Born Immune
On February 10th 2001 a virus broke out in eastern America. It took many lives, the disgusting disease traveling through the vents and windows of homes and vehicles. It was unlike anything scientist and doctors had seen within the past. Whose who had contact with the virus seemed to die, only to arise from they're death like state no longer humans. They fed on the flesh of those alive, they're cannibalistic mannerisms traveling from state to state, country to country until very little humans were remaining.
A safe place well known was within a hospital west of Texas, more than 30 men and women working together to keep those still alive safe. One of these civilians was a man by the name of Professor Graham Kenway, his knowledge of the situation comforting but yet so frightening as there seemed to be no cure for this virus him and his men created. The people of America had no choice but to await they're fates.
On April 1st of the same year, a family joined the people within the hospital, a young couple expecting a child. The parsons had been hiding the virus out in they're home, blocking each door and window with what furniture they had left as they were in the process of moving. As it was expected Johnathan and Amelia Parson were searched, the people not willing to allow those infected to live. A bite wound was found quickly on the young woman's arm, it crusted over with new skin as though nothing more than a simple accident. Professor Graham was quickly assigned to the couples needs, no one seeming to understand why Amelia's wound was not red and inflamed like those before her. The couple was separated, Johnathon forced into a cell, as Amelia was taken to the lab on the basement level of the hospital. The professor feared the virus had indeed entered her system but had instead taking the life of her unborn child...but that was not the case. Upon inspecting the baby, her heart was beating healthy, no sign of the infection within the woman's body nor her child. This confused the professor, his encounters with the infected in the prior months nothing like Amelia's mystery recovery. He had no choice but to allow her and her husband to remain within the facility.
The people were torn, some scared that the professor had made a terrible mistake whilst others treated the couple with kindness. Due to the chaos among the people, Amelia was kept separate from the others, her husband coming daily to visit his beloved within the lab. Though it was not an ideal environment for a baby to be born into, at least she was alive and well...however that may not last.
In the silence of the night, whilst the people sleep, Professor Kenway performs actions that very well may take the life of this child...
As Amelia too sleeps, Graham stands aside her injecting deadly amounts of the virus into her system. He treats her as though a test subject, curious and bewildered that she survives each dose he gives. Each morning she awakens with bruises upon her arm, the professor immediately filling her head with lies that perhaps the virus is fighting to take her body. She does not question him.
Months pass, the hospitals supplies often stocked up by the bravest of people who scout for supplies on a daily basis. Amelia remains within the lab, her labour approaching sooner than anticipated. The professor smiles cheerfully each morning, lying not only to her, but Johnathan, his mind now tainted with power over the woman who seems to be immune.
On the morning of July 20th, a scream from within the lab sends all into a frenzy, fearing that one of the undead had found a way into they're sanctuary. Each man rushes to the sources of panic, soon finding Amelia crouching low, tears soaking her bloated cheeks. The time had come. Johnathan rushes to his wives side, her arms wrapping around him as she asks for help to arise. He obliges, holding her close to him as he sits her upon a table, shouting with determination for someone to fetch Graham. He comes quickly, insisting all, including Johnathon leave the room. Though he does not want to leave his wife, he foolishly trusts the professors wishes.
Once alone, Amelia pleads for pain relief, the professor's smile comforting but his intentions not. He reaches for another dose of the virus, injecting the young woman once more with the cruel disease.
For hours the madman stands aside her, and though she continues to ask for pain medication, she does not receive it. Stressed filled and in severe pain, Amelia passes out, now unable to deliver her baby vaginally. The professor takes actions into his own hands, reaching without permission of her husband for a scalpel and plunging it into her stomach. She remains unconscious, unaware that Graham was now gazing into the glazed over eyes of her baby. He lays the baby close by, quickly and clumsily stitching the young mother's stomach up. He takes a hold of the child once more, and walks calmly down the corridor, smiling as though nothing has happened as he places the baby girl into her fathers arms. Johnathan asks for his wife, the professor insisting he waits no more than an hour, for she shall be awake then. He agrees.
Graham soon returns to the lab, his reaching for the virus now seeming so normal to him that his body does it naturally. He punctures Amelia's arm one more time and sits upon a stool to await her awakening. His eyes grow heavy, her labour preventing him from sleeping. But as his lids begin to close, Amelia's hand begins to twitch. He stands from the stool, preparing to lie all over again...but he is not given the chance...
Amelia springs from the table, saliva dripping from the corners of her mouth whilst her eye's beam a deep red. Graham does not understand, his prior injections always shielded by her immune system. She rushes at him, a squeal so deafening he covers his ears as he runs for the door, shutting and locking it with one swift movement. "What could have gone wrong?" he thinks to himself. His experiment has backfired and now he has put each civilian within the hospital in danger including his own children. He moves quickly through the corridor, meeting with the people halfway as they heard the commotion. Johnathan presses for answers, still holding his daughter in his arms...and then it hits Graham..."Of course...it makes sense now" It was never Amelia that was immune to the virus...but instead her child. He takes the child from Johnathan, talking quietly as the people watch pure insanity take over his brown eyes.
"Your wife is of the undead Mr. Parson...but your child...she is gifted..." The professor speaks, entirely unaware that Johnathan had now rushed past him, needing to see with his own eyes..the fate of his wife. His cries are drowned out by Amelia's weight colliding with the door, the glass shattering and a bullet being sent directly between her eyes. She drops, blood messily flowing from the back of her head as Johnathan embraces her limp body. Amelia Parson was no more. Though her death was unexpected, not one man nor woman questioned the Professors actions within the room, everyone believing her original bite is the reason for her passing...Graham had gotten away with his crime...but little did he know the child would hold much more than immunity.
The year is now 2018, the month July. Today that very baby reaches the age of seventeen, the name Quinn given to her by Johnathan who now ages beyond forty. She young girl has barely seen the light of day, her years spent locked within the same Laboratory that her mothers life was ended...and she too gets injected on a regular basis. Unlike her mother nor father, Quinn's eye's are ocean blue, the black that should be within her eyes non-existent. Her body, though young, is covered with self made tattoo's, her time often spent cutting herself and smearing ink from pens onto the wounds. Today she will tested again...a test inhuman but something she has had to endure from childhood.
She is taken from the lab in cuffs, her father by her side but the remaining survivors keeping they're distance. They place her outside, releasing her wrists and retreat back within safety, Professor Graham and her father being the only two who watch on from the windows. The undead smell the air, all eyes meeting with Quinn as she takes stance. They rush her, swift movements and her knife skills allowing her to kill each beast that comes her way, until not one is left alive within view. She has grown strong by instinct, her small frame now being used as humans protectors...and perhaps she shan't ever be anything more.
