All I Want For Christmas
I watched the snow fall from behind my window and wondered where he would be.
Jason, my boyfriend for 6 years, was a soldier in the army. He was send on a peace mission in Afghanistan, but I knew it could get rough there.
It was Christmas Eve and I missed him terribly. Ever since our relationship started we made sure we celebrated the Holidays together, but this year he wrote me a letter and explained he would most likely not make it home before Christmas.
So here I sat in front of my window, next to the tree, watching the snow fall. I sighed, tomorrow I would have dinner with his parents and the day after with mine. But without him, it didn't seem so appealing to eat dinner with the whole family.
With a heavy sigh I stood up to make myself some tea. As I put the kettle on my phone rang. I looked at the ID and saw the name of my best friend Ashley.
"Evelyn, you boring little girl, where are you honey?" She asked and I sighed. On the background I heard loud music and people laughing, of course she would be at a party on Christmas Eve.
"Hey Ashley, I'm at home, the real question is where are you?" I asked her with a laugh.
"HOME?! How can you be at home all by yourself at Christmas Eve?!" She yelled in my ear. "Stay there, I'll be at your place in fifteen minutes."
"No Ash, really I'm fine. I'd like to stay home tonight. I'll see you the 31st." I told her quickly.
"Fine, as long as you're not going to sit all by yourself with a cup of tea while thinking about Jason." She said stern. I promised her I wouldn't although that was exactly what I was going to do and hung up.
I poured myself a cup of tea and went back to my place on the couch. I looked outside and thought of how we had said goodbye four months ago.
"I'll be back before you know it." He said tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.
We were at the airport and it wouldn't be long before I had to step out of his warm embrace.
"But I'll miss you so much." I said. It wasn't the first time he would leave me for a few months, but every time he left it felt like the first time again.
"Promise you'll be back for Christmas." He chuckled at my pout and kissed me on the forehead.
"What do you want for Christmas then? Can I bring you a present?" He asked caressing my cheek.
I smiled and looked up at him. "All I want for Christmas is you." He laughed and pulled me closer. We both sighed and as I pulled back a little his lips landed on mine.
It was a tender yet passionate kiss and I knew it meant 'I'll miss you'. As he let go of me I felt cold and alone even though he was still right in front of me.
"I've got to go now, my love. I'll be back." And with one quick kiss he turned around and joined the rest of his group. We waved until we couldn't see each other any more.
I got pulled back in the present when my stomach growled like a tiger.
I looked at the time and saw it was nearing 7 pm and I had no idea what to make myself for dinner. I looked at what I had in house and decided to make a simple pasta with tomato sauce.
To get the Christmas feeling in house I put on some Christmas music, poured myself a glass of wine and started cooking while humming along.
I totally lost myself in the music and the memories they recalled. We would always sing along to Baby, it's cold outside and act it out as well.
Instead of missing him, it seemed as if he was near me. As if he was close to me and singing along with me to the songs that filled the house. It made me happy.
When I was happy with the sauce and the pasta was perfectly cooked I put it all on a plate for myself and sat down on the couch, not in the mood to sit at the table all by myself.
I enjoyed my pasta and reread his last letter. It wasn't the one in which he briefly said he couldn't make it home before Christmas and apologized. But the one he had send after.
My dearest Evelyn,
I miss you, so much
I can't express in words how much
Neither can I express in words
How much I love you, and only you
How much I desire you in my arms
How much I ache to hear your voice
But I can't, you're literally on the other side of the world.
And yet you're not, because you're my world.
I don't need anything else but you in this life and after.
You know there is mot much to do here, so I started to read.
Yes, I did as you asked and started with Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet.
So, this is for you;
My bounty is as boundless as the sea
My love as deep
The more I give to thee
The more I have
For both are
Infinite
I love you Eve,
Yours forever,
Jason
I smiled. Last time I read it I started crying, but now I smiled and with that smile still plastered on my face I got another call, which I answered without looking at the caller ID.
"Evelyn, darling, how are you?" My smile widened a bit more at the sound of Jason's mom.
"Hilda! I'm absolutely fine, how are you?" I asked her and she chuckled.
"Im very well, looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. Tell me how was your day thus far?"
"I have been reading, daydreaming, writing a little and so on. Just now I made myself some pasta and I'm still dancing on Christmas songs. Also I have just reread Jason's last letter and it made me smile." I told her while looking out the window once more.
I listened to what she was saying while watching the street in front of my house. I only noticed I hadn't really paid attention until she said:
"Oh, before I end this call, we send you an early Christmas present. It should arrive this evening."
"Wait, what? Hilda you shouldn't have." I said a bit confused.
"Oh no darling, you deserve it. Now, Harold really wants me back on the couch to watch this show about nature on the tv. I'll see you tomorrow!" And with that she hung up.
A present, at this time? I shook my head, maybe she was mistaken, or maybe they delivered until late at night to make sure everyone had their Christmas presents on time.
I was about to go back to my lovely place on the couch and continue my book when there was another knock on the door. It was pretty late, I wondered if it were more carol singers, or maybe it was indeed Hilda's present.
I opened the door, but there was nobody outside. I frowned and took a few steps into the snow which crunched under my feet. I looked around, but there was really nobody.
As I wanted to turn around to strong arms encircled me from behind and I got pressed against a firm and all too familiar body.
"Merry Christmas, Eve." Jason whispered in my ear. I gasped and turned around in his arms. He smirked down at me and I threw my arms around him.
"You're here, you're really here!" I mumbled against his shoulder. He chuckled and lifted me up and brought me inside.
However I had no time to take in his sudden arrival because he shut me up before I could say anything else.
"Im about to do the cheesiest thing ever, but you're gonna love it." He said as he dropped his backpack. He turned towards the stereo and pressed play when he had found the right song.
On the first notes of All I Want For Christmas he sank on one knee and pulled a box out of his pocket.
"My dearest Eve, I love you, there's nothing more to it. I wanted to ask you this for a long time, but I was never sure. When you said you wanted me for Christmas, I finally knew how I would ask you this. Because all I want for Christmas and for the rest of my life, is you. Therefore I am asking you to be my wife."
And I looked down at him, the man I loved and would always love. I grabbed his hands an looked him in the eye.
"Yes"
