I walk into the Empire State Building, fear in my bones. My friend, Will, is confident.
"I know I can fly!" He boasts. He punches my arm lightly.
"JJ, you'll be fine." I give a weak smile in response and go to the man behind the desk. He seems to sense my emotions, and waves me up. If you're testing, then you can jump off of anywhere for free. Will grabs my arms and pulls me into the elevator. I stay silent. Will, however, is babbling about what he'll do when realizes he can fly. I half-listen, and think about the possibilities.
Falling to your death.
That was really the only one that was needed to be said. We finally get to the top, and I'm surprised. The top is deserted, usually it's filled with jumpers. I double check the weather. Will wanted to chose a cold day. Will stands on the tiny little ledge, flailing his arms. I'm glad he's going first. He would probably push me if I went first. He makes a big intro about himself, and I laugh half-heartedly. Finally, he jumps. He made me promise to go, no matter what, so I don't look down. If he died-
Don't say that. He's fine. I reassured myself. I climb up onto the ledge. The wind is cold, and strong, and is whistling in my ears. I look down, and see a clump of people.
He died.
I let out a wail. My best friend, gone. If I can't fly, I don't care. If I die, at least I'll be with Will, and not alone. I lean forward, and fall.
The wind is roaring in my ears. I'm still facing up, looking at the gloomy gray sky. I smile, and expect to hit the sidewalk, but hear gasps instead. I turn my head, and see that I'm at least eight feet off the ground. I can fly. I'm not too thrilled about it, of course, but still. It's pretty cool. I think up, and I rocket forward. I continue until I'm at the top again. And finally, I say, before I fall,
"This is for you, Will." And soar off
