How to (not) save a life

Xerean isn't sure how fond she is of this Task.

Her Task for Session 4(the rest of Session 3 was pretty uneventful; other than Grian burning his weird stair art((or at least attempting to, 'burning' may not be the right word here)), BigB confusing people again, and Xerean notifying the Watcher that her headaches are getting worse) is "Follow Martyn around all Session. You do not need to be close, but you must keep him in eyesight at all times, you have 10 seconds to get him back in your sight if you lose track of him. If he calls you out, you fail." Xerean stares at the scroll. "Cool." Martyn's a yellow, and has devised some plan of interrogation where he follows people around, listening in on conversations and observing behaviour before coming to officially take a guess. He calls himself or this method the 'Task Force', and while it's amusing, it's also hard to avoid. Although, if she manages to make him guess incorrectly, it would help. Lizzie, Joel, Skizz, Gem, and Jimmy are yellow, too, so not as helpful as she'd like, but still enough that she'll hopefully not fail. Rolling up her scroll, she puts on her festival hat and sweeps out, quietly passing Scar, who's still sleeping, a small frown on his face. He's been sleeping even less, ever since the end of Session 2, and Xerean worries. He looks healthy, but he also hasn't lost that many hearts, so his body isn't accurately reflecting the exhaustion. Slipping out of Trader Scar's, she goes to track down Martyn.

The man is still at his base, presumably getting materials for his day. She's decided to keep her distance at first, but eventually, she'll approach him like she wants to hang out. He leaves shortly after, hopping into a pool of water he and Jimmy appear to have made for that sole reason: quick travelling down. The first thing that happens is that Scar greets him, and slides him a diamond for something. Martyn picks it up, listens to whatever Scar's saying, and then offers his hand for a handshake. It's obviously some sort of deal, even though Xerean doesn't know what it was; she's too far away to hear. Maybe Scar will tell her later. When Martyn leaves, Xerean follows, making it seem less stalker-y that it is by acting casual and picking up random things. He visits people and listens in on conversations, as he often does, not once letting on to a possibility he knows he's being followed, which she hopes he doesn't know.

Most of the Session works like that, but she does get concerned about what Scar's up to. It's not that he's avoiding her, but he'll be running, looking quite distressed, wearing a helmet. The most he got out of him was a "Hi Xerean okay byeeee..." as he zoomed past. Joel and Lizzie primarily are chasing him, though sometimes Martyn and Jimmy will join in. The two also gather to discuss things, once, even gathering to discuss things with the other yellows. It's after that when she decides to join Martyn. She's great at watching people from afar, but she's sort of bored of not talking to anyone yet. "...not done anything heinous, but he's definitely not being good, either–he killed all of Lizzie's cows, apparently." Jimmy's saying. "Who killed all of Lizzie's cows?" She asks. Jimmy jumps, whipping around to face her, while Martyn grins mischievously, having watched her sneak up on the man. "Where'd you come from?!" He exclaims. "No, don't answer that, I already know." She snickers as Jimmy sighs. She'd often just abruptly appear around him to say hi back in Empires, so he probably assumes that's what happened here. "I don't think I've seen you at all this week–where've you been?" She shrugs. "Out and about. I've been a bit lonely with Scar running every which way all the time, so I'm just looking for some company." She replies. Martyn nods, then looks at her as though he has an idea. "Do you have any idea what he's been up to?" She shakes her head. "I've only seen him from afar. He's wearing a helmet, though, I wanted to ask–isn't that against the rules, I thought?" Martyn nods. "Yeah, so we can identify one another better." She tilts her head. "And Scar knows he has it on?" Jimmy crosses his arms. "He's run every time Joel tries to tell him to take it off." He explains. "Strange." She murmurs. Clearly something to do with a Task, since she can't imagine Scar doing something intentionally bad, but she wonders what exactly it is. "He's not acting very nice...breaking the rules, killing Lizzie's cows, hurting Skizz...sounds a bit more like villain behaviour to me." Jimmy speculates. "You think his Task has something to with being bad? Martyn says, the two delving into conversation as though forgetting she's there. She isn't hurt, more amused how focused they are on this. "Something like that, yeah." Jimmy agrees, then points over to where Scar's walking in the distance, glancing over his shoulders every so often and clearly looking ready to flee at a moment's notice. "I say I have my guess." Jimmy announces, and the two head off, so Xerean follows them. She's curious to see how these two go about such an accusation. In her opinion, this doesn't seem to be enough warranting a label like 'villain', though again, she knows practically nothing about these worlds and how these people live them.

