The Road Less Travelled - JustWriteBits

The wind blew through the forest causing the young man to look up in wonder. It had been nearly been three days since he had felt a cool chill in the warm air.

“Robert Frost...”

Robert’s eyes flicked back down to the ground, looking for the distant voice that had echoed through the trees. However, no matter how hard he tried, the figure was nowhere near. Only a strangely large, black feline with a white patch on its broad chest. It's green eyes glued to the teen as its tail twitched in agitation as if it had more important things to do in so little time.

“Robert Frost…”

Once more the boy's eyes flickered across the forest for some unknown figure, only to come back to the dog-sized house cat. The twitch of its tail movements becoming more of a flinch and a swish as opposed to a twitch or tap.

Robert shook his head, rubbing his eyes to see if the beast was truly there or if his little foray into the forest had gotten to him. The villagers had warned him that the forest often made people go mad. So maybe he was simply going crazy. “That cat can't be the one talking to me… I’ve gone completely nuts. It's probably just a figment of my imagination… right?”

“Or perhaps your a figment of mine,” The feminine voice snapped making Robert open his dark blue eyes. The feline now standing no more then a foot away, eyes narrowed. “My, your as ignorant as the other humans who wander into my forest. Now, come… I wish for you to leave,”

Following after the feline in either wonder or fear of what the large creature might do, Robert found himself on a long dirt pathway through the forest. The forest becoming a bit less interesting as he began to study the feline more.

The black she-cat's long hair swayed with each step, her movements somehow making her look elegant and regal; as if she were the queen of all the cats. Her head only moving just the slightest to check that he was in fact still following behind her.

Minutes ticked by, each one seeming like another hour. However he wasn't sure if the feeling was real or if his mind was playing a trick on him and it really had only been mere moments. Though as more time passed it seemed that the former had been correct as the sky quickly seemed to turn from bright blue to orange and red, then finally a dark purplish blue.

“Time is not the same as yours human,” The feline remarked, her head turned for a moment. Eyes narrowing as she saw the brown-haired boy was about to say something. “You may have been in my forest for three days, but this is the first time you've managed to step into the other reality were my domain exists.”

The teen seemed intrigued by the felines words. A small smile crawling it's way onto his face. For some reason he wanted to know more; of how he managed to get to this ‘other reality’ and what it even was? The forest looked the same, so why was it here? Why did that cat want him gone so badly?

Not long after her last comment the creature hoped onto a large tree stump betwixt the two paths that split from the main path. One was well travelled with multiple sets of old footprints, likely the main path that he had used to enter the forest. A bright sunny day and a grassy field present farther in the distance. The other was dark, almost no light but the stars and a few fireflies. The silhouette and blazing eyes of multiple other animals.

“Though I wish to not ask you this, I fear that is against my word and must do so.” The feline let out a puff of air from her nose, almost like a human would breath out a sigh. Her eyes seeming to glow unnaturally bright as her tail swished to and fro once more. “You may either return home and forget that you ever stumbled across my home, or…” She trailed off for a moment, “you may become a permanent resident and be granted some of my power, however know that there are things in this reality that I do not control. Things which will no doubt attempt to kill you,”

Robert took a moment, his eyes travelling from one path of the crossroads to the other. One path would take him out of the forest, back to the boring normalcy of his family farm which he travelled to avoid. Or he could stay here in the strange little reality that he had found himself. A place that seemed so fantastical with creatures that were probably like the large she-cat. Now that would be an adventure.

Grinning at the feline he finally made his division. “If you don't mind, I'd like to stay here,”

The cat tilted her head at the males request. “Did I hear you correctly, human?”

“My sister always told me the road less travelled was the one that would change your life.” The boy frowned as he looked down at his shoes. The action actually reminded her greatly of another human who had ventured into the forest. A girl who looked very similar to the boy, now that she thought about it. “She left a few years back, we never heard anything from her again. I guess I started travelling because of her.”

“And oddly enough you were presented the same choice as your sister. How strange fate is,” The feline mused, her eyes becoming soft as she jumped off the tree stump. “Come Robert Frost, a new journey stands before you, and maybe you just might see that sister of yours yet. Never lose hope.”

“My sister is here,” The boy questioned as he once again followed after the feline.

The feline let another puff of air out of her nose. “Not quiet, but she is within this realm, just not my kingdom. Now come, our journey begins,”

It was then that the boy realized his sisters words were true. Had he not decided to leave the realm of humans behind he'd never be here; he'd probably never have been on his way to finding her.
