Ramona Gibbler had no intention of moving anywhere outside of Sherman Oaks, California. When her mother told her that they were relocating to San Francisco, she had a lot of strong feelings. Why did they have to move to her mother's best friend's house? Life was perfect for them even though her father was a race car driver who had divorced her mother, and her mother is a "little" crazy.

Eighth grade had started a few weeks ago, and she and her friends were already planning their high school years. Eleanor, Fabiola, Devi, and Ramona have known each other since they were in diapers. She couldn't survive a day without them, but now she had to be five hours away from the squad.

"Mom, I can go stay at Fabiola's place when you are at DJ's house. You and Mrs. Torres are close friends, and nothing can go wrong," reassured the dark-haired teen. They were having breakfast, and Ramona was eating bacon and eggs while her mother was wearing her bacon and eggs scarf.

"Oh, Ramona! Why do you want to stay at her house? You are going to have so much fun with the Fullers!"

"Well, Devi has a lot on her plate; her cousin, Kamala, is staying at their place, she has harp and swimming classes, and her mother is quite stern. Even though I am the closest to El, she is dealing with her step-mother and her father. Fabiola is the only one with no issues, and I am not interested in leaving," she replied as she kept her dishes in the sink.

"I can't do anything, sweetie; I called the moving van," Kimmy paused for dramatic effect, "But, we are going have so much fun with them!" She held her daughter's hands, and they spun around in circles. Ramona was not pleased.

"Mom, I have to go! Today's the last day I will see them," she screamed and pulled away. Kimmy tried to hide her hurt when Ramona left without another word.

She walked towards the garage and sat on her bicycle. Putting her school bag in the basket in front of her, she sipped some water and started peddling. Her mother was selfish and insane. How could she uproot them for her desires? Didn't she go to DJ's house last week? Why did she want to stay with them? Wasn't this place good enough?

Ramona didn't notice when she reached Appleberry Middle School, a beautiful building. The trees were shades of green, the flowers had all the colors of the rainbow, and the sun shined brightly. The general public would mistake this public school for a palace because of its elaborate infrastructure. The walls were pale shades of brown with magnificent patterns, and the school flag was hoisted on the pole, swaying to the cool breeze.

She locked her bike in the school's rack and began looking for her squad. The campus was, gradually, crowding with talkative teenagers. She glanced around, but she couldn't find anyone. Didn't they care that it was her last day? She shook her head, trying to deny that thought. El, Devi, and Fab would not ghost on this significant day.

Right?

The morning bell had rung, informing the students to head to their homerooms. Ramona sighed and walked to her class. She had a lot of thoughts about her friends. Were they sick? Were they ignoring her? What is wrong with them? Why is the universe treating her this way? She walked into dance class with a gloomy expression.

During warm-ups, her teacher, Mr. JY Park, asked her if she was okay. He knew that Ramona was a glowing ball of sunshine, and to see her like this disheartened him. She was one of the top dancers in the state and had the opportunity to perform at the national level. This fact, undoubtedly, made Ramona Gibbler his favorite student, at least during the first period.

"You know today's my last day, right?"

"Yep. My star student had to leave one day or another." That remark earned Mr. Park a glare from Isla, Ramona's enemy. She ridiculed Eleanor, broke Fabiola's robot, and sabotaged Devi during her concert. Anyone who harms the squad would have to sleep with one eye open.

"The squad isn't here," she fidgeted with her fingers, and her forehead started getting sweaty, "Do they care about me?"

"Of course they do! I've heard the school bus broke down on the way here, do they happen to go on it?"

Yes! Thank you, sir," she exclaimed as she hugged her teacher. The class (officially) began, and Ramona smiled for the first time on that day. She had fun when she delivered clean, sharp moves during an upbeat song or graceful movements during a slow song.

The class got over quickly, and Ramona walked towards her locker. They were as black as ink, and every single one had a picture of its owner. The floors had colored transparent tiles with little patterns on them. The people who thought that this school was a palace were right.

"Ramona!"

"Gibbler!"

"America's next dancer!"

She'd know those nicknames anywhere. She glanced behind and saw Eleanor, Fabiola, Devi, each girl having a huge grin on their face. The four of them hugged tightly, knowing that this would be one of their last times.

"Please don't think that we ditched school. The—"

"Bus broke down. I know," Ramona said with a smile. The other girls had relieved expressions and looked more at ease.

"I wanna make it up to," declared Devi. The Gibbler was shocked; the girls didn't have to do anything for her. Their friendship was the most precious of all.

"You always wanted to go to this juice bar nearby," said Eleanor.

"How about we go after school," chimed Fabiola.

Ramona was ecstatic. That place was the most famous and expensive juice bar in around 50 miles. They must have enough money, which is why they offered to take her there. Does San Francisco have any good juice bars? She'd heard that they ruined pizza after Chicago.

"Yes, but I need to be home at 5 o'clock. That's when I have to relocate," she whispered. The girls gave Ramona another hug and sympathetically looked at her.

"I'm sure we'll be back by then, but we all need to go to class," said Devi as she playfully pushed her friends down the corridor. The bell rang once again, and everyone rushed to their respective rooms.

Classes were boring for most students, but Ramona treasured every moment. She might never hear Mrs. Smith babble about her love life or Mr. Liam lecture the class about mathematics ever again. The school day unfolded like a regular for many, but not for the squad.

During lunchtime, Ramona received a peace-treaty text from Isla.

Isla, of all people!

She felt a lot of contradictory emotions. She was happy that she didn't have an enemy anymore but cautious about accepting her "offer." What, unquestionably, surprised her was her appearance at her lunch table. She walked up to Ramona and offered her a handshake with a sincere smile. The latter hesitantly reciprocated the action, and Isla left without another word.

"Do I need glasses now," Eleanor walked towards Ramona, sporting her famous one feathered earring, "Or did you forgive that brat?"

"El, I don't want to regret this either, but this offer was too good to refuse," Ramona countered.

"What did the heck she text you," asked Fabiola looking away from her phone. She lightly jabbed Devi to get her attention.

"She said, and I quote, 'Dear Gibbler, I know we hated each other ever since we saw each other. You're leaving this city for whatever reason, and I wanted to say that I'm sorry. You don't deserve all hate I gave you. This message may seem fake to you, but I meant every word.'," muttered Ramona.

"Let's forget about her and plan our smoothie party," exclaimed Devi.

It was needless to say that it was a success. After school, they rushed home to keep their school stuff and ran to the juice bar. The girls got their preferred flavors, and they talked like they were running out of time.

"Guys, I have to go," said Ramona as she glanced at the sky and her cell phone. The other three girls began tearing up. They didn't expect their friendship to end this way.

"Don't forget us," muttered Devi.

"We love you," said Fabiola.

"Follow your dreams!"

The four of them hugged for the last time. Time seemed to stop, and the tears finally began coming. Ramona ran back home as she heard words of encouragement from her friends.

"Honey, it's time to go," said Kimmy when her daughter reached home. Everything was packed and ready to go.

Except for Ramona.

"Oh sweetie," Kimmy hugged her tightly, "It's okay. We'll be fine."

"Why do we have to go," she cried.

"Deej has a baby named Tommy, and she needs help raising him. Stephanie doesn't know a thing about parenting. These ladies are my squad, just like you, Fab, El, and Devi. Nothing can tear us apart."

For the first time, Ramona wasn't upset about the move. This relocation would be a new opportunity for the Gibblers. She finally understood her mother's intentions and agreed with them. She sat in the car as she looked at the purple-pink sky.

Sherman Oaks was an astounding place, but now it's time to move to San Francisco.

She had never been so happy about a move to a house full of people.
