Chapter 1 -
"Ugh, mother, why do we have to move in this house?" Maddie asked her mother irritatedly, although she knew the answer. Her mother had a new 'bae' as Maddie called it, or in other words, a boyfriend.
"Maddie, I told you a million times," She replied, setting down their luggage. Maddie wandered around. Ugh. Everything was so vintage. And old fashioned. And dirty. There were wall candle holders..with candles in them. And why was everything so...dusty?
She walked over to the leisure room. A cruddy looking piano stood there. A vase of flowers stood on top of it. Maddie neared it. Using her finger, she scooped a little bit of the dust off, but quickly regretted it. As dust filled the whole room, she coughed and waved her hand to discard the ashes.
She looked into the flowers. Sniffed them. They have a scent. Wait, they are real, right? She took a flower out with her fingers. Picked a petal off. Yes, she confirmed it. The flower is real. But how? She remembered her mother told her, this house was old, and abandoned. They moved in because there was no one living in there. And it was the only house they can afford. But..how are the flowers still living? Surely there must me someone watching these flowers.
Wait a second. She heard another voice. Not hers. She looked around, as she cringed a little. What happened? She walked towards the couch, where the soft pink cushions sat. Again, it was covered in a thin layer of grey dust. There was no television, but a cupboard with a radio sitting next to it. And another pot of flower on top of it. Again, fresh. She even noticed the water was clean.
She wandered over to the wall of paintings. There stood 3 paintings. One with a lady in a big pink and white fluffy dress. She was sitting on a stool. Her hair was tied in a really fancy bun with a little too much make up. The next one was a abstract painting, with what Maddie guess, people. She studied them very carefully, until one of them blinked.
Wait. WHAT? They blinked? Now Maddie was certainly very terrified. She let out a thrill, cold shirek, put pulled herself together. Her mouth slowly widen as she saw the painting-the one that blinked-also opened the mouth.
She felt her hand slowly reaching for the painting. She poked it, and it let out a sharp yell "Ow! That was my nose! Stop!" it screamed out. Maddie froze. Her face scrunched up in a frighten look.
"Uh, I mean...nevermind," it added, slowly fading away. It's voice was raw, but also filled with stupidity.
"Oh wait now," another voice chimed in. It was also coming from the painting. And it's voice was more of an adult's voice. "Come out now, Kira and Billy, this girl can see us. It's no use hiding anymore."
"What is going on?" Maddie asked, closing her eyes tightly. 'I'm dreaming, it's not real. I'm dreaming, it's not real' she told herself.
"It's real," says the girl. "We are ghosts. You can see us, because you have the power to. It's like a gift."
"Who are you guys? And what are you doing in my house?" Maddie inquired.
"I'm Kira," says the girl "This is my older brother, Billy, and my dad, Chad," The others nodded. "Oh, and, by the way," Kira added.
Maddie nodded frightfully, as Kira continued.
"We're ghosts."
Chapter 2 -
She's a nightmare dressed like a daydream, Maddie thought. Kira was really pretty,
Maddie stared at Kira. Her hair was transparent, but yet, at the same time, flowy. Kind of like the wind, swiftly swimming through the air. She had fire red eyes. They were burning like ember, looking fierce at Maddie. She was tall. Wearing a short black skirt and cute black tee shirt that said "I don't care" in bright pink letters with a golden, jewel embedded crown on top of it.
"Okay... I understand...But why did you have to hide, if only a handful of people can see you?" Maddie said quietly. It was quite obvious that she was shaking with fear.
"You see, we're ghosts. We're 'bad' people." Billy explained. "So the fairies, the good things, want to get rid of us. You see, fairies and ghosts have the same power. They can morph, do magic, and such. But before, we were all part together. Long story short, we split, because of a fight over something. You know?"
"Uh huh," Maddie answered, bobbing her head up and down. "Fight over what?"
"This..power. You know, the one which will declare who is the king. Anyways, the fairies, they chose a person they want. And us, the ghosts, want another...king. So you see, the fairies won, of course. And they want to hunt all of us down. Like that. Crazy, I know right?"
"Wow, I've never thought that fairies were.." Maddie was cut off by Billy. "Yeah, yeah, we know. 'Bad'," he finishes. "But, yeah. It's just that, everyone assumes that we are bad, because you know, faires, and the magi..."
"Say no more," Maddie tried to pat the ghosts back. But then, she forgetting that ghosts are touch-throughable, she reach out, and fell on the ground, face first.
"Oww," she whined, as she stood up unsteadily. All the ghosts were laughing at her. They were clutching their stomachs, snorting out loud. Maddie stood up obediently. "It's not funny! Stop!" She cried. The ghosts immediately stop. "That's right." Maddie said, crossing her arms. The ghosts didn't move. "Someone is coming. We need to go. Back into the painting." Chad said, snapping his fingers. A dramatic flash before they were gone. Maddie thought to herself: 'What? Where are they?'
