Chapter 58 - Uncaged
Creeping through the warehouse, Gidget was surprised by how there was no one inside. She figured that there would at least be someone guarding but the abandoned building was devoid of all canine life. Reaching the basement though, the fluffy white Pomeranian discovered that there was still one animal inside. She gasped quietly at what she saw before her.
Locked up inside a cage with chains all over his body, Tiberius sat with his bloody back facing the door. His right eye was swollen and he was badly beaten up. His ribs showed underneath his matted feathers. There was duct tape around his beak so he couldn't cry for help. Head hanging low, the old hawk didn't react as Gidget unlocked the door and entered the cage.
Quietly making her towards Tiberius's bruised face, Gidget sat down in front of the old hawk. He still made no reaction to her presence, his eyes shut. "What've they done to you?" the Pomeranian whimpered as she ever so carefully pulled off the duct tape on his beak. Hearing Gidget's voice, Tiberius opened his good eye. The sad look he gave her broke her heart. Trying not to cry, she hugged him.
"What are you doing here?" Tiberius rasped, his voice sore from lack of use. Careful not to accidentally hurt him as she gently stroked his injured back, Gidget looked him in the eye. "I couldn't leave the one I love the most alone. And I never will," she promised. Confused, the old hawk opened his mouth to say something. Fast as lightning, Gidget snatched the opportunity and kissed him.
After two minutes, the pair slowly broke apart and gazed into each other's eyes. A smile spread across Gidget's face as she stood and started pulling the chains off of Tiberius. When she finished, she padded back over to his head. "Let's get you of here," she whispered, helping the hawk to his feet. That's when she saw the broken leg he had been hiding. "Yeah, this could be a problem," Tiberius murmured. Letting him lean against her shoulder, Gidget replied back as they slowly walked out of the cage, "We'll be out of here in a jiffy."
"That's what you think Princess," Dolly growled as she stepped out of the shadows.
