The azure sky, streaked with white, fluffy clouds peered down at the vast, sprawling mountains and glittering cerulean lakes. Distant birds chirped, a faint, pleasant breeze blew, and the sun shone warmly on the peaceful landscape that stretched from horizon to horizon. Noon was passing, and everything was alight with a cheerful welcoming light.

This altogether pleasant atmosphere sadly did not reflect on the two travelers toiling across the high ridged mountains. In fact, it rather put their situation in an ironic, almost comical light.

"It's hot. And dusty. And sticky, and buggy and hot and horrible and hot and did I mention, hot?"

"You did, in fact, so do me a favor and shut up."

Traveler Number 1 scrunched her snout and scowled in her companion's direction. Then she purposefully whacked him with her tail.

"HEY!"

Traveler Number 2 snarled and leapt forward, snapping his mouth open to bite the offending limb in front of him.

With a yelp, Traveler Number 1 skidded away, barely avoiding the razor sharp teeth of Traveler Number 2. "That wasn't funny, Cierzo! You could have bitten my tail clean off!"

"Yes, I am very aware of my intentions, thank you," Cierzo snapped.

Unfortunately, this little spat did nothing other than raise the two travelers' tempers.

"Ughh I can't believe we're not allowed to fly. I mean, we're dragons! We have wings! We FLY, not WALK up a mountain to reach some old sacred shrine to find an old magic dragon's treasure!" Traveler Number 1 complained loudly.

"I'm pretty sure you shouldn't say that. The only reason we're walking and not flying is because we need to appear humble and less strong than the 'old magic dragon' so we can access the treasure in the first place."

"Humph."

The two proceeded to trudge along in silence. They were both hot and sticky as neither of them were used to the humid forest air. Cierzo was quite glad his overly expressive friend had opted for the quiet way.

A few moments later Traveler Number 1 opened her mouth indignantly.

"I can't believe we have to do this! It's completely ridiculous!! We had solid, considerate, protesting words of speech firmly stating that we didn't want to do this!"

"HoneyBeam, I'm pretty sure 'yippee! sign me up!' isn't solid, considerate, or protesting," Cierzo commented wryly.

HoneyBeam chose to ignore him.

The next two hours dragged along with much more snapping, huffing and complaining, with Cierzo doing the snapping and HoneyBeam doing the complaining for the most part.

Finally, dripping with sweat and gasping for air, both travelers arrived at the entrance to the ancient animus lair.

"Alright, now that we're here we can take a short break," Cierzo sighed, resting his tired limbs on the nearby cool grass as dignantly as possible.

Beam flopped down in the middle of the road and stayed there, impersonating an exhausted black and amber puddle.

After Cierzo managed to catch his breath, he got up to examine the crumbing stone gates before him. The gates stood resolutely in the middle of the road; tall, imposing, and alone. In fact, the gates were the only thing sticking up high over the trees that looked to be made by dragon claws. The path abruptly stopped and beyond the gates was nothing but wilderness. No walls connected the edges of the gates. No path led onward. Just a set of old gates guarding nothing in the middle of a forest.

"Woowwww creepy!" Beam had finally heaved herself up and had come to investigate as well. Cierzo grunted and let her peer through the gate bars curiously. Her eyes widened. "No sane dragon is gonna willingly go through this creepy thing!"

Cierzo waited.

"We have to go in there, don't we?" Beam eventually ventured.

"Yep."

Beam sighed. "Oh well, let's get this over with."

Flicking a wing at Cierzo, Beam cautiously crept through an opening in the gates. Nothing seemed to happen. Beam looked back at Cierzo, unusual uncertainty crossing her round face.

Steeling his nerves, Cierzo followed Beam's path and slipped through the opening.
