Ryoma stepped outside into the bright sunlight. It was a beautiful summer day, and all of the classes were preparing to greet the freshman class.

He sat under a tree in the courtyard. He looked over and saw the freshman class was already there. There was a boy practicing kickflips on a skateboard, a boy playing fetch with a golden retriever, and a girl fixing her hair in a handheld mirror. This class seemed interesting.

"Ryoma?" a familiar voice said, "Can Gonta sit with you?"

Ryoma looked up to see his favorite formally-dressed classmate, Gonta Gokuhara. Ryoma smiled warmly toward the giant of a man and said, "Sure, buddy."

Ryoma scooched over to make room for Gonta. Gonta sat down next to Ryoma and smiled at him.

"Oh!" Gonta said as he looked down. "It's a Diplopoda!"

Gonta picked it up and began telling Ryoma all about the insect.

"Oh my goodness!" came a voice from a few feet away, "Is that a centipede?"

It was a fair-skinned girl with messy blonde hair that stuck up a bit at the top, a blue tank top and periwinkle skirt, and a teal bow in her hair. She had golden earrings, purple eyes, and a dorky little smile plastered on her face. On her feet, she wore a pair of mismatched socks: a cyan thigh-high sock covered in sea-green stars on her left leg, and a knee-length striped sock with the same colors on her right. Her sneakers were standard blue Converse, except they had little white wings pasted on the sides.

She ran over to Gonta's hand, cooing at the little bug. "Hi there, little guy!" The centipede raised its head up at the girl.

"He says hi!" Gonta said. The girl's eyes lit up. "You can understand him?" she asked.

"Well you two seem to be fast friends." Ryoma commented.

"Oh! Hello there! I didn't notice you. You're just so..." The girl said

"Small? Yeah, I get that a lot." Ryoma laughed.

"Ah! I meant no offense!" She explained rapidly.

"Heh. None taken, honest." Ryoma once again laughed.

"Oh! Well uh... Hi! My name is Kaida Nishimura. I'm sorry for just running over and interrupting your time together."

"Ryoma Hoshi, and you're fine. In fact, you were actually pretty cute, running over here like that. Reminds me of big guy over here." Ryoma said, motioning over to Gonta.

"Hello! Gonta's name is Gonta! Gonta Gokuhara! It's great to find another bug-lover in the new class!" Gonta said eagerly.

"Well, it is very nice to meet you both, Gonta, Ryoma, but I hear my boyfriend calling for me! I'll see you during introductions!" Kaida said, turning around and waving.

"Wait." Ryoma said, "Before you go," he pulled his pack of candy cigarettes out of his jacket, "take one."

"Oh no, I don't smoke..." Kaida said, waving her hands in front of her.

"Don't worry, they're not real." Ryoma explained.

Kaida took one from the pack and put it in her mouth. "Mmmm!" She said, her eyes lighting up.
"It tastes like oranges!"

"Okay, I have to go now, see you guys!" Kaida said running into the arms of a dark-skinned boy clad in a red hoodie and backwards baseball cap. They nuzzled and pecked each other on the lips before weaving their fingers together and walking off.
