Alec's POV
Do you understand how hard it was to go to school for me? No, you don't. The very first day of kindergarten, every kid in the class shared their tattoo to each other, proud of their lifespans, but I never showed mine. Why, you may ask. Well that's why many never understood me. I was the freak that supposedly didn't have a tattoo. That was because I never let it show. I kept long sleeves on all the time. Only my closest friends knew what my tattoo was.
When I was born, everyone in the room was surprised at the small tattoo that I had been granted by the gods. We were Vampires, and usually we had tattoos that told us we would live quite a while, but I was a freak of nature. Many of us lived lived up to 6,000 years old. But me, I was only supposed to live 20.
My parents didn't like that, so what did they do? They got rid of me. Sent me to a human orphanage, where even the kids there had longer lifespans than I did. That was the reason time after time, I was skipped over by potential adopters. It was all because no one wanted to be attached to me, because once they got attached, I would die. They wanted someone like Emily that had a lifespan of 600 years, her tattoo being a elephant, even though it wasn't really a girls tattoo. It wasn't attractive at all, it was kind of ugly.
Very few had less time that me, and Kinzie was one of them. She was only supposed to live 16 years, and another was Grant. He was supposed to live 19. We were the closest in the orphanage and when we started kindergarten we stuck together like glue. We never showed our tattoos, afraid of the people around us. We knew they would make fun of us.
I knew that Grant had a tattoo of a Panther Chameleon that was red and white, and Kinzie had a Monarch Butterfly. They were the only ones that knew my tattoo. I was proud of my tattoo, I just didn't like people seeing it. My tattoo meant I was confident and a little sassy, and supposedly everyone was supposed to love me, but I guess my parents proved that wrong. Then there was that fateful day when one of us died, they had the funeral but no one had been invited.
Me and Grant were now 18 and Kinzie was sadly the one that died. We were still in the orphanage, still being skipped over because our life spans. We were going to the high school close to the orphanage.
"Hey, freak! Come here." Great. Emily, yeah the one that was supposed to live 600 years. When she was adopted, her family never moved out of the county so we were stuck with her being one of the most popular people.
"How about.... no." I just kept walking keeping my hood over my face. Next thing I knew I was being pushed up against the lockers.
"You never tell me no. Now, go get me a coffee from the cafeteria, you know how I like it." She smirked. I was tired of her, so I was finally going to stand my ground.
"I said, No." It was my turn to take my stand.
"Alright Freak, you'll regret that. You may just die before your supposed to." She punched me, hard, and my head banged against the locker and I had to bite my lip at the pain.
"What was that for?" I practically screeched.
"Oh I don't know, just cause I wanted to. What are ya going to do about it? Bite me?" She smiled as she smacked on her gum. I pulled my hood down and smiled, letting my fangs come out in full view. She was frightened and she definitely let that show.
"I don't know, it's tempting." I kept my sinister smile on and she scurried off. I just sighed, just a few more weeks, that was till school ended and when I lost my other best friend. Grant was supposed to die in 3 weeks, the day he turned 19.
"Hey Alec." Speak of the devil. I turned around to find Grant walking to me.
"What happened to you?" His voice took on a surprised tone and he also had a hint of protectiveness.
"Emily wanted me to get her coffee and I refused so she punched me." He looked concerned and told me that I was going to the nurse no matter what, so I had agreed. He took me and the nurse said I needed to go back to the orphanage for the day, it would leave a bruise. She also said that Emily would be taken to the principal to be talked to. Grant swore he was staying with me so he took me home and took care of me.
2 Weeks later
A week. That was all Grant had left. We had finished school early to spend time together and that's all we did. 24/7 we never left each other. We even slept together, and not in that way. I had been attached to Grant and vise versa. He always said that he would have dated me if we would have lived longer.
It was the day, the day that Grant was supposed to die. We stayed together, even though Grant believed that it would kill me to stay with him when he died. And it did.
"I hope you live longer than expected. I love you Alec. I always will." That was the last thing he said to me. I broke down in tears as my best friend turned to ashes before me. We were on top a mountain and all it took was a breeze of wind to carry him away. I watched as his ashes flew into the sky, carried by the wind. He had loved me. He always would. I took one last glance before making my way down the mountain.
Ever since that day, I've been broken.
Almost a year later
I had never started college. I wasn't supposed to live that long anyway. I walked down the halls of the orphanage. I only had a few hours left, but I didn't care, I didn't have anyone left. I no longer had a reason to live. After Emily had finally left me alone, I started staying away from everyone I could.
I felt light, like I was flying. I wasn't dead. It had been a whole night and I haven't died. The orphanage mother told me I needed to go see a doctor, and I honestly agreed. We had an appointment set for later today.
"Hey. Umm Alec, can I talk to you?" It was Emily. I turned to face her and she didn't have the shit-eating-grin she normally had on. I nodded and followed her to a corner.
"You know the reason I made fun of you?" She looked up, but didn't wait for my answer. "You are so beautiful and I can't compare with that beauty. I heard you were supposed to die yesterday, but your still here. Will you show me your tattoo? I swear I won't tell anyone." For the first time, she looked shy. I nodded and took my jacket off. She gasp and started touching my arm in amazement.
"Alec, this is beautiful, why did you hide it? It's so much prettier than mine." She looked up confused. I just shrugged.
"I didn't think anyone liked me, so why should they care what my tattoo was?" I said, unaffected by her amazement.
"Come on, we have to show everyone we can before you die." She started running off and I had no other choice but to follow.
By the time my doctors appointment came around the whole town knew what my tattoo was. A neon blue dragonfly. With the date underneath it, everyone was amazed I was still alive.
Emily ended up going to the doctor with me. We waited for hours until we were seen and the doctor inspected every inch of my body.
"Well, I know why your alive, watch this." He took a cotton ball full of this goopy stuff and spread it across my arm. I was amazed.
The number completely disappeared and in its place was a word. Immortal.
"How did that happen?" I ask the doctor.
"Your friend, Grant. He gave you more life, somehow. Really everyone was right when you were called a freak." I looked down ashamed. "But it's in a good way." I looked back up surprised.
"What?" All 3 of us ask. Me, Emily, and the orphanage mother.
"You have a gift. And your parents didn't know about it. You give the gift of life, anyone who loved you, became immortal. Grant is somewhere in this world, still alive, you just have to find him. He was the one who said I love you first. You know the dragonfly tattoo comes once every 6 million years, your lucky you have it. Every case ends up like yours. The shy girl thinking she only had 20 years to live, then low and behold the few who loved her first become immortal. Go on, take a road trip. Find your friend."
And that's exactly what I did. Me and Emily became best friends on that trip and we actually found Grant. He was living in New York with a family member. When he saw me, he had already heard why he was still alive and he practically tackled me to the ground.
You know years after that, I was happy. Grant fixed me back and we ended up getting married. Emily was married to a woman named Kiley and me and Emily were still friends till the day she died. This was a hard day, but a happy one as I remembered she was the first ever to change on my behalf. She became Kinzie in a way. We all watched as her ashes floated away. I looked down at my little boy, Grant Jr. You know what his tattoo was? Well, he didn't have one.. he was immortal.