"Hello, Scar." Jimmy says, striding up to the man. The bags under his eyes are a bit more noticeable, there's a tight way to how he's holding himself, and his hands are close to his chest, hidden under the poncho. His smile is wary, and while he doesn't shrink into himself, but he seem's close to doing so. "Uh, hey–hey guys. Oh, Xerean, what're you doing here?" Scar inquires, both relaxing and tensing up a little at the same time. "I just said hi to them and then they ran over here, so I came to see what's up." She replies, Scar nodding a little. His gaze flickers around constantly, from looking to the person speaking, to watching someone move in his peripheral, or checking beyond and around them. Whatever's going on, Scar is highly stressed. She's never truly seen him scared before, so she isn't sure if that's the word, but the two can and do often go hand in hand. "Now, Scar, we've been watching you and your antics this week pretty well...and I think Jimmy here has something to say." Martyn says, moving to let Jimmy take the spotlight. "Oh–you're gonna guess my Task?" Scar realizes, stepping back slightly. "I can tell you want to run off, because your Task is...to be the villain of the Server." Jimmy states, and Scar begins to laugh. It's a laugh unlike any Xerean has heard from Scar before, a wild, pained, but still relieved and freed chuckle, but tinged with a hint of clear malevolence. Not only that, but as he does, the green earring he has seems to start glowing, and doesn't fade when he stops. Martyn has drawn closer to both Xerean and Jimmy, standing slightly ahead of them both in a subtle way to make it seem like a casual change of position. Clearly, he's as unsettled as Xerean was. Except she knows that wasn't a Scar laugh. Again, he doesn't laugh like that, not from what she's heard. "Oh, you were close, I'll give you that." Scar says, resting his hands on his knees. "I...I was?" Jimmy replies, and Scar nods. "Come here. Let me give you a pat on the back. I'll tell you something." He steps forward, and Martyn steps as well, then steps away as though thinking better of it. Scar actually gives the man a hug, then withdraws, looking ever so slightly calmer. "You were off by a technicality." He informs them, and Martyn thinks for a moment. "Scar, can you stand still for me?" He asks, but before Scar can do anything, they're interrupted by Gem, riding in on a camel with Pearl and Impulse. "Hello, friends! How are you today?" She asks brightly. The yellow eye she sports is a good compliment color thing for her blue one, Xerean notes. "Er, I think we're doing well, we were just talking to Scar here–oh, and he's gone. Okay. Anyway, can we help you?" Gem grins. "You can, actually! See, I'm recruiting a bunch of people to go to the End with me! We're gonna fight the Dragon." She announces. This admittedly intrigues Xerean; she's gone to the End before, but never fought or actually seen the Dragon. "So you want us to go with you?" Martyn infers. "Yeah!" Martyn shakes his head. "I'll pass, thank you." He decides. "Oh. Okay." Xerean feels bad, but also declines. She has to do her Task, after all. "Now, let's go see if we can find Scar." Martyn announces, after Gem and her troupe have left.

Jimmy leaves to go do something, leaving her and Martyn alone, and therefore, in awkward silence. "You take much damage here? You don't seem very worried about the not-regenerating hearts." Martyn inquires after a while. "It's...daunting, to be sure, but it's manageable. Not thinking on it too much is very helpful." Not to mention that she and Jabber often spar together when she's not sparring with Hels, and the other Chaos Witch's version of sparring is just 'try to kill you with as much and as many different things as possible all at once'. She fits it into a similar category. "I might have to try that." He replies, then stops. "Is Grian...burning his egg?" Indeed he is; and as they watch, it disappears rather quickly. "If that went so fast, why did his stairs stay?" Xerean wonders, amused. "It seems as though they won't burn, as to why, we have no idea." Martyn shrugs. "Say, I haven't tried to guess your Task yet, have I?" She shakes her head. If she plays it cool, maybe he won't suspect it. "Yeah, I haven't seen you all Session. What have you been up to?" She waves her hand around. "Visiting, mining, getting food, just stuff." She replies, deliberately being vague. "Hm. I don't think anyone else's seen you around, either. Like you disappeared." She manages to keep her expression calm, though at that moment, someone hits what she assumes to be a Succeed, making her face twitch as the headache arrives. She feels different, though. A sort of hum went through her. She feels closer to being herself. Did Grian fix something? She hopes so. "You good? Getting worried?" She shakes her head. The headaches hurt, but not so much she can't function. More like she just fell from three blocks, an experience she's recently had. It hurts more than last time, though. "No, I'm...I just got a headache for a moment. I'm fine." She replies. "Oh, that's not fun. Any reason why?" She shrugs with a wry expression. "Not one I can tell." She answers. "Ah. Well, anyway, I don't think I have enough information on you to make an accurate guess, so you're in the clear for now. You still up for looking for Scar?" She nods. "Sure." She replies.

