The Gemini Twins: Detective Edition
Requested by @Audrey_and_Diliah Thank you so much!!
In a small city across the stars lived a pair of twins called Gem and Nye Gemini. The two of them had been together for as long as they could recall, and probably longer than that. Gem loved to bring up that she was the older twin, although Nye knew that there was no true difference either way.
Despite being joined from the hip at a young age, Gem and Nye were not much alike. Gem had been dubbed the evil twin since they had been two and she cut Nye's hair while he slept in their crib. Nye, on the other hand, had always been a more angelic child, something which Gem despised him for. All in all, the two twins balanced each other out fairly well; Nye stopped all of Gem's schemes and Gem made sure that Nye has some adventures along the way.
I suppose this particular story starts in late summer in a town called NormalVille.
The twins had been sitting together in the living room watching the news when it had happened. Gem barely had the time to look up from her magazine when she heard the name. She quickly let go of her magazine and snatched the remote pausing it on a familiar face. Gem leaned forward, her blonde hair falling into her face as she did so. She threw her magazine at Nye.
"Ow!" Nye yelped, holding his arm which had begun bleeding. "I have a paper cut now, thanks."
Gem just shook her head, ignoring Nye's cries. "Whatever, Nye, look!"
Nye cocked his head to see a brunette girl with blue eyes and a small face smiling on the screen, a photograph from the yearbook. The caption, 'Local girl goes missing,' made Nye go pale.
"That's Aquarius, Gem," Nye said with alarm. "Aqua's missing?"
"Yes, you dipshit," Gem replied, scowling. "We've gotta find her."
Nye shook his head and stood up. He paced the room incessantly, going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth. Gem watched as his panic raged on and on, almost enjoying his terror. Nye shook his head again before coming to a definite decision on the matter.
"We should leave this for the police to figure out," Nye decided, nodding as if to confirm it to himself. "The police are better suited for this."
Gem drew out a long sigh, still sitting in her chair comfortably. Nye looked at her, his eyes were wide and watery and he was trembling all over, fidgeting with his shirt. He and Gem made eye contact and held it in a tense battle, unknowing who would look away first or what the victor would win. Nye finally broke, being forced to wipe his eyes from the tears that had begun streaming down them.
"Why aren't you freaking out, Gem?" Nye asked.
Gem rolled her eyes. "We can save Aqua, easy."
"Can we save Aqua in a legal way?" Nye asked, his foot tapping.
"We can not save Aqua," Gem corrected. "Not unless we compromise here."
Nye shook his head and folded his arms. With his voice trembling, he said, "I'm not breaking any laws, Gem. I refuse."
Gem sighed. She hopped out of her seat and grabbed her purse, only wearing a pair of jean shorts and tube top as the heat of the summer was constantly rising. Nye watched as she tightened her shoelaces and approached the door. As she turned the handle, Nye stopped her.
"What?" Gem asked, sounding almost bored.
"Where are you going?" Nye asked her.
"I'm going to go save Aqua," Gem said incredulously. "It's not like I was gonna stay home while my best friend is in danger."
"You can't just leave when there's a kidnapper on the lose!" Nye exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air. He buried his face in his hands while Gem watched him have a miniature breakdown.
"First off, we don't know if it's kidnapping. Aqua has a tendency to go MIA a lot anyways. Second of all, I do what I want," Gem snapped at him.
Nye slicked his hair back and bit the inside of his cheek before grabbing his phone off the table. "Fine, but I'm coming too."
Gem raised her eyebrows, impressed but not quite surprised, as Nye followed her out the door in pursuit of her best friend. Nye blindly followed Gem for a few blocks before they finally approached the shadier side of town. Nye frowned as they hid behind a wall corner. He noticed some guys lurking at the side of an alleyway, both with their heads down, as if avoiding the human eye. Nye glanced at Gem, his eyes wide and trembling, as she sauntered over to them.
Nye could see her talking to them, keeping her head down. She eventually ended up slipping them money, just enough for them to start speaking more actively. Nye stared, almost in fear, of what his sister was doing. He knew she was generally not the nicest person, but he didn't know her sister was so illegal. She walked back over to him, and he noticed she wore a sun hat and sunglasses that she hadn't been wearing prior. Nye scowled at her, but refused to come out of hiding.
"Good news?" Nye asked. Despite his disapproval of the method, genuine hope laced his voice.
Gem nodded. She glanced around to make sure that nobody was there to overhear. "The good news is that a bunch of guys here know what happened. The bad news is they won't go to the police because most of the people in this area are criminals."
Nye dragged out a sigh and looked at his sister dubiously. "This means more illegal activity."
Gem gave him a sweet smile, a smile that made him sick. "Anything's legal when the cops aren't around."
Nye's mouth fell open in disdain. "You cannot just quote Grunkle Stan at me and expect me to go along with it."
Gem spread her arms open wide, in an obvious challenge. "You're not stopping me."
"Give me one reason why I shouldn't," Nye grumbled.
