The Seed
Disclaimer: This is not a continued story, it is a short stories book so the chickens have different personalities. 🌈🦄
"Ugh. They won't come out of the coop!"
"They will Mom, when the time comes."
Sally and her daughter Willow were standing outside the chickens coop. The chickens hadn't come out for weeks because of the cold winter weather. Sally was getting frustrated as there was a lot more poop in the coop for her to clean up.
Meanwhile, the chickens had been freezing their fluffy butts off for the whole winter. They were afraid to go outside because they knew it was even more frigid outside than in their coop.
"Brrr. Why can't we have the sacred 'heating vent' in our coop." Hermione clucked exasperatedly.
"It's called 'e-lec-tri-cit-y' which means--"
"Yes, yes Ashes, we get it, something important for humans. Well, I'm going to go take a nap. Maybe there is fresh scratch." Hermione stalked off, ruffling her feathers.
"She's so rude." Speckle clucked. Hermione had been very angry and rude lately and no chicken knew why.
"Maybe It's because I'm much smarter than her." Ashes, Birches identical twin, had taken to reading human books about human life. At night, she would sneak out of her coop by unlocking the door with a stick (something she had learned from her mother) and half-flew to the town library. It was a long journey but she knew where it was from following Sally and Willow when they walked to the library together.
However, Ashes was not modest about this new knowledge. All of a sudden, she thought she was beautiful because of her 'shimmering red feathers', and thought she was the smartest chicken alive because of her reading skills and what she knew about human life. None of the other chickens enjoyed this.
Hermione was not taking a nap. She was tired of Ashes being so smart and snobby. She was going to run away. Now.
She burst through the doors of the upper part of the coop, immediately regretting her decision because she fell to the ground with a thump. She also knew the other chickens had heard her. Ignoring he pain in her right wing she ran to the woods as fast as her legs would take her.
"What was that?!" Speckle squawked frantically.
"Everyone hide! I think it's a coyote!" Ashes clucked.
"It was a thump, not a howl, I thought you were the smartest chicken." Speckle replied.
"Will you guys stop! I'm sure everything is fine. It's probably just the wind." Birch, Ashes twin clucked.
Still weary, everyone decided to go to bed, too scared to look out the window. They thought Hermione might know what the thump was. But when they got up to the roosting part of the coop, Hermione was gone.
Hermione walked farther and farther into the woods, trying not to look back at the light of Sally and Willows home. She was scared, yes, but a lot more eager to get away from her old life and especially Ashes.
Crash! Hermione fell onto her right wing, the pain intensifying after her earlier fall. Her eyes blurry from the pain and shock, Hermione didn't notice the glow emanating in front of her until she walked past it.
That night, Hermione had a dream. Not just a dream. A nightmare.
"Don't just stand there, runt, DO SOMETHING!"
"Ashes, don't do this, I didn't mean to..."
"Sure you didn't. We all know you stole the seed of life."
"But I--
"Another word out of your beak and you die."
"That's a bit harsh Ashes, why don't we send her to chicken jail for life instead..."
"You're too soft Speckle. Tonight is the night we lose what we thought was our friend."
"NO! PLEASE! AHHHHH!"
Hermione woke with a squawk of fright.
She had never thought about the seed of life until now. She wondered what would cause such a nightmare. She had never stolen anything in her life.
The seed of life was supposed to bring life to any chicken who ate it. It was supposed to heal them and protect them from any harm or illness for eternity. And that meant...... the chicken who ate it would live forever.
The next morning the four chickens were in dismay. Hermione was gone. Finally, Speckle calmed them down and they made a plan for a search party.
"Don't worry, we will find her"
"Actually-"
"Don't say it Ashes. There is no logic to finding or not finding some chicken."
Hermione walked around for a while, occasionally finding bugs and things to eat. She found a particularly juicy beetle when she realized. The Seed of Life.
She raced back to the place where she fell earlier, trying not to think of the pain in her wing. When she got there, she was faced with the glow once again. It was the seed.
Ashes was happy. She knew they wouldn't find Hermione. She didn't like her anyway. All she wanted to do was learn about the Seed of Life, which she had found a book on in the library.
Then an idea slipped into Ashes mind. Like always. Maybe if she said she would go up the road ALONE to check if Hermione was there, she could go learn about the Seed instead of wasting time trying to find a useless brainless chicken.
Before getting to the Seed, Hermione had ran about half an hour. When she found the seed, she also found something else. Something unwanted.
"Ashes."
"Hey Hermione!" And with that, Ashes gulped down the seed.
And died.
The seed is a lie.
The End.
