Open Letter

This is a letter I wrote for a school assignment. I worked on it for a pretty long time and I'm proud of how it turned out.

Dear Vice President Kamala Harris,

There are many problems in today's world, but one tremendous issue impacts half our population on a worldwide scale and needs to be addressed. Sexism. Today's world isn't fair, and females are at the losing end of this battle. You of all people should be aware of this and understand the need to address this problem.

Women's skills and rights are respected less than men's. Females are undervalued and "Blocked from important decisions, dismissed and ignored." There are abundant amounts of stereotypes to show that females are weaker or under-proficient. Many hurdles must be overcome to accomplish the same level of success as a man, usually working extra hours, doing strenuous research, and frequently, it will be the man to get the promotion or substantial benefit. Would you want to be treated like an insignificant, exempted from rights that others have Mrs. Harris?

Women are not given the commendation that they earn. Females are offered fewer chances to thrive and are still frequently the ones to suffer. Today, ⅔ of illiterates are women. Women are offered 84% of what men receive. Most politicians and government authorities are men. Women are seldom seen as the superior force in the primary functions of the world today, and without equal representation, the nature of our society is warped and partisan.

As someone who will grow up in the real world with these circumstances, as someone who along with you, has already experienced these scenarios, I know that the world we live in today isn't equitable. Women are capable of the same things as men. Whether it be subtle as someone wrinkling up their face and saying "But you're a girl!" Or more painfully obvious such as in the media, in which women are noticeably victimized ranging from body stereotypes to underrepresentation. So many people are excluded, and taken advantage of because of something we were never able to control. As stated by Thomas Jefferson "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal." There have been advocates for change for hundreds of years, but have we done anything to make all women equal?

Who knows if it will happen in your lifetime, or a few hundred decades from now, but to make a change, we should just treat everyone as equals. Don't disrespect or look down on others, whether it be in that group project or out on the streets. We may look different, but at the end of the day, at the end of life, all people are equal. If everyone could just understand this and see it from the same perspective, we would live in a better society today.

Sincerely,

Christina
