A Whimsical Mystery

Amelia was always a pessimist at heart, but pretended to love beautiful things for the sake of her mother. Her mother loved to see the best in everything, even after Amelia's sister left the both of them without a word. The last she heard of her she was off married to a very wealthy man and was never coming back, so her very brief letter said. That was the last day that Amelia wanted to be hopeful for humanity.

Until today.

Her best friend since childhood basically kidnapped her to go on an adventure that would change her life. She always hated his optimism but she gritted her teeth and gave in to his charming antics. After all, why not give in once. Or forever.

"C'mon Millie," Kanon said from her balcony rail, hand outstretched to her. "Why not have one night of fun before being locked away forever?"

"Locked away?" her face fell. He really thought of her marriage that way? I thought he didn't care...

"Hey..." he jumped from the rail and took her arm and hand.

"You do care." Her eyes lifted to meet his.

"I-," he stuttered, taken aback. Giving up, he sighed before saying, "I always have."

"Then why not fight for me?"

"That's what I'm doing-"

"No. Why not before? You seemed ecstatic to me engagement, you-"

"You think I didn't want to do? What was I supposed to do? You are engaged to a lord, someone WAY above my class!" he nearly yelled, almost waking up his parents. It was the middle of the night.

"Say it," she pleaded. He inched closer as she closed her eyes and sobbed silently, looking down.

"I love you." He inched even closer, lifting her head from her chin. "I have loved you every day I have known you. And because I love you I gave you your space to venture on your own life. I would never have intervened until you felt the same, until you were mine."

Amelia opened her eyes but the tears poured down. "I just-I just couldn't prove it, I-" His face connected with hers for a brief moment.

"You can prove it to me tonight." She sighed in frustration, tried to pull away but he held firm. "Please, give me this one thing."

She wanted to refuse, needed to refuse. She needed to do what was proper, what was right. But, he was so convincing, so drawing. It was like he was a magnet, and she was being drawn to his charisma. She groaned and hit her head on his shoulder.

"Where to?" she said through her teeth. He chuckled teasingly. He put her at arms length and stole her gaze with his sharp eyes.

"To the stars, my dear." He grabbed both of her hands and ran to the balcony and to the rails a little too fast.

"Kay, wait-!" He didn't listen as he lead them off of the rails and falling down. Kanon covered Amelia's mouth so she wouldn't wake anybody up with her screaming. Before she knew it, Amelia felt impact and into Kanon's arms. Her butterflies were frantic as she was so close to him again, the kiss still fresh on her lips. His eyes danced and she could feel her face heat up. She hit his arm before pulling away and taking in her surroundings.

"An airship?" she sounded quizzical.

"A spaceship!" he opened his arms and turned a 180. "It will take us to the stars," he ran to her, "to wherever we want to go."

"But-uh-I-" There was a paused. Kanon's face slowly fell.

"You'll be back before tomorrow. Don't worry."

She felt guilty but knew that it was right to come back. To be wed. To at least to try and help her family. It wasn't forced, wasn't arranged. It was her own choice. It was also her choice to come here...

"You're already having second thoughts?" he chuckled. "Nothing will happen."

"But something did happen..."

"It won't happen again. I promise." The sail opened and the ship moved. Amelia stumbled but was shocked.

"That happened on it's own," it was a question but also a statement.

"Yes. It's a new technology."

"How can you afford this?"

"I slaved..." he coughed. "Anyways. Let's go see a show so you can actually live for once."

"Oh, I hope so," she smiled.
