Fake it for Happiness
(Thank you to auideas for this AU ^-^ There are actually a lot of good AUs on there so there might be more from this person.)
I looked over at my best friend, she looked back at me. "Okay, so I'm going to pretend to date you so that it makes my parents happy, and you'll pretend to date me so that you can win this bet that you're in... except... I think that I actually kind of like you..." I told her, blushing near the end. "Well, if we do this, you better not fall in love." She told me with a laugh. "Alright, I'll try not to." I laughed back.
We waited for a few more minutes in the car parked in front of my parents house. Both our families would be there for a celebration of Kelsey getting accepted into her dream college. I let out a breath, "You ready?" I asked her. "Yeah." She said. "Then here goes nothing." I say and we both open the doors to the car and start walking towards the front door. She grabs my hand and intertwines our fingers together, my heart pounds but I shake it off.
The door was opened when we were halfway there and my little sister stood in the doorway. "Damion!" She called out my name as loud as she could so the people in the house could hear. As soon as we approached the door, Kelsey and I were surrounded by family members. My mother hugged Kelsey tightly and Kelsey's mother hugged me tightly both exclaiming that they haven't seen us in forever. "Thanks, Mrs. Free, for the hug. I know, it's been forever." I laugh a bit and she lets go of me.
We all went back inside to celebrate. It came time to eat the food so we all sat down beside one another, Kelsey sat in between me and her older sister. We were served steak that my father cooked with sides of our choosing. "So, Kelsey, congratulations for getting into Harvard. That's a hard school to get into." My mother congratulated her. "Thank you, I know I was elated when I received the letter of acceptance." She smiled and continued to cut her steak into small bites. "Well, with a school like that, I would be too!" Mom laughed.
"Damion, have you chosen which college you want to go to yet?" Mom asks me. "Yeah, I think I'll go to UCLA." I answered and took a bite of my steak so I wouldn't have to answer anymore questions. A few moments pass as we all talked about things and ate our food. "Kelsey, have you got a boyfriend yet?" Cameron, Kelsey's older sister, asks. "Actually, yes. I do." She answers with a smirk on her face. "Oh yeah? Do I know this boy?" Cameron asks.
"I'd hope you know him since he's sitting right beside me." Kelsey says while smiling. "Wait, you two are dating?" Both my mother and her father ask at the same time. "Yes, we are." I answer. "Oh that's great! And with such a fine young lady!" My mother bursts out with excitement. "Yes, you've definitely got a good taste." My father says happily. "You'd better know not to break her heart, though." Kelsey's father warns playfully. "Don't worry, I won't. She's too good to let go." I respond. 'In fact, she's out of my league which is why I can't let her go.' I though to myself.
We all finished our dinner, talking aimlessly and laughing with each other. Kelsey and I were talking on the couch alone while everyone mingled. Cameron came up to us and she clapped slowly. "I never thought you were actually gonna date him. Guess I have to pay you thirty bucks, huh?" She laughed nervously. "That's right, now pay up." Kelsey said and laughed a bit. "Alright, alright." Cameron said and pulled out thirty dollars from her wallet. Kelsey took the money happily and put it in her pocket. Cameron walked away to talk with my little sister and her mom.
"So, I guess, when this is over then we'll be 'just friends', huh?" I asked her. "Well, I don't know. During dinner, I was thinking about how it would be if we really were dating and I was wondering if I should just really date you. But... I don't know. I don't want us to break up someday and then we never feel the same around each other. I don't want it to be awkward, you know?" She told me. "I understand. We don't have to date if you don't want to and I'll respect your decision." I tell her and smile. "I know and thank you for that. You really are the perfect best friend and boyfriend that I could have." She smiles at me.