Gem shrugged. "You're in love with Aqua?"
Nye turned a deep shade of scarlet and Gem snickered. She started to walk away, causing Nye to follow her shamefully. They walked along the sidewalk, men occasionally catcalling Gem or harassing Nye in belief that they were dating. Nye thought it to be a reasonable belief at times, because they looked nothing alike. Gem had light skin and blonde hair, but Nye had dark brown skin and brown hair. They didn't look much like siblings, let alone twins, but they enjoyed the ability to pretend the other didn't exist.
Nye was following Gem blindly, which was not a feeling he appreciated. Apparently, she was on her way to find the main witness of the kidnapping. Why Aquarius was in this neighborhood, Nye could not figure out, so he hoped Gem had some ideas on how to find her. As they walked along, Gem was constantly looking over her shoulder for one reason or another. It made Nye anxious, feeling like he was being watched too. As suddenly as they had started their journey, they stopped.
They stood outside of a breaking-down bar that was filled with thugs and hookers—or so Nye assumed— and Gem was opening the door to go in it. Gem and Nye walked inside and all eyes turned on them. Gem took a seat at the bar, despite being significantly too young to do so, and ordered a coke. Nye stood at the back of the bar and waited hesitantly for Gem to return.
Gem almost didn't want to return. She was enjoying the scene of the bar, the little arguments and the feeling of community in there. But she had a job to do and a friend to save and a brother to blame all the illegal activity on later. She leaned over to the guy next to her, tough and large and could probably beat Nye in a fight, according to Gem that is.
"Hey, listen, I'm looking for a guy," Gem said coolly. "The name is Manson Dean. It's urgent business, Val."
The man, Val, nodded and looked around the room. He pointed to a scrawny man in the corner, playing an old Pac-Man game.
Gem flashed him a sweet smile. "Thanks, Val. See you Tuesday for karaoke night."
"Anytime, Gem," Val replied.
Gem wandered over to the Manson and stood next to his game, glaring him down until he had the nerve to look him in the eye. When he did finally meet her eye, it was only for a split second before returning to his game. Gem, who was chewing gum, blew a bubble and popped it. Startled by the noise, he lost his game.
Manson rolled his eyes and looked at the girl who had cost him the high score. However, he shrunk away within seconds of seeing her.
"What do you want?" He asked, his voice high and wavering.
Gem rolled her eyes. "Don't be a freak, Manson, I'm not a cop. Also, I know you're game and where you sell, so if you tell me what I need to know, the cops won't hear a word from me about your little business."
Manson nodded meekly.
"I need you to tell me everything you know about the kidnapping of a girl that you witnessed. She goes by the name Aquarius."
Manson paled and nodded again. "I saw the girl you just mentioned. She was being forced into a red car, one of the convertible types, in a trunk. She was fighting, fighting real hard. I did recognize them guys tho, the ones she was tryin' a fight off. He's beens a loyal client. They call 'im Blindspot."
"Blindspot? Really? The harmless guy who buys us all beers every Saturday?" Gem said, gritting her teeth. "Well, I guess I'm going after Blindspot. Where can I find him?"
"He runs a cheap car repair downs the town," Manson mumbled. "Youse would do well notz to say youse heard it from me."
Gem nodded and flashed him a dangerous smile. "You would do well to pretend we've never met."
Gem walked away and back up to Nye.
"Well?" Nye asked, tapping his foot.
"We get to deal with even more thugs," Gem exclaimed, a bright smile on her face.
Nye frowned as the two of them exited the establishment. "You're happy about this?"
"I'm happy it's pissing you off," Gem replied with snark.
Nye sighed. He shook his head and caught up to her fast pace. "So what's the deal?"
"We're going to a car garage and finding the guys who took Aqua."
"What if they take you?"
Gem flashed him a friendly smile, but her eyes were screaming a challenge. "Then I'll have my brother to protect me."
Nye frowned again. "You're literally insane."
Gem snorted. "You've known me since the womb and you've only just figured it out now?"
The two of them finished their walk in a grudging silence. As they approached the repair shop, Gem and Nye both became increasingly nervous. Gem knew this part of town well, but she didn't own a car and therefore never came to this shop. She and Nye has both failed their drivers test several times. Nye drove too slow and Gem too fast. Except, somehow, Nye was the one who lost control and crashed into a stop sign.
The two of them approached and Gem was the first one to open the door. It was loud inside: metal clanged, voices shouted, and car engines revved up. The two of them walked in side by side, both remaining eerily calm given the situation.
"What's the plan?" Nye asked Gem, in a hushed whisper as they passed a group of tough looking men and women. "Do we just flat out ask them for our friend back?"
Gem shook her head and took a few sharp glances around. There were multiple doors, and she was sure there were some secret ones too, and there were only two of them. The majority of people in this place were men, something Gem had been counting on-- most of the women from the area spent their time at the rival car repair shop. Gem figured the owners reputation preceded him. From the looks of the doors, there were probably only two exits, the one her and Nye had just entered, and one that she hadn't yet located. The bad guy always had a secret getaway. While she was busy surveying the room, Nye had come to the startling realization that everyone was staring at the two of them. He quickly nudged his sister.
