Can I help you?

(Thanks to auideas for this AU)

"Ok, mom, bye." I said to my mom through the phone. She has been calling me a lot recently talking about the new cat she just bought. "Oh, alright. Goodbye, Noah. I love you." She said. "I love you too, mom." I said and hung up. I sighed. She could just walk over, she doesn't live that far away. Just as I thought I would finally get some peace and quiet, the doorbell rang. "Ugh... What now?" I groan to myself and walk to the door.

When I opened the door I saw an asian woman who looked to be in her early twenties. She had long black hair that stopped mid upper arm. Her eyes were a familiar looking brown color. "Can I help you?" I asked her. "Uh, yeah, I just moved in-" She examined my face, "You look.... familiar..." She said slowly.

I started to get a bit uncomfortable with all her staring. "Wait!" She exclaimed, which made me jump. "Are you, by any chance, Noah Walsh?" She asked. "Uhh... Yeah?" I answered a bit nervously. "How do you know my name?" I asked. "Oh, yeah you probably don't recognize me. Haha." She laughed a bit. "It's me, Ayame. Ayame Yamada? Ring any bells?" She tried to get me to remember. "The name is familiar but you don't look the same at all..." I said to her.

"I know." She said with a sad smile. "I changed a lot. But, hey, I'm back!" She smiled a more genuine smile to me. It's been two years and I forgotten about my best friend... How sad. "I see you haven't changed your dirty blonde hair at all." She laughed. "Haha yeah, it's still the same old blonde hair." I smiled a bit and she messed with my hair. "So... Can I come in...?" She asked. "Oh! Yeah, sure, come on in." I said and stepped aside.

She walked in and looked around. "The living room is that way." I pointed to the living room and we both sat down on a couch. "Nice place." She says. "Thanks, I got it a few months ago. I like it better than in my old place." I say. "I'd love to live here, too. It's actually really nice." She laughs a bit, "But I've got my own place a few houses down."

"Oh, really? So that's why you were at my door, huh?" I questioned. "Yeah, I was trying to greet all my neighbors and I just so happened to find you! I guess miracles really do exist." Her words trail off a bit and sound sad for a moment. "Are.... Are you ok?" I ask. "Yeah, I'm alright. I'm just going through a bit of a break up." She said nervously.

"Ah, ok. Well, don't think too much about it." I said, "You'll be over it soon and find another person who will love you better than the guy you were with. I'm sure of it." She smiled at me, "Thanks, Noah. You're always so supportive." I smiled back at her. She's still so pretty, still so sensitive and all her words are still so heartfelt. She really is the same but she just looks different.

"Your green eyes are always so full of hope, it's weird." She laughs a bit. I hadn't noticed I was staring at her until she talked. "Oh, I'm sorry. It's just kinda weird to see you after two years." I said nervously. "It's fine." She smiles.

"Speaking of eyes, yours are still so full of happiness. Even now." I say. "I guess they are, huh? I'm just a very optimistic person, you should be able to know that." She says and looks around the room. I know what she's thinking of right now. She wants something to drink. "Uh, why don't I get you a drink?" I ask. "Or... I could come with you so that next time you don't have to treat me like a stranger and more like your best friend!" She says with a bit of sass. "Alright, alright. Follow me then." I say and walk her to the kitchen.

She opens the fridge and I grab her a cup. She takes out the milk carton and pours in into the cup. "Where do you keep all the cups?" She asks, I point her to the cabinet and she nods. After putting the milk away, she hops up onto the counter and sits there, sipping her cup of milk and her legs dangling from the floor. "Still a shortie, I see." I mock her. "Shut up." She rolls her eyes. "That's alright. I like them short anyways." I shrug. "What's that supposed to mean?" She asks. "Nothing." I shrug once more and we both laugh.

I hear her say something under her breath. "What?" I ask. "What?" She asks. "What did you say?" I ask her. "Nothing, you're hearing things." She says and her cheeks turn pink. "Is that so?" I question, "So I'm going crazy?" She looks away, "No... You're not going crazy, you're just hearing things. That kind of stuff happens, alright?" She protests. "Still as stubborn as ever." I chuckle.

"I'm not stubborn!" She exclaims. "Yes, you are." I say, "You were always stubborn." She hops down and steps in front of me. "If you're not stubborn, you would've told me what you muttered under your breath." I smirk. Her face turns pink as she looks into my eyes. I feel my heart beat faster. "Ok, fine!" She gives up, "I said...."

I tilt my head in question, staring at her. "You said...?" I ask. "I said... You're still cute." She looks away. "Is that all?" I ask. She turns back to me. "Yes! That's all!" She says loudly. "That wasn't what I was expecting, though. Usually it's something more extreme..." I say. "You've gotten more shy, haven't you?" I ask. "Yes... People are idiots, apart from you of course." She says, "I can't stand being around them but I also can't seem to talk to them without being scared."

"What are you scared of? You seem to talk to me just fine." I asked. "That's because I knew you since we were kids! It's different." Her words trailed off again. "How so?" I ask. "Because...." She starts. "Never mind, it's not important."

"No, please, tell me." I say. "If you want us to be best friends again, we have to share things like we used to." She looks into my eyes and my heart rate speeds up again. "Because.... I..... I-" She starts and her face turns red, "I love you..." She finishes talking slowly and looks away. My heart speeds up a bit more when I take a breath to speak, "Well, Ayame, I... Love you, too." I said and my cheeks heated up.

Her head turned to me quickly and she grabbed my hands. She smiled warmly at me and I pulled her closer. We hugged for a while before letting go. Both of us lost in each others eyes before our faces leaned in. When our lips touched, it felt like electric sparks. My heart felt like it was going to burst. I think this might be the start of something new, something great. I promise I won't ever let you go.
