Abigail reached out her hand to me, and I gratefully took it. She swam up a bit, and I cautiously lifted my fin from the ground. She smiled at me, and let go of my head to reach under my arms and pull me up to face her. I still had no clue what I was doing, and let myself sag in her arms. She wrapped her fin around mine, and began moving it slowly to the front and back, showing me what to do. She released my tail and I carried on the gentle swaying, which kept me in one place. She let go of me entirely, and swam backwards a little to watch me. I found that if a swam faster I went upward, and stoping the motion made me fall very slowly. She laughed at my experimentation an began slowly swimming away, I followed behind her trying to keep reminding myself to swim with one leg, instead of the kicking motion, which obviously wouldn't work.
She finally stopped behind a large rock, and motioned me over. We leaned around the edge and she pointed to a large ship above the water. From the dark shadow came a stream of litter and debris sinking to the bottom. Small fish got caught in the debris and sank to the ocean floor.
Abigail swam toward them, and I followed closely. She brushed a candy wrapper off of a confused crab and pulled a grocery bag away from a fish who was attempting to eat it. While she helped the animals, I swam up closer to the looming darkness above. When I got close, I could hear the sound of drunken laughter from above. I scoffed and grabbed the beer bottle they threw off. I poked my head out of the water, and looked up at the boat. It seemed to be a sail boat full of unruly drunken fishermen. I tossed the bottle over the side, and from the cry of pain I must have hit someone. They immediately trampled over to my side, causing the boat to sway. Gaining the opening I was waiting for, I reached up and took the end before swimming down and under. In one swift motion, I had capsized the boat. It began going down, so I tore a few planks off for good measure. The gasping sailors clung to the few stray boards, and immediately began blaming each other for the sunken ship.
I swam down and immediately realized my mistake, the creature all fled from the boat, hoping not to get caught under its mass. Abigail swam to me and simply shook her head and held out her hand. I grabbed it, and she swam towards shore.
When we reached the beach she began pulling herself up onto one of the few rock in the shallow water. Seeing no way to remove myself from the water with a tail without looking like an idiot, I unceremoniously dragged myself out.
She sat on the rock sunning her fin, so I did the same. I must admit, it felt really nice. After a few minutes of awkward silence, my fin split into two normal legs, and her's did the same. I finally gained back the ability to speak, but before I could say anything she spoke, "Why'd you dump the ship in?" I turned away in shame, "I didn't really think about it, I just wanted to get back at them for hurting the animals." She sighed before letting out a small laugh.
"You may not be cut out for this one."
"Yeah..."
"Come on, I'll take you home."
Abigail climbed of the rock and grabbed her keys from her pocket. I jumped of, and noticed I was now fully clothed too. We walked back to her car in silence, and it was really pretty with the sunset.
About halfway there, she finally broke the silence, "Don't feel bad about it Ichigo," she smiled, "This just wasn't your thing. Don't worry about it." I nodded. I highly doubt I'll find "my thing" though, all I really want is normality.
When she dropped me off, she disappeared. I mean literally disappeared, the car, everything. I turned around and walked into my house. My little sister immediately pulled me aside, "something weird happen?"
"Yeah."
She waited for a few seconds, "well?"
"Mermaid. Look, I'm tired, I'm going up to sleep." She just stared at me, before walking off, probably to talk with friends or something.
I got to my room, and had just gotten comfortable when I heard a knock at my door. "Come in!" I called, not bothering to look. I heard little footsteps come up to my bed and looked over to see my sister holding her hands behind her back. "Look, if weird stuff is going to happen to you, you should keep track of it." She said before you bringing a leather bound notebook from behind her. She put it down next to me and rushed out leaving me in stunned silence.
