The Ribbon

As the new girl in town, she didn't know much about the neighbourhood or its stories. She was excited to have a fresh start outside of the city away from everything that had happened. She wasn't bullied or troubled, she just needed a change of pace, and so did her parents, at least that's what they want her to believe. She knows the real reason why they moved, and she wished she didn't, her parents tell her it wasn't her fault, but it was.

She reached up and touched the bright pink ribbon in her hair staring at her reflection in the silver framed mirror. She wanted so badly to rip it out of her hair and leave it behind like what she had done with everything else in her past. He had given it to her but, it is almost as if some force had kept her from dropping it that day, she could not let go. The more she looked at the ribbon in the mirror the more she could see the fraying edges and the slight greenish tint along the ends. There was a small spot where you could see the dark pink, almost red, because the sun could never reach that part of the ribbon. It was still stunning though.

She ran the brush through her silky black hair and put on her short white sundress. She absolutely loved this sundress; if you look close enough you could see little pink flowers spattered along the left side going from the neckline down to the skirt. It was a beautiful dress, at least that was what he would always say to her. She put on her short grey converse and headed out into the afternoon sunlight.

She was a dreamer; she always had her head in the clouds. She couldn't help it really; it was a way to stop thinking about her stress or anxiety. She could just think she was somewhere else. So that is what she did, she walked and dreamed about being able to fly, or being able to tell stories that would make people forget about their worries, tell stories like he could. She continued to dream just that, until she came to a cave.

The cave had a wide opening but, the light seemed to be swallowed by the darkness, all she could make out was a silhouette in the darkness. She took a step closer and peered inside. Without thinking she reached up and touched the ribbon in her hair as if trying to draw strength from it. She strained her eyes but could not make out any humanly shape. She could not shake that she was being watched. So not knowing what else to do she closed her eyes and listened.

She stood there and listened and could make out the faint sounds of crying. It sounded like a young girl. Against her better judgement, she called into the cave, holding the ribbon in her hair as she did.

"Hello? Are you okay in there?" She called into the cave. She stood and waited for a reply.

"Guilt, regret" The soft voice answered quietly, as if not to scare her away.

She was about to respond when she saw an outline move in the shadows, and out of the darkness emerges a girl about the same age as her. She looked at the girl, she had short brown hair and she wore a blouse and skirt that resembled a school uniform. They looked at each other for a moment. The girl had this suspicious aura about her, even though everything else about her felt comforting and welcoming. Like visiting a relative you didn't know existed or going to the psychologists for the first time.

"Would you like to talk about what happened? I was told that it helps to do that," she said to the girl.

The girl played with her hair and sat down against a rock and pulled her knees to her chest.

"Have you ever done something you regret so much that you wish you could forget it happened?" The girl looked her in the eyes. They sat there and looked into each other's eyes for a long moment.

"Yes, I have," she reached up and pulled the ribbon out of her hair, "he is gone because of what I did. If there was any way I could forget I would take it." She looked over at the girl and could have sworn she could see the ghost of a smile.

"What if I told you I could make it happen?" the girl looked at her "would you want me to help you forget?"

"That is preposterous! You don't have the power to do that," she giggled.

She thought about how her life would be if she could forget about him, "take my hands and I will prove to you that I can."

The girl held out her hands just inside the mouth of the cave. She hesitated before tying the pink ribbon in her hair and stepping into the mouth of the cave. She slipped her hands into the outstretched hands, they felt icy cold.

"Now think about what you want to forget," She felt the envy, and the sadness, the love and anger, she thought of him. The memory left a bitter feeling on her tongue and a sinking feeling in her gut.

Then suddenly it was dark. She did not know what happened or where she was, she felt this tidal wave of guilt crash into her. She reached up and grabbed at the ribbon. She did not know why, but it felt important. She yanked it out of her hair and cried over it in the darkness. She could not recall anything. She cried yet, she could not remember why, only that it was her fault, and she regrets that she could not remember.
