Prussia x Hungary
Wow. I promised myself I wouldn't get too involved in Hetalia, but just look who's a big ol' hypocrite. Not gonna lie, this ship in particular is making me fanboy something fierce. I'll try to stay composed. Let's get started.
Although admittedly Prussia and Hungary have little interaction in history, the Teutonic Order, originator of the state of Prussia, once served the Kingdom of Hungary by killing pagan Cumans, as you do. Hetalia translates this bit of history as child!Prussia and child/tomboy!Hungary playing war together. The image alone is adorable, but the first signs of shipping here was with Prussia going into shock after finding out Hungary is not, in fact, male. Cue Prussia praying to God for forgiveness for touching Hungary's chest. Later on, Prussia finds a beaten up Hungary in the woods, where he proceeds to joke around with her using his "crotch cloth", only to catch sight of her "assets", stutter uncontrollably, hand her his entire jacket, and march off flustered. This event triggered Hungary's decision to become feminine. Finally, Prussia stumbles upon Hungary in the Austrian Empire. He is surprised to find her dressed femininely and asks her to go hunting with him. She refuses, though reluctantly.
Amongst the fandom, it is the most widely supported hetero ship in Hetalia. It's support can also be compounded by the threesome between Prussia, Hungary, and Austria, known as Frying Pangle, but I digress. It's possible much of the popularity of PruHun is derived from Prussia's popularity. He is a fun, arrogant character who is a bit of a prankster. At the same time, fans looking for hidden depths will find him as the most depressing and tragic character amongst the lot. It doesn't hurt that Hungary also smacks him with a frying pan every now and again.
So what are my thoughts?
(Banshee screech)
I bloody love it. Given how Hungary likes Austria, the ship has a solid flavor of tragedy and despair. As a starting base, the pair could be viewed as childhood friends, a classic if there ever was one. Add a topping of tsundere on possibly both sides and we have a fine recipe for shipping. It isn't often a ship gets my full attention, but this one nailed it. I've reached the point where fanfiction and fanart isn't enough anymore, so I've begun headcanons such as Lichtenstein being the defacto child of the two just to satisfy my enjoyment.
Due to the tragedy portion of the ship (Prussia having an unrequited love while Hungary chases after Austria), I personally don't think shipping wars are liable to form around this one. Of course, I'm not stupid, a shipping war probably already began long before now, but still. I'm actually excited to hear what everyone else thinks.
If you care to comment, do so. Or not. This isn't by order of the King... yet.