They don't find Scar. Instead, about a day later, they get a notification saying that Gem, Pearl, and Impulse have found the End Portal. 10 minutes later, they make it into the End itself. "I wonder if any of them will die?" Martyn says, mostly to himself. According to Scott, they had just missed him, and it's gone from guessing his Task to wondering why he's always running away and sounds so anxious. While they're about to come up on Joel's helter-skelter, there's another notification in the chat, Bdubs is now also fighting the Dragon. "It'd be really funny if someone went in and just killed it from under them, wouldn't it?" Grian notes, having popped up to see what they were doing. "Are you making friends, Xerean?" He asks instantly afterwards. "I mean, I hope so? More like we both have a common alignment of interest for separate reasons, so a temporary team-up seems useful." Martyn blinks at her sudden use of strange wording, but Grian chuckles and nods. "Makes sense." Martyn looks at the sky, then at the chat. "They still haven't killed it, and nobody has died, either...it's gotta be close." Martyn muses, then nods. "Looks like I'm going to the End." Grian points at Xerean. "You should go, too. You haven't seen the Dragon yet, this is a good chance." He changes his tone ever so slightly on the last sentence, clearly he knows something specific is happening there and wants her to be a part of it. She nods. "Right, so, you need anything or are you all set?" She straightens her shoulders, trying to look brave and warrior-y. "I'm all set." She declares. "You may want me to hold on to your hat, though...don't want you to lose it." Grian adds. "That's true, it's a good hat, it'd be a shame to lose it in the Void." Martyn agrees. Reluctantly, she hands over the festival hat, and the two set off, joined by Jimmy. They do pass Scar, though none of them comment on it, a small look of confusion in Scar's gaze as the two lock eyes. She'll explain any questions he has after the Session. That's in about another day, if her time is correct.

The End Portal is transfixing. It looks so deep, so wonderful and full of stars and places to go, yet it's a thin layer of a deliberate, controlled rift in space and dimension. "You never seen an End Portal before?" Cleo asks, not unkindly. She genuinely doesn't care about what Xerean is, or the fact she's here, she treats her like she treats anybody and everybody else, which is something the young Chaos Witch appreciates greatly. "This will be my first time using one." She agrees. "Then let's make it a good one!" Cleo jumps, followed by Jimmy, then Martyn, and after a moment's hesitation, Xerean jumps through, too. Instantly, she's met with an issue:

Martyn's falling off the edge.

*PoV change cuz I said so*

"Oh, no!" Martyn yells, twisting around to try and grab the platform. Of course, he's too far away for that, but something grabs his arm instead, holding it in a tight grip and pulls to try and help. It's Xerean, leaning back with all her might, despite the fact her feet are still sliding towards the edge anyway. Before he can shout at her to let go, something else happens:

The girl sprouts several legs from her back.

They aren't human legs, either, they're like spider legs, which reach around the back and sides of the platform and hold her in place. "What the hell are those???" He yells, almost losing his grip on her forearm. In response, her own hold tightens, more than he expected from a girl like her. Not to say he thought her weak, but she isn't built bulky, either. Despite the extra limbs, she seems overjoyed, very pleased about something, even with the strain and effort on her face. "Never mind that–I can't move, so I need you to try and climb up my arms like a rope, okay?" She says, grunting in her effort to hold on. Strong as she is, she obviously won't be holding on for long. Swinging his other arm up, he attempts to slowly pull himself back up, Xerean keeping her hands open but ready to grab him if he slips again. He makes it up to just before her elbows, before the dragon roars in the background, and either Xerean loses focus, or her luck ran out, but the legs disappear, and Martyn drops, accidentally dragging him down with her, off the platform. "No!!" She howls, not an anguished cry or some sort of despair, but like she was actively yelling in anger at something. She thrusts her hand out at the platform, then does it again more aggressively when nothing happens. "There's nothing we can do." Martyn says, mostly worried she'll dislocate her shoulder trying to repeat that again. "You don't understand, Martyn, I could have done it! Why wouldn't it–" Xerean cuts herself off, face flickering from rage to grief to confusion to something else he doesn't know. "You tried, and I appreciate that." He tries, realizing that they've gone past the bottom of the island, and in a moment, will run out of air. "I'm so sorry, Martyn." She says, before they lose their ability to breathe, and begin gasping, seeking the oxygen that they'd left, and Martyn blacks out.

He wakes up, taking a deep breath and sitting upright. Jimmy looks over at him, eyes red. "You died too?" Martyn asks, genuinely surprised. "Just before you. I, uh...the claw on the dragon's wing caught me and threw me into a pillar." He says, lifting his shirt just enough to reveal the angry scar rippling down his side and undoubtedly up his back. "Xerean died too." He says, more a realization than a statement. Now it's Jimmy's turn to be genuinely surprised. "She did? I thought she–" Jimmy pauses, then rephrases. "She's a pretty strong kid, despite her size. I would've thought the could help you." He says. "She tried to, and either I was too heavy or she lost focus, and we both fell." Martyn explains. There's a sort of sad look in his ally's eyes, and Martyn stands. "I'm going to go see if she's alright. Dying in the Void isn't fun." He decides. "Maybe not just yet. Let her have a bit of time to herself and her friends. And you're red. She might not trust you." Jimmy points out. "I'd suggest at least after the Session ends." He adds, which works for Martyn. He needs to get his thoughts in order.

He's got a few more questions for her, now.
