Riley's tale of the Opposite Gender one shot

This is my idea of an epilogue of the story. I tried with it and i think it turned out pretty well, i really liked writing it!  i hope u guys like it. Dedicated to one of my fave authors and only creator of this story: @Cappucinos! Shes an awesome writer.

Two years later:

Walking through the local Starbucks around my campus, I ordered my usual and waited for my friend, Mandy, to meet me. I got a booth instead of a table just to look out the window of people walking in a walking by. Coming back home was really bittersweet but I’m glad I came back, seeing all my old friends who I missed so much.

I got a scholarship to attend U of T, Mandy did too and we live in the same dorm building on the same floor. I got the chance to finish my senior year and go to summer school to make some credits that I missed so I could go to University on time. My parents were so happy and proud that I got into uni.

My roommate, Sam, is nice but blunt sometimes. When I first met her in the year, she told me that she lived in Winnepeg but got accepted to Toronto. I told her I lived in Toronto and Vancouver, she asked why and I told her just to stay with a family friend. I didn’t go on with all the details with what happened to me and she didn’t ask any more questions.

We just talked about our families and what hobbies we liked, I found out she likes reading ‘The Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series, because I do too. We’ve been roommates for two years now. I didn’t want to tell her and then she would feel sorry for me, while I start to dwell into sadness. There were some good things that happened when I was there, like Peyton and Amy who I still skype with, but then the bad things too like almost dying. I hate thinking about it and getting nightmares.

My mom still suggested therapy but I told her that I was fine and I could deal with on my own with more sleep. I did get over it eventually and could be able to start school with a clean state. As I waited for Mandy while sipping my coffee, I felt my phone vibrate saying ‘new text message’. I opened it and it read that Mandy will be here in five minutes and that I should order her a mochachinno.

I sighed tiredly since it was ten am and she wanted us to chat here saying ‘we haven’t seen each other in forever!’ But I told her that ‘we live in the same building and have three classes together.’ She waved it off and told me that we should hang more. She does have a point; college is fun but can be exhausting with all the exams and projects on power point. I don’t even go to the parties like I used to, only three when I arrived here.

Now I’m in my sophomore year and I need to buckle down so I don’t let my GPA slip. I got up and waited in line, it was only three people so I felt glad and that Mandy won’t come and complain that her coffee is cold. “Hi, can I get a grande mochachinno please?” I told the barista. “Sure and the name?” she responded. “Mandy.” She wrote the name on the Styrofoam cup and told me that it will be out in a minute.

“Hi, Riley.” That voice sounded so familiar to me, husky and deep. I take a deep breathe to await what face matches the voice of the guy I haven’t seen in two years.

“Mason. Hi.”

“Hi.” I gave him a small smile but I was still nervous seeing him. Holding a coffee in his hand, he grins at me. He still looked the same but it seems that he grew out his hair, it looked shaggier and he grew a beard. Like a five o’ clock shadow and it looked really good on him. He looks really good.

“Riley” my train of thought was broken when I looked into his eyes and saw confusion.

“Huh?”

“You kind of blanked out for a moment.”

“Oh, sorry” I gave a sheepish laugh. “Just thinking.”

“How are you anyway?”

“I’m good, college can be tiring but it’s worth it to get a degree. What about you?”

“I’ve been good. I go to school back home but I’m just visiting a friend here so yeah.”

“Really? Just you?”

“No, Vincent’s with me.”

“Cool.” This is so awkward right now; a customer was getting impatient with us holding the line so we moved while waited for the coffee order. I shuffled uncomfortably and looked everywhere instead of Mason so I don’t blurt anything I would regret.

“You waiting for someone?” He asked breaking the silence.

“Yeah, I am.”

“A boyfriend?” What? Why would he say that?

“No my friend.”

“Oh.”

“Girlfriend?” I hope he says no. “Macy, but we broke up last week.” “Oh.”

“I miss you, Riley.”

“I miss you too, Mason.” I thought those feelings that I had for him would be gone if I didn’t talk to him anymore but seeing him here and they start to come back.

“You stopped calling” he told me.

“I know, I thought it would be best for us.” “Best for us or best for you?”

“Both.”

“Well I do mean what I said to you in the hospital, you are the one good thing that happened to me.”

“You were too.” I couldn’t help but smile at this. He smiled too, his smile makes me still melt. But I can’t do this with him, he said so himself that he’s damaged. But we can try. It’s not like I waited for him when I left. I’ve dated three guys who I really liked but there was no spark, not like with Mason. I opened my mouth to say something but I hear the barista’s voice saying Mandy’s name.

I turn to get the coffee but another hand grabs it and I see that it’s Mandy. “Thanks so much for ordering, Riles! I’ll pay you back as soon as I-“ she cuts off what she is saying and glances at who is behind me, which is Mason.

“Hello. Is this Mason? Hi, I’m Mandy” she gives a toothy smile to him. “Hi, I am. Nice to finally meet you, Mandy.”

“You too. Riley, you were right he is gorgeous.” My best friend, ladies and gentleman: making me more nervous than ever.

“It’s nice to know that you talk about me, Riles.” Mason joked. I just rolled my eyes at this when they both laughed.

“Excuse me girls” he says as he reached for the phone and put it in his ear.

“You should let him sit with us” Mandy said.

“No, I don’t want him to.”

“Come on. You know you want him to. You were talking about how much you wish that he show up in your life again and here he is.” “Mandy, stop. He’s not staying long anyway.” Mandy pouted and shook her head, we both turned our way to get to our table but Mason blocked us.

“It looks like I’m leaving.”

“Oh, well it was real nice seeing you.”

“You too.”

“Bye.”

“Bye.” He makes his way to the door and I turn to get my seat. I should have told him to stay but I’m too much of a coward to tell him how I feel. Maybe I can-

“Riley!” I hear my name being called by him. “We can try, you know, with us. Just call and I can come back.” He exits the coffee place, I couldn’t help but feel so much butterflies in my stomach. We can try. It looks like my story can continue and end with him.
