As I climbed up the hill I have to cover my ears to drown out the sound of death and destruction. I hated seeing my town like that, and it's lucky I had that place, that safety zone. If I didn't have the dip in the hill I would've been dead a long time ago.

The dip in the hill is at the top and is next to the woods, so it's easy to get to without being noticed. As soon as I got to the dip, I took off my backpack. it was compulsory for soldiers to carry these backpacks, they were filled with food and water and weapons. Stuff for survival.

I look over the dip, to the place where I had just been, and looked to the violence and the conflict. I hated everyone being in war, not knowing why, not even knowing who sent us.

There I see children running and screaming, and crying, suddenly realising that if they stay alive, they'll be orphans. I see women running into shops, and walking around with shopping bags, trying their hardest to forget about the war going on around them, doing anything they can to carry on with their lives. And men in green suits, the army uniform, fighting, dying, killing, all for Queen and country. Green vs Blue.

As I watched the dreadful scene unfold, I felt it, the pit of rage and heartbreak and every emotion under the sun. I started in my stomach and spread to every inch of my body and I was ready to scream and cry, and put my gun to my own head, but I turned around.

I turned to see a green field, untouched. Beauty spread across the green abyss that slowly got darker and darker as it turned into forests. I felt calm as I remembered that natural beauty still exists even when something dreadful is happening just on the other side of the hill. I sat down to admire the view when someone pushed me.

"Lucas! You scared me!" I exclaimed as he laughed at me.

Lucas was the exact opposite of me. He was tall with blonde hair, bright green eyes and was the smartest and bravest man I have ever had the fortune to meet. I was small, brunette, cloudy brown eyes, and I got scared very easily.

"Are you alright Benny?" He asked, but I didn't reply.

I couldn't tell him I was scared, he would've laughed in my face and told me to get on with it and forget that you could potentially die at any moment. That's what all the other lads did anyway.

"Benjamin, are you okay?" He asked, sitting next to me.

"Yes." I replied.

"Honestly? You owe me an honestly." He said.

"Honestly: no, I'm scared, I don't want to be here anymore." I said.

"Me too, hey! Benny boy, how about we run away?" he said, jumping up with a grin crossing his face.

"No! We can't! Where would we even go?" I asked.

"Anywhere! But I'd start-" He stopped as he grabbed my hands and pulled me up.

"Over there" He said, pointing over to the trees.

"Oh, I-I don't know." I said, being as scared as always.

"C'mon Ben! Stop thinking about the future! If you stay here, you might not even have one! C'mon, we can make a house in the woods! We can create a life for ourselves. Please Benjamin." He begged.

"Okay." I said with a hesitant smile.

"Really! Lets go!" He said.

We both grabbed our bags, but when we turned back around, that's when everything changed.

"Which way?" He asked.

"Erm, that way!" I said, pointing to the left hand side of the field, where you could see the sun at sunset through the trees.

"That way it is then." He said with a smile.

I looked at him, to make sure he was sure he wanted to do this, but that's when I saw the horror on his face. When I looked back I saw that the tranquil land of the green had turned into the marching band of the Blue.

"No! How? They can't have! Oh my go- Benjamin I need to tell you something.. I-"

BANG!

Bullet to the brain. I didn't quite understand what had happened until it was too late, like always. One minute he was running away, the next he's on the floor, dead.

I could've moved him. I could've said goodbye! I should've shot back! I should've given the rest of them the warning! I should have gotten revenge for Lucas, but what did I do? I did what I always do.. The original plan.. What cowards do... I ran.
