It was an eerily silent night and Amy was alone in her apartment. She had just finished watching a horror movie and was feeling a bit spooked. She decided to call her best friend, Sarah, to calm her nerves.
As she dialed Sarah's number, she noticed that the phone was acting strangely. The screen flickered and the buttons didn't respond properly. Just as she was about to give up, the call went through.
"Hey, Sarah, it's Amy. Are you there?"
There was no answer.
"Sarah? Can you hear me?"
Still, there was no response. Amy thought it might be a bad connection and decided to hang up. But as she tried to end the call, she realized that she couldn't. The phone seemed to be stuck, and the screen had turned black.
Suddenly, she heard a strange noise coming from the other end of the line. It was a low, raspy breathing that made her skin crawl.
"Who's there?" she asked, her voice shaking.
There was a moment of silence, and then the breathing stopped. A deep, menacing but somehow a warm voice spoke.
"I've been waiting for you, Amy. Whatever you do, don't open the door."
Amy's heart skipped a beat. The voice sounded familiar, but she couldn't place it. She tried to stay calm and asked, "Who are you?"
The voice chuckled and suddenly, the phone went dead. Amy was left in complete darkness, with only the sound of the rain tapping against the window to keep her company. She tried to call Sarah back, but the phone wouldn't respond.
As she sat there in fear, she heard a strange sound coming from outside her apartment door. It was a scratching noise, like someone was trying to force their way in. Amy's mind raced with terrifying thoughts. Was someone trying to break in? Was it the same person who had called her on the phone?
She mustered up the courage to go to the door and look through the peephole. What she saw made her blood run cold. A figure in a dark cloak was standing outside, staring straight at her. Its eyes glowed in the darkness, and its mouth twisted into a sinister smile.
Amy backed away from the door, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew she had to get out of there, but she didn't know how. She can't leap from the window as she stays on the 5th floor. She tried the phone again, but it was still dead.
Just then, she heard a voice whisper in her ear. "You can't escape me, Amy."
She turned around, but there was no one there. She was completely alone. But she had a notion that whatever the creature was outside, was the one that just whispered.
Amy knew that she was in grave danger. She had to think fast if she wanted to survive the night. She grabbed a kitchen knife and made her way towards the door knowing very well the knife might not help her at all. She knew that she had to confront whatever was outside, even if it meant risking her life.
As she opened the door, she saw the figure in the cloak again. It reached out towards her she held up the knife, ready to defend herself.
Just then, the figure disappeared into thin air. Amy was left standing there, knife in hand, completely bewildered.
It wasn't until later that she realized what had happened. The phone call had been a warning, a message from the other side. The figure in the cloak was a spirit, a vengeful ghost that had been haunting her apartment for years as per the story the landlord said before selling her that.
Amy knew that she had narrowly escaped death that night. From then on, she made sure to always keep her phone close, just in case the spirits decided to call again to warn her.