A fresh batch of fragrance coming from the place they left. Maddie leaned over to have a better sniff. A strong, natural crisp of rose. For a second, it was there, but when Maddie's mom walked in, it was gone.
"Sweetie! There you are. Don't you just love this place?" Her mother chimed in. Maddie was about to say something, but her mother beat her to it. "Just, uh-Who were you talking to?" She said, while she looked around.
"Uh, no one," Maddie said, giving her a innocent smile. Her mother frowned.
"Myself," Maddie added, before saying anything else. Her mother nodded before raising her voice again.
"Maddie, dear, did you put the pots of flowers here? My, are they incredibly fresh. And they smell good too!"
"Um.." Forcing a smile, she lied and said she had put the flowers there.
"Oh, my little baby sure knows how to make this place more...uh...alive." Maddie quickly looked away.
"Right...Alive..."
Chapter 3 -
"Um, guys? You can come out now, my mother is gone-Oh, and she's NOT a fairy." Maddie yelled out after her mom left.
"Are you sure?." Kira popped out of the painting, stirring towards her. Maddie ignored her question.
"Where's your dad and Billy?" Maddie inquired. Kira shrugged, shaking her head, letting her strike, jet black hair flow.
"Fishing. I know, right?" Kira responded. "I figured I won't go. I mean, sometimes it gets lonely being the only girl in this house."
"So...?" Maddie mumbled awkwardly. Kira stared at her with her mesmerizing, colourless eyes. It was kind of felt like hypnotizing.
"Well, I'd like someone to hang out with," Kira smiled sweetly.
"So, you are saying, you want me to be your friend?" Maddie questioned. Kira nodded. "Yes. One looking after another. Is that okay with you?"
"I'd be delighted to be your friend. Uh, but you are a ghost. What do you need my help with? I mean except for fairies, but like, what can I do?"
Kira pointed at the vase of flowers on top of the dusty piano. "You see the flowers? They are not the normal kind you get at your local flower shop. These are from the land of ghosts. They never die, and they provide ghost life. If they are broken or damaged, the effect does the same to us. We get hurt."
"Oh, but you say they won't die? So you guys won't die, right?" Maddie raised an eyebrow. Kira shook her head and gave a tiny chuckle.
"No, silly. We ghosts are already dead. We just get hurt. You know, like you are about to,"
Before Maddie could react, she was pushed into complete darkness, but just right before, she caught a little smirk from Kira.
"What? Kira?" Maddie managed to yelp out before she was put into a sack. She felt herself being lifted through the air. Maddie opened her mouth to scream, but then she felt a force blocking her mouth opening. The best she can do it muffle through it.
"Told you, dad. I'm a good actress." She heard Kira's high pitched voice squeak.
"You're right, Kira." Billy said, "We do need more people to be ghosts. We need to win the fairies."
Then it all made sense to Maddie. It was a trick. Not the fairy part, but the kindness part. They wanted Maddie DEAD. They wanted Maddie to join them.
She felt herself floating across the room. Her tears started streaming down her face.
"It's time, my children. I'm incredibly pleased with you. Good thinking." She heard Chad say.
She almost immediately felt the heat under her. And the noise. Something was burning. And the smell? Like the how you would cook a chicken and burn it. Maddie finally made sense of it. She was going to die. In fire.
As panic rise, she started screaming harder. The force was no longer there.
"That's right," Kira gushed. Although Maddie can't see her, she knew that Kira was making a smug face. "Say your last words, hun. And burn."
"HELP ME! SAVE ME!" The words fly out of Maddie's mouth like a kid to the presents when it's Christmas. More tears came down. Her eyes start to sting, as her cheek start to flutter with heat.
"Oh, you said them. It's time, dad. Release her!"
She felt the levitation end, and she felt herself dropping. She let out a wild cry. She felt more and more tears. She felt like a rollercoaster going down, 1000 miles per hour. She felt like a chicken being killed, just so it can be eaten. She felt like...
Maddie sat up in her bed, as the sweat started pouring from her head. She also felt something-tears-on her cheek.
Maddie glanced around. It's her new room. Maddie eyed the packed boxes on the floor. It's so empty, with nothing except the ugly, beige coloured boxes and her white mattress on the ground.
'It was a nightmare,' Maddie panted, out of breath. 'It was only just a dream,'
She stood up, wiping her still moist forehead and headed over the toilet. She washed her face and had a little drink of water. Looking in the mirror, she can see how horrible she looks. Her damp, blond hair now looks like a birds nest. Her eyes had big, dark circles around it.
An almost invisible figure appeared in the background. Maddie's eyes opened wide, but she can't do anything. Its hair was black and long. Was it...Kira?
'I'm only seeing stuff. Only seeing stuff.' Maddie told herself, again, and again.
The figure suddenly disappeared.
Then again, she smelt roses. Fresh ones.
Maybe it wasn't a dream at all.
