Midnight conversations
Raavi tossed and turned in her sleep, unable to sleep. She remembered Suman Kaki's taunts and harsh words every time she closed her eyes. Since childhood people taunted her for being an orphan but she had made herself strong enough to not get affected by their words. But she was offended when her own mother-in-law referred to her as Ganda Khoon, Panauti, and Manhoos. Hurt because the woman she'd started calling Maa saw her as a bad omen. She turned to see her husband who was sleeping, occasionally snoring. He looked so cute and adorable while sleeping. Her hand reached out as she caressed his face, going through his features.
Shiva woke up when felt something brush against his cheek. He thought he was dreaming at first, but it was just his chudail biwi caressing his face. He decided to keep sleeping to see what his Chipkali had in mind. Suddenly, he felt her hand retract and shuffle on the bed as she turned to the other side. He was about to fall asleep again when he heard a sniffle, though it was very soft. He opened his eyes and looked to her side, only to find her shaking from all the crying, as she tried not to wake him up.
He sighed, knowing the reason behind her tears. His mother had a very sharp tongue, which she had used to say some very offensive things to his wife. Though he consoled his wife by saying his mother didn't mean any of it, he knew it was wrong. He was let down by his mother. He was disappointed in himself for not standing up for his wife, for not being able to stop his mother from calling her names like Markundi Gaay, insulting her blood, calling her a bad omen.
But this has to come to an end, he thought.
He reached out to Raavi, who was still sniffling, her back turned to him, and hugged her. Raavi stiffened briefly before recognizing his touch and leaning back so he could hold her.
"Aye Chipkali, Somnath mein baadh laana chahti hai kya apne aansuon se," he said softly as he ran his hands over her arms to calm her down.
"Sorry, mere rone ki wajah se tu jaag gaya."
"Tere paas Sorry ka extra maal pada hai kya jo tu har kisi ko sorry bolti rehti hai, chaahe teri galti ho ya na ho. Biwi hai tu meri, tera pura haq hai mere saamne rone ka, apni shikayate bolne ka. Samjhi tu," Shiva said in his usual rowdy tone.
Raavi said nothing in response, instead turned and tightly hugged him as Shiva held her close, allowing her to speak only when she was ready. Shiva kissed her forehead as she gradually stopped crying.
"Shiva," Raavi softly said. "Kya tujhe bhi lagta hai ki main ek Panauti..." She couldn't finish the sentence, but Shiva understood what she meant.
"Ae Raavi, jabse tu meri zindagi mein aayi hai mujhe musuraane ki wajah mili hai, khush hone ki wajah mili hai. Jab roz subah tera chehra dekhke dukaan jaata hu toh mujhe pata hota hai ki mera din A1 jaayega. Aur jab dukaan se thak kar ghar aata hu aur tera khilkhilata chehra dekhta hoon toh saari thakkan door ho jaati hai. Tu toh mere jigar ka tukda hai, mera pyaar hai , iss Bandar ki Chipkali , iss Shiva ki Gauri hai. Meri jaan hai tu. Mere liye tu sab kuch hai, toh yeh Panauti wali baat ko apne dimaag se phek de. Samjhi"
"Tu bhi mera sab kuch hai Shiva. I love you."
"I love you too meri Jaan. Aur mein kal Maa se baat kar lunga. Ab tu aaram se soja."
He looked at Raavi, only to find her snoring in his arms. Shiva would certainly have a talk with his mother tomorrow.
Shiva Pandya would not allow anyone to disrespect Raavi's dignity, even if it was his mother.