Gem nodded and put on her sweetest smile. "I'm gonna distract everybody in here, and you're going to go searching for Aquarius and whatever other girls are being locked up here."
Nye sighed, but nodded. "Good luck, sis."
Gem squinted at him. "Never call me sis again."
Gem and Nye split up. Gem went and stood on a table and immediately began crying. All eyes turned to her as they wondered what was upsetting such a pretty young girl. Gem collapsed onto her knees and the entirety of the shop rushed over to comfort her, Nye took that as his cue to start looking around.
Nye began knocking on doors and listening in, trying to figure out which one held his friend and sister's best friend. He rattled each doorknob, trying to push away the worrying thoughts that invaded his mind. He continued doing so, praying to whatever god or gods that do exist or did in some past lifetime.
Gem, on the other hand, was rattling off on some false tale about how her boyfriend had dumped her and left her in the middle of a strange neighborhood where she knew no one. She went on and on about how afraid she was and how she needed some strong man to save her and take care of her in her boyfriends absence. Nye thought it was a bit overdone, but it was getting all of the guys attention, each of them offering her drinks and snacks and places to spend the night. Nye wondered if he should start pitying the poor men or if he should get Gem an audition for a movie.
As Nye attempted to open the last door, it flew open instantly. Nye took a step back and glanced around to see if anyone had noticed him breaking in. Nobody had stopped to check out the noise, so he took a deep breath and walked into the closet, using his phone as a flashlight. Inside of the closet was nothing but an empty space and an ugly lime green rug on the floor. Nye decided that, if nothing else, he would do the guy a favor and get rid of the hideous lime green atrocity that laid on his closet floor. When he picked it up, a metallic door was revealed under it. Nye tossed the hideous rug aside, and put his phone down. The only way to open it was a small rope, which was been hidden carefully. Nye began tugging at the rope desperately, getting more and more scared with each pull. After a few tries, the hatch creaked open to reveal a ladder. Nye closed the door to the room so that nobody would notice him climbing down.
When Nye arrived in the small room, the first thing he noticed was the hideous furniture. Random colors were thrown around every which way and there were fifty different rugs all on the same floor. The second thing he noticed was Aquarius and another girl tied up and sitting on the ugliest couch he had ever seen. Nye shook off the surprise and ran over to Aquarius with a grin. He quickly untied the two girls, the second one in which Nye had never met.
Aquarius spit her gag out. "Thank God, I thought we were going to die down here."
The other girl took her gag out and placed it down. "I wouldn't tempt fate. I'm Cass, who are you two?"
"My name is Aquarius, and this is my friend Nye," Aquarius said briskly. The two turned to Nye. "How do we get out of here?"
"We pray my sister has a good plan," Nye muttered. "Come on, we have to climb back up. Gem is distracting everyone up there, but I don't know how much longer she can flirt for."
"Her record is four hours straight, but only because she found the guy repulsive," Aquarius replied.
The other two ignored her as they scaled the ladder. Nye opened the door back up, which he luckily had put the green rug between the hatch and the ground so that it wouldn't lock, and crawled onto ground level. He helped Aquarius and Cass up, quietly closing the door and putting the rug back over the hatch. Quietly, he checked his phone to make sure there was no news from Gem, which there wasn't, and opened the door as quietly as he could. The door made a creak. A loud enough creak to turn some heads from whatever elaborate story Gem was telling.
The three of them made eye contact with Aquarius' and Cass's captor.
"Run." Nye gave Gem a wave as the three of them made a run for the emergency exit. Gem jumped down from the table and sprinted away, blowing kisses as she left, as if bowing for a final performance.
As the four made it outside, their only choice was to keep running until they were out of reach from their original captors. They took a few turns, being led by Nye, who apparently had no idea where he was going. The four of them eventually ended up taking a few rights and Aquarius was forced to lead them out. She led them through a few alleyways and over a fence until she reached her neighborhood.
From there, they all walked, almost afraid of looking too suspicious. The four of them finally came across a one story white house--Aquarius' house. Aquarius rushed the four of them inside and they all took a deep breath, trying to cope with what had just occurred.
"How did you guys find me?" Aquarius asked, as the other three plopped down on her couch.
Gem shrugged. "The usual. Blackmail and such."
Aquarius sighed. "Thank you guys so much. I love you both."
"Same here," Cass piped. "I really owe you guys one."
"Should we go to the police or something?" Nye asked.
Aquarius nodded. "Yeah, probably. After a soda though, alright? I've been gone for two days now."

Presenting.... The Gemini twins! This was actually so fun to write because I loved the dynamic I put them in. And for reference, I picture them kind of like Sadie and Carter Kane from the Kane Chronicles, but without Sadie's crazy hair dye and without the magic. Anyways, thank you so much for the requests! I'll keep working on them!
