14 ・ Chemistry
Walking in the classroom early in the morning with my steaming thermos of coffee, I walked to my desk that I haven't seen in a couple months. I set my purse and coffee down, surveying my room that would soon be filled with teens. I was surprised to find an envelope already sitting on my desk with my name on it. My heart skipped a beat when I recognized the handwriting on it as Paul's, the science teacher. Or as the students call him, Mr. Acro.
I haven't seen him all summer, but I definitely thought about him. I guess we could've hung out over the vacation, but we're just good friends at this poiint.
Taking another sip of coffee, I opened the envelope and was surprised to see what looked like a recipe.
It said:
• 20 - Volume hydrogen peroxide
• 1 Tablespoon of dry yeast
• 3 Tablespoons of warm water
• Liquid dish soap
• Food coloring
Confused, I flipped it over but nothing was written on the back.
The door then opened, and it was Mr. Acro himself. I felt a smile warm my face as he walked up to my desk sheepishly and held out another piece of paper. "Sorry, I mixed up the note with a recipe for today's lesson plan. Here's the note that I should've put in the envelope."
I laughed and took the paper, and then gave him back the recipe. "What's this experiment?" I asked.
"It's called Elephant's Toothpaste," and when he noticed my blank expression, he chuckled and explained, "It's basically an exploding foam."
"Ah," I said, "sounds interesting. I think the kids would love that."
He nodded, and then said, "Would you want to come to my class during your free period to check it out?"
I smiled at him and replied, "That sounds great, I'll be there."
