't skip out on me okay?"

Kihyun felt his cheeks heat up at the contact feeling like his dreams were coming back simply at the feeling of Hyungwoo's fingertips. "I won't." He chuckled. "After-all I've waited this long."

Hey guys, how are you all holding up? How's back to school treating you? Mine's still online, thank god, but still very stressful. Hope you guys are doing better. Thought we were in the need of some light fluff though, so there you go. Idk I kinda like leaving it this way, but let me know if you want a part 2. Vote and comment, bye!
