Behind the Scenes

The ruthless Lady Macbeth and the wicked witches point Macbeth to the path of evil and disaster. The path he takes results in the murder of his very own king and cousin, Duncan.

The play starts off with "The weird sisters", who meet in bad weather conditions. They are supernatural and are the masters of equivocation. These, who look not like the "inhabitants 'o the earth" are pure evil and spend their time "killing swine" and causing chaos. One of the witches cause disaster for a sailor and traps him at sea because his wife refused to share nuts with her.

The witches chant "fair is foul and foul is fair" and this represents what they plan to do to the world. Their sole function is to cause destruction and confusion and chaos, all they need is an instrument, which happens to be Macbeth, the brave warrior. They play with his ambition to get what they want.

The witches give a "prophetic greeting" to Macbeth and say "that shalt be king hereafter". Even though "to be king stands not within the prospect of belief", Macbeth begins to "yield to that suggestion". He tells the "imperfect speakers" to stay and share their "strange intelligence" with him.

Lady Macbeth receives a letter about the prophecies from her husband. She is transported "beyond the ignorant present" and "feel now the future in the instant". She decides that Duncan must die and calls the "...spirits that tend on mortal thoughts" to "...unisex..." her and fill her "...from the crown to the tow topfull of direst cruelty".

Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth when he decides to "proceed no further in this business" of murdering Duncan. She says that he would "live a coward in thine own esteem", and how she would rather bash her baby's brains out than go back on her word. She convinces him that he would "Be so much more the man" if he murdered the king.

Lady Macbeth plans Duncan's death until the very last detail. She plans to blame "his spongy officers" for their deed. After Macbeth kills the king she goes to "gild the faces of the grooms withal; for it must seem their guilt", and leaves behind their bloody daggers with them.

Macbeth has chosen to follow the path of chaos and murder Duncan. Behind the scenes Lady Macbeth and the witches had contributed.
