Chapter 2: Lay With Me
It didn't take long for both Peter and Gwen to fall into a deep sleep after the long and eventful day they'd had. He was laid flat on his back, with his arm around her as she leaned into his side with her head resting softly on his chest.
Fighting off the Green Goblin, he was finally gaining the upper hand when the ruthless enemy that had once been his friend took him by surprise and moved faster than he could think.
Gwen was on the edge of one of the cogs that worked the clock tower, and during all the commotion, she had fallen backwards and was falling. Watching in horror, Spider-man acted fast, shooting a web that quickly attached itself to her. Though he soon realised that it would not be enough to stop her from hitting the ground and seeing that Harry had disappeared, he leapt off the platform and made a dive to try and catch her.
Just as she was about to hit the ground, the web abruptly stopped her fall, though despite not falling all the way, her neck had snapped as a result of the sudden yank. Having got there just in time to unhook her from the web, he took off his mask and examined her closely...
"Gwen... No!" He cried.
"PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME!!" Peter yelled in a broken cry.
Gwen's eyes flew open, startled by the sudden sound. She looked down at Peter, who was still deeply asleep, and acted fast. Shuffling around so that she could reach out to him properly, she cupped his face in the palms of her hands.
"Peter... Peter, wake up!"
"I can't live without you... PLEASE STAY WITH ME!" He yelled again in his sleep.
"Peter! Wake up!" She repeated, louder this time.
When he still showed no signs of waking up, she moved her hands from his face to his shoulder and gently began to shake him. His body was laced with sweat due to the nightmare, which she ignored as she continued to try to wake him. With no luck, her ideas were wearing thin when she had another thought. Placing her hands back where they originally were, she leaned over his chest and pressed her lips firmly against his. A few seconds passed and his racing heart began to slow then finally his eyes opened wide.
Feeling Gwen's lips on his own, he quickly realised that what he had just witnessed was only a dream of his worst fear and relief flooded through him. As his eyes narrowed again, he closed them and returned the kiss before breaking it off to hold her close in a hug. He was grateful to be able to feel her there with him once again.
Resting his head on her shoulder, he buried his face in her neck as his body began to tremble just as it had back in the clock tower. He sobbed loudly, unable to control himself.
"I'm so sorry..." He choked into her ear.
"Peter, you didn't do anything wrong. You saved my life. Don't be sorry, it's okay... I'm right here." She soothed.
Not knowing exactly how to comfort him, she returned the embrace and rubbed his back slowly with her hands, hoping that it would ease his anxiety.
"I nearly lost you..." He whimpered.
"But you didn't, and you won't ever." She assured him.
He swallowed hard before taking a deep breath to recompose himself. Once he was calm enough, he pulled back from the hug and stared into her beautiful cerulean blue eyes; his own tear stricken face reflected in her pupils. Then he smiled weakly, earning a sympathetic smile from Gwen.
"I have to tell you something..." He admitted sheepishly.
"Okay... Something bad or...?" She questioned, trailing off to allow him to finish.
"Eh... Not bad, but I don't know if you would cast it as a good thing either."
"Come on, spill it."
"It's about how I saved your life last night... It wasn't exactly the web or any of my other powers."
"Then what was it?"
"My venom. I used one of the syringes at Oscorp to extract some of my blood and inject it into your system." He stated.
"Your venom?... Have you ever done that with anyone before?" She questioned.
"No, never. So I don't know how it might affect you, but I felt like I should tell you now just in case you start to experience any weird changes." He answered truthfully.
Not knowing what to say, Gwen fell silent for a moment. She was grateful that Peter had saved her life and she loved him dearly, but it was likely that the venom would change her whole life.
"Are you mad?... It's okay, I understand if you are." He prompted.
"No. I'm not mad Peter, you saved my life and I could never be mad at you for that. It's just that the venom could change my life... But that isn't a bad thing, I mean I can learn to adjust and what's more is that I have you by my side so I know that no matter what, we can face all these things together." She explained, biting her lip and making eye contact again in anticipation of his answer.
"Of course. I'm not going anywhere. Not now, not ever." He confirmed, brushing a loose strand of hair out of her face.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
"Now take a shower... You stink." She teased playfully.
"Oh I do, huh? Alright, little miss perfect... Do you not sweat then?" He quipped.
"Haha.. Don't be silly, everyone sweats... But the difference is that the rest of us don't go running around in a spandex costume to fight crime." She giggled.
"Touché."
His laugh echoing in the room, he stood up from the bed and stripped off his t-shirt and then his pyjama bottoms too.
"Woah... Hold up! What are you doing?"
"Taking a shower." He answered.
"Uh-huh... And you're just randomly undressing here, in the middle of my bedroom?" She questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"Oh! Right! Sorry. It's what I usually do at home and I kind of forgot and... Yeah, I'm gonna go to the bathroom." He rambled and ran vastly from the bedroom into the bathroom, leaving her in a fit of laughter.
After thirty minutes give or take, he emerged from the bathroom and back in the bedroom with a maroon coloured towel wrapped around his midsection.
"I forgot that I didn't have any clothes with me." He admitted, his cheeks flushing pink with embarrassment.
"Lucky for you it just so happens that those clothes that you had on aren't the only ones that you left here." She informed him, with a playful glint in her eyes.
Getting off the bed, she headed over to a set of drawers and opened the top one, pulling out a deep blue t-shirt with the picture of a car on it and a pair of light grey joggers along with a pair of black briefs. With a smirk, she handed the clothes over to him.
"I have a whole drawer dedicated to storing the clothes that you tend to leave here when you're in a rush." She explained as briefly gave her a confused look.
"Right. Thank you. I'm gonna go put these on." He told her and went back to the bathroom, feeling awkward.
A moment later he reappeared in the bedroom, this time fully dressed and Gwen couldn't help but laugh at how unorganised he could be sometimes. It was something that she thought was cute about Peter.
"What's so funny?" He asked, admiring the smile that was plastered on her face as she laughed.
"You. You're a hot mess." She told him.
"A hot mess? How?" He questioned, his grin widening.
"Well because you're so unorganised yet you're always finding your way somehow... And plus, you're hot."
"A hot mess, indeed." He agreed, joining her on the bed.
Laying back down together, both on their sides, resting their heads on their pillows and looking into each other's eyes, Peter's smile did not fade. His hand rested around her waist as he pulled her close, not liking the distance between them at all, then he closed his eyes once more and inhaled her scent.
"I would lay like this forever with you, if I could." He murmured sleepily.
"Me too, Peter. Me too." She replied with a yawn.
Finally, at 4am in the morning, the two of them fell into a deep sleep and this time without the horrific night terrors that had disrupted them earlier. As long as Peter could feel her next to him, he remained in a pleasant sleep state, not bothered by a single image.
